LATICRETE lists STONETECH Heavy Duty Sealer as a penetrating option for a natural look and STONETECH Enhancer Pro as a penetrating option that enhances color; both list slate and indoor/outdoor use. For showers, check the current product label and technical data sheet for explicit suitability and water-exposure instructions rather than assuming general indoor/outdoor approval covers showers.
Choose a Sealer by the Finish You Want
| Product or type | Appearance | Documented slate and location scope | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| STONETECH Heavy Duty Sealer | Penetrating; preserves a natural look | LATICRETE lists slate and interior/exterior use | Confirm current technical instructions for your project, especially a shower. |
| STONETECH Enhancer Pro | Penetrating; deepens color | LATICRETE lists slate and interior/exterior use; described as weather- and UV-resistant | It changes the stone’s appearance. Test first and check shower directions. |
| Aqua Mix Penetrating Sealer | Penetrating; no-sheen natural look | Aqua Mix’s Australia page lists slate and indoor/outdoor use | Follow the label for your region. Test first and wipe residue completely dry. |
| Aqua Mix Stone Enhancer | Darkens and highlights natural stone | Aqua Mix’s Australia page lists slate and indoor/outdoor use | Wipe away unabsorbed product within five minutes; formulations and availability may vary by region. |
| Topical gloss finish | Surface sheen or gloss | Not established here as a suitable slate finish for wet locations | LATICRETE says its High Gloss Finish & Sealer is not intended for showers or near pool areas. |
These products are not a head-to-head ranking. Compare the finish you want, whether the product penetrates or forms a surface finish, the stated slate and location compatibility, and the exact application and maintenance instructions. The reviewed sources do not provide comparable independent lifespan evidence for ranking products by durability.
Natural Look or Enhanced Color?
Choose a natural-look penetrating sealer if you want to protect the slate without deliberately enriching its color. LATICRETE describes STONETECH Heavy Duty Sealer as preserving the natural look of the surface. Aqua Mix describes its Penetrating Sealer as a no-sheen natural-look product on its Australia page.
Choose a color-enhancing penetrating sealer only if you want the slate to look darker or more vivid. LATICRETE describes Enhancer Pro as weather- and UV-resistant, while Aqua Mix describes Stone Enhancer as darkening and highlighting natural stone, including slate. Because enhancement changes appearance, test a small, inconspicuous area before treating the whole installation.

How to Apply Sealer
Use the current instructions for the exact product you choose. Do not transfer one product’s application timing to another: penetration and wipe-off directions vary.
- Read the current label and technical data sheet. Confirm slate compatibility, permitted locations, preparation, drying, curing, and water-exposure instructions. For showers, look for explicit shower directions.
- Test a small area. Aqua Mix recommends testing its Penetrating Sealer on a small area first. Check how the slate looks and how the product behaves before proceeding.
- Apply as directed. Aqua Mix says to allow its Penetrating Sealer to penetrate and to wipe the surface completely dry. If the surface absorbs it quickly, its instructions say more may be applied to keep it wet for the specified penetration period.
- Remove excess on time. Aqua Mix instructs users of Stone Enhancer to wipe away unabsorbed product within five minutes. Follow the chosen product’s own timing.
- Respect cure and water-exposure directions. Keep the area out of service for the period specified on the current product label.
Slate Sealers in Showers, Patios, and Entryways
Showers
A product’s general indoor/outdoor listing does not by itself establish that it is suitable for a shower or for a particular period of water exposure. Check the current label and technical data sheet for explicit shower suitability, curing time, and water-exposure directions. Do not use a gloss finish in a shower based on appearance alone: LATICRETE explicitly says its High Gloss Finish & Sealer is not intended for showers or near pool areas.

Patios and Other Exterior Slate
The reviewed LATICRETE product pages list slate and interior/exterior use for Heavy Duty Sealer and Enhancer Pro. Aqua Mix’s Australia pages also list slate and indoor/outdoor use for its Penetrating Sealer and Stone Enhancer. Confirm that the current local product instructions cover your conditions before use; availability, formulations, and labels can vary by region.
Entryways and Interior Floors
For an entryway or floor, first decide whether you want a natural appearance or enhanced color, then confirm that the selected product lists slate and the intended location. Test a discreet area and follow the product’s instructions for application and cleanup. A general indoor-use listing is not a substitute for checking specific wet-area directions.

Cleaning and Maintenance
LATICRETE recommends a neutral-pH cleaner for routine stone and tile care. Its care guide cautions that strongly acidic, alkaline, ammoniated, or abrasive cleaners may degrade its sealer and adversely affect stain resistance. This is guidance for LATICRETE’s sealer system, not a guarantee for every product; follow the maintenance directions for the sealer you use.
Do not assume a published longevity claim is a guaranteed service life. Aqua Mix’s Australia pages claim up to five years for Penetrating Sealer and up to three years for Stone Enhancer. These are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative findings, and actual performance depends on site conditions and maintenance.
