Safe use: vent steam and check the food
USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) guidance says to cover microwave foods to hold moisture and promote even heating, and to vent steam. Its microwave cooking guidance states: “Cover foods with a lid or a microwave-safe plastic wrap to hold in moisture and provide safe, even heating.” Follow the cover’s own instructions for its vents and placement.
A cover helps contain splatter; it does not confirm that food is safely reheated or guarantee an even temperature. For ready-to-eat leftovers, USDA FSIS advises heating until steaming hot, allowing standing time, then using a clean food thermometer to check that the food has reached 165 °F.

The FDA advises using microwave-safe cookware and following the microwave oven manufacturer’s instructions. Its microwave oven guidance explains that microwave energy passes through materials such as glass, paper, and ceramic, while heat from food can warm containers. Do not assume a cover changes the time needed to reheat food.
