The best space heater to use with a generator is generally a 120-volt, 1,500-watt ceramic electric heater with a thermostat and documented safety controls. It can work with a sufficiently large generator, but a 1,500-watt heater may consume most of a small generator’s continuous capacity. Size the generator by its running or rated wattage, then subtract the demands of refrigerators, pumps, lights, chargers, and every other connected appliance.

The generator itself is the critical safety concern: a gasoline- or propane-powered generator must run outdoors, at least 20 feet from the home, with its exhaust directed away from doors, windows, vents, and other openings. Never operate it in a garage, basement, shed, porch, carport, or other enclosed or partially enclosed location.

Best overall heater: a 1,500-watt ceramic space heater

A 1,500-watt ceramic heater is a practical choice because it uses a standard 120-volt outlet and commonly includes a thermostat, multiple heat settings, overheat protection, and a compact housing. Ceramic construction does not make a heater produce more heat per watt than other electric resistance heaters, but it is widely available in portable indoor models with useful controls.

One representative model, the Lasko CT16451, is rated at 1,500 watts on high and 900 watts on low, with a 120-volt supply, adjustable thermostat, overheat protection, cool-touch housing, ETL listing, and indoor-use designation. Its lower setting can reduce the electrical load when full output is unnecessary.

For outage heating, look for these features:

  • Adjustable thermostat that can cycle the heater instead of running continuously.
  • At least one lower-wattage heat setting.
  • Overheat protection.
  • Tip-over shutoff where documented by the manufacturer.
  • A stable, level base and cool-touch areas where available.
  • Certification from a recognized testing organization, such as an ETL listing, when stated on the product documentation.

Use the manufacturer’s room-size guidance cautiously. A heater may warm a person or small room effectively while being inadequate for a large, drafty, or poorly insulated space.

Can a 1,500-watt heater run on a 2,000-watt generator?

Usually, but only if the generator’s continuous output is at least 1,500 watts and no other connected loads push it beyond its limit. A 1,500-watt heater draws about 12.5 amps at 120 volts on high. A generator advertised as “2,000 watts” may have less practical capacity once other appliances, operating conditions, and the manufacturer’s limits are considered.

The heater could leave roughly 500 watts on paper, but that remaining margin may not be enough for a refrigerator starting its compressor, a sump pump, a furnace blower, or another motor-driven appliance. Do not use the generator’s surge or peak figure as its sustained capacity.

How to size the generator for a space heater

  1. Read the heater’s nameplate. Use its highest continuous wattage. For a typical model, that is 1,500 watts on high or 900 watts on low.
  2. List every other load. Include refrigerators, freezers, pumps, lights, chargers, televisions, routers, tools, and battery chargers.
  3. Separate running watts from starting watts. Motors often need an extra surge when they start. The generator must handle both the continuous total and temporary starting demand.
  4. Use the generator’s rated or continuous output. Ignore a larger peak number when deciding whether it can sustain the heater.
  5. Keep a safety margin. Avoid operating continuously at the generator’s absolute limit, and follow its manual for altitude, temperature, fuel, grounding, outlets, and extension cords.

A 1,000-watt generator is not suitable for a 1,500-watt heater. A 2,000-watt unit may run one heater by itself, but a larger-capacity generator is more practical when essential appliances must operate at the same time.

Representative generator pairing: Honda EU2200i

The Honda EU2200i is listed as a 2,200-watt, 120-volt inverter generator and includes CO-MINDER carbon-monoxide monitoring. That output makes it a more plausible one-heater pairing than a 1,000-watt generator, but it does not create unlimited capacity. Subtract the running and starting requirements of every other appliance, and follow Honda’s operating instructions.

CO monitoring is an additional protective feature, not permission to operate the generator indoors or closer to the home. Automatic shutdown cannot eliminate the danger of exhaust entering a building.

Best indoor-source alternative: a high-output portable power station

A battery power station can operate a 1,500-watt heater indoors without producing combustion exhaust at the point of use. It must still have enough continuous AC output, and its battery will discharge quickly under electric-resistance heating.

