The right choice depends on the unit opening, occupancy, delivery access, utility responsibility, local service, and budget—not a universal brand winner. No independent rental-specific comparison establishes one best refrigerator model.
Measure the space and delivery route first
Before comparing models, record the maximum height, width, and depth available. Account for trim, uneven flooring, ventilation needs, and the clearance required for doors to open fully. Also check the route from the delivery vehicle to the kitchen, including narrow doorways, stairs, and turns.
Clearance requirements vary by model. Use the selected refrigerator’s installation manual for final measurements; LG’s refrigerator clearance guide offers model-specific guidance.
Match capacity and configuration to the property
Choose capacity for the expected occupancy and available space. ENERGY STAR advises buying an appropriately sized refrigerator and notes that larger units generally use more energy. Its most energy-efficient models are typically 16–20 cubic feet, a comparison reference rather than a requirement for every rental.

ENERGY STAR says top-freezer models tend to use less energy than bottom-freezer and side-by-side configurations, and fewer doors can reduce air leakage. Those are energy considerations, not proof of superior reliability. Choose a layout tenants can use comfortably without exceeding the available space.
Compare energy use when the owner pays the utility bill
If the landlord pays for electricity, compare the EnergyGuide labels and current ENERGY STAR certification of specific models. ENERGY STAR reports that certified refrigerators are about 9 percent more energy efficient than models meeting the federal minimum standard. Its buying guidance estimates about $150 in savings over a 12-year product lifetime when replacing and properly recycling an old refrigerator with a new certified unit. These are program estimates, not rental-specific guarantees; actual results depend on the refrigerator, usage, electricity rates, and the appliance being replaced.
ENERGY STAR’s 2021 consumer refrigeration criteria describe qualifying full-size refrigerators and refrigerator-freezers of at least 7.75 cubic feet as using 10 percent less measured energy than federal minimum standards. That figure refers to those criteria and should not be treated as a current model’s exact savings; check certification and energy-use information for the model under consideration.
Weigh features against cost and upkeep
Dispensers, smart features, and premium finishes may suit some properties, but they are not automatically poor choices. Weigh their purchase cost, convenience, fit with the rental segment, and potential service needs against the value they add. A simpler model may be the better match when durability, straightforward operation, and replacement availability matter more than extras.

Before ordering, ask local suppliers about delivery lead times, haul-away, parts availability, warranty handling, and repair coverage. These practical details can matter more to a rental than a feature comparison, particularly when a refrigerator must be replaced quickly.

For portfolio owners, GE Appliances Pro offers property-manager ordering and support. The company says its top-freezer models undergo more than 1 million hinge and door cycles—three times the UL testing standard—and have a first-year service rate below 2 percent. These are GE’s own claims, not independent comparisons proving greater reliability than other brands.

ENERGY STAR recommends allowing a few inches behind the refrigerator, keeping it away from heat sources, checking door seals, and maintaining an interior temperature of 35–38°F. Clean coils on older models only when the appliance manual permits it. A coil-cleaning brush can be useful for that task where the manual allows coil cleaning.
Compare actual models before buying
Once the space and operating needs are clear, compare current models on the factors that affect this particular property:

- Purchase and replacement: current cost, availability, delivery timing, and haul-away.
- Service: local repair options, parts supply, and warranty handling.
- Features and finish: whether extras and appearance suit the rental without adding unjustified cost or upkeep.
No single ideal price point or universal brand ranking is established. Verify current specifications, certification, warranty terms, stock, and service options for each model you are considering.
