The best-supported named starting point for cigarette-smoke residue on walls is Krud Kutter Original Cleaner Degreaser. Use it first to remove the sticky nicotine, tar, grease, and grime film. If yellow-brown staining or stale odor remains after the wall is clean and completely dry, follow with a smoke-odor-blocking primer or coating such as Zinsser Odor Killing Primer or Rust-Oleum EnviroShield Odor & Smoke Blocker.
The key is to treat two separate problems: cleaner removes surface residue; primer or sealer blocks odor and stains that have penetrated the wall.
What cigarette smoke leaves on walls
Smoke-contaminated walls can develop a yellow or brown film made up of nicotine, tar, soot, grease, and other particles. That residue may feel sticky, discolor paint, interfere with new paint adhesion, and contribute to a stale smell.
Washing the walls can substantially reduce surface contamination, but it may not remove odor embedded in paint, drywall, plaster, ceilings, trim, carpet, upholstery, or other porous materials. An air cleaner and a fresh HVAC filter may support indoor air quality, but neither replaces washing or sealing the walls.

Best cleaner: Krud Kutter Original Cleaner Degreaser
Krud Kutter Original Cleaner Degreaser is the strongest named fit in the available manufacturer guidance for preparing smoke-contaminated walls. Rust-Oleum’s EnviroShield application instructions specifically recommend washing away dirt, grease, oil, salt, and chemical contaminants with Krud Kutter, commercial detergent, or another suitable cleaner before applying an odor-and-smoke-blocking coating.
That makes it a practical first choice for removing nicotine and smoke film before painting. It does not mean the product is guaranteed to eliminate every odor or stain, particularly where smoke has penetrated porous materials or multiple layers of paint.

Why a degreaser is preferable to ordinary dusting
- Smoke residue is not merely loose dust; it can be oily and adhesive.
- A suitable degreaser helps lift the film so it can be wiped away.
- Removing residue improves the chance that primer and paint will adhere properly.
- Cleaning exposes which stains and odors require a separate sealing product.
How to clean nicotine-stained painted walls
- Stop the smoke source. Ventilate the room where practical. Cleaning cannot provide a lasting result if smoking continues indoors.
- Clear and protect the area. Remove pictures, curtains, and wall hangings. Cover floors and protect trim, outlets, switches, furnishings, and flooring from drips.
- Read the product label and SDS. Follow the stated dilution, contact time, ventilation, and protective-equipment requirements. Wear the gloves, eye protection, and other PPE specified by the product documentation.
- Test an inconspicuous patch. Check for color transfer, gloss changes, softening, bubbling, or paint damage after the test area dries. Wall finishes differ, and an aggressive cleaner can damage a weak or old coating.
- Work from the top down. Clean manageable sections rather than soaking the entire wall. Use enough solution to lift the film without saturating drywall or damaging the finish.
- Use clean cloths or water frequently. Change dirty water and cloths often so the nicotine residue is not spread back across the wall.
- Rinse when directed. Some cleaners require a clean-water rinse or wipe. Follow the label exactly; leftover cleaner can interfere with primer and paint adhesion.
- Let the wall dry completely. Do not prime or paint while the surface is damp. Inspect the dry wall for remaining yellow-brown marks, tackiness, or odor.
When cleaning is not enough
If the wall still smells of smoke or stains bleed through after washing, use a product specifically designed to block smoke odor and stains. Cleaning and sealing are complementary steps, not interchangeable ones.
Zinsser Odor Killing Primer
Rust-Oleum describes Zinsser Odor Killing Primer as intended for difficult existing odors, including cigarette and cigar smoke, fire, and smoke damage, with walls among its suitable applications. It is the logical follow-up when the cleaned, dry wall continues to smell or when you are preparing the room for repainting.

Rust-Oleum EnviroShield Odor & Smoke Blocker
EnviroShield is described as a coating for sealing deeply embedded smoke odors on materials including wallboard, masonry, concrete, and brick. Its application guidance places washing first, so treat it as a smoke-sealing step rather than a substitute for degreasing the wall.
Use the product according to its current label, including coverage, drying, ventilation, and top-coat requirements.

Best option for heavy smoke damage
For severe contamination or restoration work, Unsmoke Wall Wash with Biosolv booster is positioned by its manufacturer for smoke-damaged hard surfaces and includes brightening and deodorizing agents. It is better viewed as a professional or heavy-contamination option than the default choice for a lightly affected painted wall.
Extensive smoke damage may also require cleaning or sealing ceilings, trim, floors, HVAC components, carpet, upholstery, and other porous materials. In some cases, contaminated porous materials cannot be fully deodorized and may need replacement.

Do you need primer after cleaning smoker walls?
Not always, but primer is strongly advisable when odor remains, stains are severe, or you are repainting after substantial smoke exposure. If washing removes the residue and the dry wall has no odor or staining, the existing finish may not require a smoke-blocking primer. However, ordinary paint is not the same as a purpose-made odor and stain blocker.
Before priming, make sure the wall is clean, free of cleaner residue, and fully dry. Apply the blocking product as directed, then wait for its stated drying or curing period before applying the finish paint.

Safety precautions
- Never mix bleach, ammonia, acids, or other cleaning products.
- Use ventilation appropriate to the product label and the space.
- Follow the label and SDS for gloves, eye protection, dilution, contact time, and disposal.
- Be cautious around outlets, switches, damaged drywall, and unsealed surfaces; avoid saturating them.
- Cleaning products, paints, adhesives, air fresheners, and other household chemicals can contain irritants that aggravate asthma or other sensitivities.
- If the wall coating is peeling, crumbling, or repeatedly damaged by moisture, address the substrate before cleaning and painting.
Why the smell may return after wall cleaning
A returning odor does not necessarily mean the wall cleaner failed. Smoke can remain in ceilings, flooring, carpet, furniture, curtains, HVAC components, and porous wall materials. Clean or replace those sources separately, change contaminated filters as appropriate, and inspect the room again after it has dried and been ventilated.
If the room has extensive fire or smoke damage, unknown residues, or persistent odor despite cleaning and sealing, a qualified restoration professional can assess the full scope rather than treating the walls alone.