Examples of specifications that can support this type of load include:

Power station Listed battery capacity Listed AC output What it means for a heater
Jackery Explorer 2000 Plus 2,042.8 Wh 3,000 W; 6,000 W surge peak Enough inverter output for a 1,500-watt heater, subject to other loads and operating limits.
EcoFlow DELTA 2 Max 2,048 Wh 2,400 W total AC; 4,800 W surge Enough listed AC output for one 1,500-watt heater, subject to other loads and mode limitations.

Battery capacity is measured in watt-hours, while heater demand is measured in watts. In a simplified ideal calculation, a 2,048-Wh battery running a 1,500-watt heater continuously would provide about 1.37 hours. Actual runtime will be shorter because of inverter losses, reserve limits, battery temperature, heater cycling, and other connected devices. If the thermostat cycles the heater or the 900-watt setting is used, runtime can be longer, but it cannot be promised without the specific operating conditions.

Is a ceramic heater more efficient for generator use?

Not automatically. A ceramic heater and other electric resistance heaters convert electrical energy into heat at broadly comparable rates. The important variables for generator use are the heater’s selected wattage, thermostat cycling, room conditions, and how much heat is actually required.

A heater with a 900-watt low setting and an effective thermostat may use less energy over time than a basic heater that runs continuously at 1,500 watts. Choose based on controllability and safety features rather than assuming the ceramic label alone reduces fuel or battery consumption.

Safety rules for using a heater during an outage

Keep a combustion generator outdoors

Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and poisonous. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says never to operate a portable generator in or near a garage, house, basement, crawlspace, shed, or other enclosed space, even if doors or windows are open.

Place the generator at least 20 feet from the home, with the exhaust pointed away from the building and away from doors, windows, vents, and other openings. An open garage door, open window, porch, carport, or similar workaround does not make operation safe.

Connect the heater correctly

  • Plug an electric heater into a proper wall outlet whenever possible.
  • Never use a power strip for the heater.
  • Do not run the heater’s cord under rugs or carpeting.
  • Use only an extension cord if both manuals permit it and the cord is appropriately rated, grounded, and intended for the load.
  • Do not exceed the generator’s outlet, circuit, or total-load rating.

Position the heater safely

  • Set it on a stable, level, noncombustible surface.
  • Keep combustible materials at least three feet away.
  • Keep it clear of curtains, bedding, paper, clothing, furniture, and construction debris.
  • Do not leave it running unattended or while sleeping.
  • Stop using it if the plug, cord, outlet, or housing becomes unusually hot or damaged.

Use carbon-monoxide alarms

Install carbon-monoxide alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. Battery backup and interconnected alarms are preferable. An alarm is a backup measure only; it never makes indoor generator use acceptable.

The CPSC reports that more than 200 people in the United States die each year from carbon monoxide produced by non-automotive consumer products. Its winter safety guidance reported 92 generator-associated carbon-monoxide deaths and 33 portable-heater-associated carbon-monoxide deaths in 2020. If a CO alarm sounds, leave immediately for fresh air and call emergency services from outside.

Which setup should you choose?

Your situation Most practical option Why
One small room and an outdoor generator already available 1,500-watt ceramic heater, preferably with a 900-watt setting Simple indoor heat source, provided the generator has adequate continuous capacity after other loads.
Generator must also run a refrigerator or pump Larger generator or reduced heater setting A 1,500-watt heater can consume nearly all of a small generator’s usable output.
Heating indoors without combustion equipment nearby High-output portable power station No combustion exhaust at the point of use, but runtime is limited by battery capacity and heater demand.
Overnight or unattended heating Do not rely on an unattended portable heater Portable heaters should not be left running while sleeping; use approved permanent heating and outage planning instead.

Bottom line on the best heater

For most generator-backed outage situations, choose a 1,500-watt, 120-volt ceramic space heater with a thermostat, a lower-wattage mode, overheat protection, and documented certification or safety features. Run it on low when practical. Pair it only with a generator whose continuous output covers the heater plus every other load, and operate the combustion generator outdoors at least 20 feet from the home.

If the power source must be indoors, use a suitably rated portable power station rather than bringing a fuel-burning generator inside. Expect a 1,500-watt heater to use substantial battery energy, so calculate runtime conservatively and prioritize one occupied room rather than attempting to heat an entire building.
