For many homes, the Aprilaire 600 is the large-capacity bypass benchmark, the Aprilaire 700 is the fan-powered evaporative alternative, and the Aprilaire 800 is the steam option for installations that can support additional electrical and plumbing requirements. The right choice depends on more than square footage. Your HVAC configuration, duct layout, home construction, airflow, water supply, drain access, control location, and available electrical service all matter.

These are whole-house HVAC accessories—not portable humidifiers. They normally require ductwork, water, drainage, controls, and professional installation. Steam models add electrical and steam-distribution requirements.

Aprilaire humidifier comparison

Model Technology Listed capacity Best suited to Key requirement
Aprilaire 600 Large bypass evaporative 17 gallons per day Homes with compatible forced-air HVAC systems seeking high evaporative capacity HVAC airflow, bypass ductwork, water, drain, and a replaceable Water Panel 35
Aprilaire 700 Fan-powered evaporative Depends on installation and operating conditions Installations where powered airflow is preferable to passive bypass airflow Power, HVAC integration, water, drain, and a replaceable Water Panel 35
Aprilaire 800 Steam 11.5–34.6 gallons per day, depending on electrical configuration Applications needing steam humidification or greater installation flexibility Appropriate electrical service, water, drain, steam distribution, and canister maintenance

Manufacturer capacity figures are planning specifications, not guarantees. Actual humidity depends on construction tightness, climate, ceiling height, furnace runtime, duct design, humidistat settings, and how well the home retains moisture.

What is the best Aprilaire whole-house humidifier?

There is no single best model for every house:

  • Choose the Aprilaire 600 when a large bypass evaporative unit fits the duct layout and you want high capacity without the electrical demands of steam.
  • Consider the Aprilaire 700 when a fan-powered evaporative design better suits the installation or available airflow arrangement.
  • Consider the Aprilaire 800 when steam is appropriate and the home can support its electrical, plumbing, drain, and distribution requirements.

The most important first question is not “Which model covers the most square feet?” It is “Which humidification method can be correctly installed and controlled by this HVAC system?”

Aprilaire 600: large bypass evaporative humidifier

The Model 600 is Aprilaire’s large bypass evaporative option. Its current listed capacity is 17 gallons per day, with coverage stated for tightly constructed homes up to 5,000 square feet under the manufacturer’s stated AHRI Guideline F assumptions for average-construction homes.

A bypass humidifier uses warm air from the HVAC system to move through a water panel. The moisture-laden air then returns to the duct system. Because it relies on HVAC airflow, the installation layout and furnace operation affect real-world performance.

Why choose the Aprilaire 600?

  • It provides substantial evaporative capacity without the dedicated electrical load of a steam humidifier.
  • It is a practical choice for a compatible forced-air system with suitable supply and return duct access.
  • It uses the replaceable Aprilaire Water Panel 35.
  • The listed package includes a Model 35 Water Panel, 24-volt transformer, outdoor temperature sensor, and saddle valve.

The 600 is not automatically the right choice for every large home. A poorly matched duct layout, insufficient airflow, or a house that loses moisture quickly can limit results even when the square footage appears to fit.

Aprilaire 700: fan-powered evaporative humidifier

The Model 700 is the powered evaporative comparison to the passive bypass design. It includes its own fan to move air through the water panel, rather than relying solely on air passing through a bypass duct.

That distinction can make the 700 more suitable when the installation benefits from powered airflow or when a particular duct arrangement makes a passive bypass design less convenient. It does not mean the 700 is universally better than the 600. The correct choice depends on the HVAC equipment, available space, airflow, controls, and installation plan.

  • FULL COVERAGE up to 5,300 square feet in tightly built homes with a capacity of 18 gallons per day
  • MANUAL HUMIDIFIER with a single sensor built into the standard control monitors indoor relative humidity for use in manually setting the percent humidity in your home
  • BUILT-IN FAN pulls heated air directly from the furnace through the humidifier
  • HUMIDITY FOR HEALTH AprilAire Humidifiers can help you maintain optimal humidity in your home of 40% – 60% so you’ll feel more comfortable while also preserving items in your home susceptible to damage from changing humidity or dry conditions

Why consider the Aprilaire 700?

  • Its built-in fan provides powered airflow through the evaporative water panel.
  • It remains an evaporative system rather than a steam system.
  • It uses the Aprilaire Water Panel 35 according to Aprilaire’s replacement-part compatibility information.
  • It avoids the higher electrical and steam-distribution complexity associated with the Model 800.

Ask the installer to explain why powered airflow is beneficial for your specific duct system. “Fan-powered” alone does not establish that it will produce better humidity in every home.

Aprilaire 800: steam humidifier

The Model 800 is the specialist option. Instead of evaporating water over a panel, it produces steam and distributes it into the HVAC system. Its capacity is determined by the electrical configuration selected during installation.

Electrical configuration Maximum listed capacity
120 volts, 11.5 amps 11.5 gallons per day
208 volts, 11.5 amps 20.5 gallons per day
240 volts, 11.5 amps 23.3 gallons per day
120 volts, 16 amps 16.0 gallons per day
208 volts, 16 amps 30.0 gallons per day
240 volts, 16 amps 34.6 gallons per day

These figures are not a simple performance ranking. They show how the selected voltage and amperage affect output. A Model 800 should never be described with one generic output number without identifying its electrical configuration.

Is the Aprilaire 800 worth it?

The 800 can be worthwhile when steam humidification solves an application problem that an evaporative unit cannot conveniently solve. It may also be appropriate where the HVAC design, home characteristics, or humidity demand make steam the preferred approach.

