The best single burner depends on where you plan to cook: a lightweight backpacking stove packs small, while a tabletop model offers a larger cooking surface and a steadier base. Before choosing, check the exact stove’s fuel compatibility, cookware limits, intended setting and safety instructions. The specifications below help compare formats and models; they do not establish an independently tested overall winner.
Choose a format for the way you cook
Single-burner camping stoves generally fall into two formats. Backpacking models prioritize low weight and packability, often with smaller pan supports. Tabletop models are intended to sit on a level surface and can accommodate larger cookware, but they are less compact to carry. Neither format is universally better: match the burner to the setting and cookware you actually intend to use.
- For backpacking: prioritize packed weight, a stable setup on suitable ground, and a pan sized for the supports.
- For outdoor tabletop cooking: check the permitted pan diameter, fuel arrangement, safety features and manual instructions.
Compare three single-burner options
These manufacturer specifications describe different designs, not a head-to-head performance test. BTU ratings alone do not show which stove will cook faster or use fuel more efficiently.
| Model | Published specifications | Potential fit | Check before use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coleman Single Burner Backpacking Butane/Propane Stove, model 3001 | 6.7 ounces without fuel; up to 10,000 BTU; designed for a 6-inch pan; Coleman specifies a C250 220-g cartridge. | Weight-conscious backpacking and compact cooking. | Use only the specified cartridge, confirm current instructions and availability, and keep cookware within the designed footprint. |
| CHARD Single Burner Butane Camp Stove, SBBCS85 | 8,500 BTU; accommodates one 10-inch pan; piezo starter and safety shut-off; outdoor use only. | Outdoor tabletop cooking when a larger pan is useful. | Confirm the required butane format and follow the manual; do not use indoors. |
| Flame King Portable Butane & Propane Gas Stove, YSNVT-505-B | 8,000 BTU; listed for an 8-ounce butane cartridge or a 16.4-ounce propane cylinder; accepts pans up to 10 inches. | A tabletop format with two listed fuel options. | Choose only the fuel configuration permitted by the model instructions. The product page showed the stove out of stock when accessed on October 8, 2026; check its current status before buying. |
Check fuel compatibility before buying
Fuel connections are model-specific. A stove described as butane/propane compatible does not necessarily accept every canister or cylinder of either fuel. Read the exact model’s manual and product information before connecting fuel.

A common question is, “Will this work with the bigger coleman propane bottles?” For Coleman’s cited Single Burner Backpacking Butane/Propane Stove, model 3001, the manufacturer’s product Q&A specifies only the Coleman C250 220-g cartridge. Do not assume that a larger Coleman propane bottle is compatible; confirm the allowed fuel for the exact model in its manual.
Match the pan to the burner
Cookware diameter is a practical constraint, not just a convenience. Coleman lists its backpacking stove for a 6-inch pan, while CHARD lists its tabletop stove for one 10-inch pan. Flame King lists pans up to 10 inches for its cited tabletop model. Stay within the maker’s cookware guidance and make sure the pan sits securely on the supports.

Oversized cookware can also create a safety hazard on some tabletop butane stoves. In a May 2003 staff report, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) described historical engineering investigations and tests in which pans or griddles extending over a stove’s fuel compartment could restrict airflow and heat the canister. The report also documented incidents involving a grate and drip pan used upside down. This is historical evidence, not a substitute for the current instructions supplied with your stove. Use the appliance only as directed and do not improvise with cookware or parts.
