Next, consider shape, stacking and nesting, material and weight, lid seal, and the exact model’s appliance-care instructions. A well-fitting container does not change safe food-storage times or temperatures.
Use these decisions to narrow your choices: measure the shelf, drawer, or refrigerator space; check the container’s full footprint and height, including lid features; choose shapes and sizes that make practical use of that space; decide whether glass or plastic suits how you handle and reheat food; and follow the exact product instructions and food-safety guidance.
Measure the Space Before Choosing Containers
Measure usable width, depth, and vertical clearance in the cupboard, drawer, or refrigerator where each container will go. Also check the opening and the path through it. Shelf lips, drawer walls, lid latches, and handles can affect whether a container fits or can be removed easily. Leave enough room to lift it out comfortably.
Compare your measurements with the container’s outside dimensions. Capacity alone does not tell you whether the footprint or height will work. For example, OXO lists its 5.1-cup Good Grips Smart Seal plastic container at 9.4 × 6.6 × 2.7 inches. Rubbermaid lists its 8-cup Brilliance large rectangle model at 11.6 × 7.6 × 2.765 inches. Those are examples for the specific models, not dimensions for every container in either product line.

Shape is another fit factor, but there is no universal rule that one shape is best for every kitchen. Compare actual footprints in your available space. OXO’s cited 1-cup glass round container, for example, measures 4.5 × 4.5 × 2.5 inches.
Compare Containers for Everyday Use
When comparing options, consider the space each container occupies, how it stores when full and empty, what you will put in it, and how it will be carried, cleaned, or reheated.

Product features vary by model. OXO describes its cited Smart Seal containers as stacking in the refrigerator and nesting in a cupboard when empty. Rubbermaid describes Brilliance as modular and stackable, and says its Brilliance lids fit Brilliance containers across material types. Do not assume that these descriptions apply across brands or to every product in a line.

Choose Glass or Plastic by Use
Choose material based on how you handle and use the container, then check the instructions for the exact model. Weight, transport, reheating, and care can matter as much as capacity.
OXO describes its cited 1-cup glass container as borosilicate, suitable for freezer-to-preheated-oven use, and microwave-safe. Rubbermaid describes its cited Brilliance glass base as oven-safe up to 450°F and suitable for freezer, microwave, and dishwasher use. Its instructions specify that microwave use is for reheating with the lid unlatched; the lids are top-rack dishwasher-safe. These claims are specific to the cited products; check the instructions for the container you buy.
OXO describes its cited plastic Smart Seal container as BPA-free, with a removable silicone seal and four locking tabs. Those features do not establish the care limits of other plastic containers. Follow the instructions for your exact model, including any restrictions for the base, lid, seal, and locking parts.

Do not infer that a lid is airtight from its appearance or material. Pyrex Home states, “Plastic lids are not airtight,” in its product warranty and use-and-care guidance. That statement is specific to Pyrex Home’s guidance; check the seal and instructions for the product you own.
Store Food Safely, Not Just Neatly
A container’s fit and convenience do not extend safe storage times or make an unsafe temperature safe. The FDA advises keeping the refrigerator at or below 40°F (4°C), covering refrigerated food, and avoiding overcrowding that prevents air from circulating.

The FDA also advises putting perishables that require refrigeration away within two hours, or within one hour when the air temperature is above 90°F. These are FDA time limits, not claims that any particular container changes those limits.

For raw meat, poultry, and seafood, USDA FSIS advises sealing or wrapping items securely to prevent their juices from contaminating other foods. For a large pot of soup or stew, USDA FSIS advises dividing it into small portions and placing those portions in shallow containers before refrigerating.
How to Choose a Set That Fits
- Measure the usable width, depth, and height of the storage space and its opening.
- Compare those measurements with the outside dimensions of each container, including lid latches or handles.
- Choose shapes and sizes that work in your measured space; check stacking when full and nesting when empty.
- Pick glass or plastic based on how you will handle, transport, clean, and reheat the container.
- Read the exact model’s instructions for its lid, seal, and freezer, microwave, oven, and dishwasher use.
- Follow FDA and USDA food-safety guidance separately from product-care claims.
Named product pages can help illustrate how specifications are presented, but they are not hands-on test results or universal recommendations. Compare the specific models’ published dimensions and care instructions with your own needs before deciding.

How do I know if a food storage container will fit in my refrigerator?
Measure the usable width, depth, and height of the shelf and the space through which you need to move the container. Compare those measurements with the container’s outside dimensions, including its lid and any latches or handles, and leave room to remove it.

Should I compare container capacity or dimensions?
Compare outside dimensions first to check fit. Capacity describes volume, but it does not tell you whether a container’s footprint or height suits a shelf, drawer, or refrigerator opening.
Are stackable and nesting containers the same?