However, it requires more planning. The installation must account for electrical capacity, water supply, drain routing, steam distribution, and replacement of the steam canister. Aprilaire also specifies cold water for tempering hot drain water during the canister drain cycle. A qualified HVAC professional should confirm the complete installation plan before purchase.

Is Aprilaire 600 or 700 better?

Neither is universally better. The key difference is how air moves through the humidifier:

  • Model 600: large bypass evaporative design that depends on HVAC airflow through the bypass arrangement.
  • Model 700: fan-powered evaporative design with its own blower.

Choose the 600 when a bypass installation fits naturally and you want a high-capacity evaporative system with relatively straightforward requirements. Consider the 700 when powered airflow or the available installation arrangement makes it a better HVAC fit.

Both models use a replaceable water panel, and both require correct water, drain, control, and ductwork arrangements. A model comparison based only on price or nominal square footage misses the installation question that usually determines the result.

What size Aprilaire humidifier do you need?

Use square footage as a starting point, not as the final sizing method. A professional should consider:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Home size, ceiling height, and number of floors.
  • Construction tightness and insulation.
  • Climate and outdoor temperature.
  • Furnace capacity and runtime.
  • Supply and return duct configuration.
  • Whether the home has open-plan areas or isolated zones.
  • Desired indoor humidity and the home’s ability to retain moisture.
  • Available water, drain, control, and electrical connections.

Aprilaire’s Model 800 documentation gives different recommended home sizes for tight, average, and loose construction. That is a useful reminder that a 5,000-square-foot rating does not mean every 5,000-square-foot house will reach or maintain the same humidity level.

Installation requirements

Whole-house humidifiers are generally installed in the ductwork of forced-air HVAC systems. The installation normally involves the following:

  • HVAC compatibility: the system must have suitable ductwork and airflow.
  • Water: a water supply connection is required for the evaporative or steam unit.
  • Drainage: water must be routed safely away from the humidifier; steam systems have additional hot-drain considerations.
  • Controls: the humidistat must be placed and wired correctly.
  • Power: evaporative models and steam models have different electrical needs.
  • Distribution: steam installations require appropriate steam dispersion into the HVAC system.

Aprilaire says the automatic digital controls supplied with Models 400, 500, 600, 700, and 800 are designed for installation on the cold-air return duct. M-designated manual controls can have different placement options. The exact control and installation instructions for the purchased model should take priority.

Can you install an Aprilaire humidifier yourself?

Some homeowners may be comfortable with minor maintenance, but installation is not normally a plug-and-play project. It can involve cutting and sealing ductwork, connecting water and drain lines, wiring controls and transformers, verifying airflow, and—especially for the Model 800—installing a properly sized electrical circuit and steam distribution system.

Use an Aprilaire Healthy Air Professional or another qualified HVAC contractor for model selection and installation. This is particularly important when the home lacks accessible ductwork, has multiple HVAC zones, needs new electrical service, or requires a steam unit.

Water panels and maintenance

Evaporative humidifiers use a consumable water panel. Models 600 and 700 use the Aprilaire Water Panel 35. It is often described by sellers as an “Aprilaire 600 water panel” or “Aprilaire 700 humidifier filter,” although it is a water panel rather than a conventional air filter.

Aprilaire’s maintenance guidance generally calls for replacing the water panel each humidifier season on Models 300, 500, 600, and 700. Model 400 uses a No. 45 panel more frequently. Actual maintenance should follow the instructions for the installed unit and local water conditions.

Replacement checklist

  1. Find the humidifier model number on the cabinet or installation paperwork.
  2. Confirm the replacement part number before ordering.
  3. For Models 600 and 700, check that the product is the genuine Aprilaire 35 Water Panel.
  4. Inspect the distribution tray, drain, water feed, and cabinet for scale or blockage.
  5. Replace the panel at the start of the humidification season or as directed by the manufacturer.

The No. 35 panel is not the correct replacement for every Aprilaire humidifier. Do not order by appearance alone.

Evaporative versus steam: which technology fits?

Factor Evaporative: Models 600 and 700 Steam: Model 800
How moisture is produced Air passes through a wet water panel Water is heated to produce steam
Air movement Bypass airflow or built-in fan, depending on model Steam is distributed into the HVAC system
Electrical complexity Lower-voltage control and power requirements Dedicated electrical planning based on configuration
Consumable maintenance Seasonal water-panel replacement Steam-canister maintenance and replacement
Best decision criterion Duct and airflow fit Humidity application plus electrical and steam-installation feasibility

Questions to ask your HVAC professional

  • Is my HVAC system compatible with a bypass, fan-powered, or steam humidifier?
  • Does my duct layout provide enough airflow for the proposed model?
  • Where will the water supply and drain connect?
  • Where should the automatic control be installed?
  • What electrical circuit does the Model 800 configuration require?
  • What home construction and climate assumptions are being used for sizing?
  • What maintenance parts will I need each season?
  • How will the system prevent excessive humidity and window condensation?

Bottom line

For a compatible forced-air system, the Aprilaire 600 is the straightforward large bypass choice, while the Aprilaire 700 is the powered evaporative alternative when its airflow arrangement better suits the installation. The Aprilaire 800 is the steam specialist for homes that can support its electrical, water, drain, and distribution requirements.

Have the system sized and installed around the home and HVAC equipment—not just the advertised square-footage number. If you choose a Model 600 or 700, verify that you need the genuine Aprilaire 35 Water Panel before ordering replacement parts.
