The most broadly useful smart kitchen upgrade for more consistent cooking is a wireless food thermometer: its probe stays in the food and sends live temperature updates to a connected device. Induction cooktops and connected ovens can add useful control or automation, but they make more sense when your cookware, cooking habits, installation plans, and budget suit them.
Which smart kitchen upgrade is right for your cooking?
| Technology | Best suited to | What it adds | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless smart food thermometer | Roasts, grilled food, and other dishes where internal temperature matters | A leave-in probe and live temperature updates on a connected device, as described by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service | Probe heat limits, cooking-method suitability, device compatibility, and whether the thermometer is designed to remain in food |
| Induction cooktop | People replacing or renovating a cooking surface who want responsive stovetop heat | Heats compatible cookware directly using an electromagnetic field; DOE reports efficiency and boiling-speed comparisons below | Magnetic cookware, electrical capacity, installation requirements, and total cost |
| Connected oven or cooktop features | People who will use supported sensors, cameras, connected temperature updates, or specialized probe features | Model-dependent cooking assistance and information through an appliance display or connected device | Exact model compatibility, app or connectivity needs, installation, and whether the feature fits your cooking routine |
These are different kinds of upgrades, not interchangeable versions of one product. A thermometer adds information about the food itself; induction changes how a cooktop transfers heat; connected appliance features add model-specific monitoring or control. The available sources do not establish comparable current prices or independent tests ranking particular models, so choose by task and fit rather than a claimed overall winner.
Wireless smart thermometers: live feedback without replacing an appliance
A wireless or smart food thermometer has a probe that remains in the food while it cooks. A connected device displays live temperature status, unlike an instant-read thermometer that is used to take a reading and removed. That makes the category a practical starting point if your main goal is to monitor the interior of a roast, grilled item, or other food as it cooks.
Use a leave-in probe correctly
- Insert the probe at least 1 inch into the thickest part of the food, following USDA guidance for wireless or smart thermometers.
- Check the thermometer manufacturer’s instructions to confirm the probe is designed for the cooking method you plan to use, such as an oven, grill, or slow cooker.
- Do not leave an ordinary thermometer in food during cooking unless its manufacturer says it is designed for that use.
- Check the probe’s heat limits and the thermometer’s device compatibility before purchase. Calibration may be possible, depending on the model.
The USDA’s Food Thermometers guidance explains the distinction between leave-in wireless models and instant-read devices. A live reading can help you monitor progress, but it is not a substitute for following safe-food handling advice or your thermometer’s instructions.

Induction cooktops: fast heat with cookware and installation checks
An induction cooktop uses an electromagnetic field to create heat in compatible cookware rather than heating the cooking surface in the same way as conventional electric elements. The U.S. Department of Energy says the field stops heating when cookware is removed. For a quick compatibility check, DOE advises seeing whether a magnet sticks to the flat bottom of the pan.
In its article published May 11, 2023, DOE reports that induction appliances are up to three times as efficient as gas stoves and up to 10% more efficient than conventional smooth-top electric ranges. These are qualified comparisons, not a guarantee of a household’s energy savings; results depend on equipment and use. DOE also reports that Consumer Reports found induction boiled water 20–40% faster than the gas and traditional electric cooktops it tested. That speed figure belongs to Consumer Reports’ testing as reported by DOE, not to a DOE test. See DOE’s induction cooktop overview for its explanation and comparisons.

Before choosing induction
- Check your everyday pans with a magnet and confirm they have flat bottoms.
- Verify the chosen cooktop’s electrical and installation requirements with the manufacturer and a qualified installer. A built-in replacement may involve checking available electrical capacity as well as the appliance opening.
- Consider whether you are already planning a kitchen renovation or cooktop replacement; induction is a larger commitment than adding a countertop thermometer.
- Compare the full installed cost and the cookware you may need to replace, rather than judging the appliance only by its cooking capabilities.
Connected ovens and cooktops: useful features vary by model
Some connected appliances offer more than remote status. KitchenAid describes smart ranges and wall ovens that can use cooking cameras to recognize supported foods; select wall ovens can provide internal-temperature updates on the oven screen or a connected mobile device. These are manufacturer-described, model-dependent capabilities, so check the exact appliance’s supported foods and functions in KitchenAid’s smart and intelligent appliance guide.
For a more specialized use, GE Appliances describes a Bluetooth precision probe that communicates with compatible GE Café induction cooktops. The manufacturer identifies sous vide, slow cooking, and chocolate applications. This is not a universal induction feature: verify compatibility with the specific cooktop and probe before buying. Details are on the GE Appliances product page.

How to choose without paying for features you will not use
- Name the cooking problem. If you want to monitor internal temperature, start with a suitable leave-in thermometer. If you want a different stovetop heating method, evaluate induction. If you want appliance-based sensing or connected updates, look for a specific oven or cooktop feature that addresses that need.
- Confirm compatibility. Check probe use and heat limits for a thermometer, magnetic pan bottoms for induction, and exact model support for connected appliance features.
- Account for installation. A thermometer normally adds no built-in appliance work. For a cooktop or oven, check the manufacturer’s electrical and installation specifications before committing.
- Weigh ongoing friction. Consider whether you will use a connected device or app, whether the feature needs reliable connectivity, and whether you have convenient storage for any separate probe or accessories.
- Compare total cost and real use. The cited sources do not provide a comparable current price list or independent model benchmarks. Compare the complete purchase and installation costs for the models available to you, then favor the functions that match meals you actually cook.
