LG’s U.S. instructions explain where to put powder, liquid, and tablet cleaners and recommend running the Tub Clean cycle when your model has one. LG does not name a single best brand or publish comparative test results, so no cleaner can be called an LG-endorsed or proven winner on that basis.
What cleaner should you use in an LG washer?
Use a washing-machine tub cleaner that is permitted by your model’s manual. Cleaner format matters: LG’s U.S. instructions place powder and liquid cleaners in specific detergent-drawer compartments, while tablets go directly into the empty washer drum. Check the package for its dosage and cycle directions, and use them together with the washer manual.
One compatible example is Affresh Washing Machine Cleaner Tablets. Affresh says its tablets are safe for all washer makes and models, including HE, front-load, and top-load machines, and directs users to put a tablet in an empty washer rather than the dispenser. That is the manufacturer’s compatibility claim, not independent performance testing or an LG endorsement.
LG’s U.S. guidance recommends a tub cleaner generically; it does not identify a best brand or compare cleaning performance. A separate regional LG top-load guide names Home Star Perfect Tub Cleaner, but that guidance should not be treated as a recommendation for every LG model or region. Check that guide only if it applies to your washer.

How to use tub cleaner in an LG washing machine
- Empty the washer. Remove laundry and visible objects from the drum.
- Check both sets of instructions. Confirm the cleaner format, amount, and cycle are suitable for your model.
- Place the cleaner according to its format. LG’s U.S. instructions say to put powder in the main-wash compartment, removing the liquid-cup insert if applicable; put liquid in the main-wash cup insert; and put a tablet directly in the drum. Do not put a tablet in the dispenser drawer.
- Run the Tub Clean cycle. Close the dispenser and door, select Tub Clean, and start the cycle. If your washer does not have Tub Clean, consult its model-specific manual rather than assuming another cycle is equivalent.
- Air out the washer. When the cycle ends, open the door and dispenser so the interior can dry. Wipe moisture from the door and seal, and leave the door slightly ajar if practical.

How often should you clean the tub?
LG’s U.S. support article recommends cleaning the tub monthly. If your washer already has a musty smell, LG advises running Tub Clean once a week for three consecutive weeks. If the odor remains after that, LG recommends requesting repair support.

What about bleach and other washer maintenance?
Do not assume undiluted bleach is a suitable tub cleaner. LG’s regional top-load guide cautions against using undiluted bleach for tub cleaning and provides model-specific alternatives. Follow your own washer’s manual and the cleaner’s directions rather than transferring instructions from another model.
LG also recommends regular attention to related areas such as the drain pump filter, detergent dispenser, inlet filters, and door gaskets. Procedures vary by model; front-load drain-pump filter access may involve opening a service panel. Use the manual’s safety directions and procedure for your exact washer instead of improvising.
