Compare models using the same cooling-capacity rating—SACC—then check the vent setup, window fit, efficiency information, drainage and the manufacturer’s stated room coverage. The available specifications here support two LG examples, not an independently tested ranking of the market’s “best” units.
What counts as a portable air conditioner?
A portable air conditioner is a movable, self-contained unit that cools indoor air and sends heat outdoors through a window duct. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) defines the regulated category as “a portable encased assembly, other than a ‘packaged terminal air conditioner,’ ‘room air conditioner,’ or ‘dehumidifier,’ that delivers cooled, conditioned air to an enclosed space, and is powered by single-phase electric current.” DOE identifies Appendix CC of 10 CFR 430 as the test procedure manufacturers use for compliance. Standards established in DOE’s January 10, 2020 final rule require compliance beginning January 10, 2025. DOE: Portable Air Conditioners
This guide uses U.S. product and regulatory information. Availability, electrical requirements, rating systems and consumer rules may differ in other countries.
How to compare portable air conditioners
Compare SACC capacity with SACC capacity
For cooling capacity, compare a model’s SACC (Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity) rating with other models’ SACC ratings. Do not treat SACC and ASHRAE BTU/h as interchangeable numbers: they use different rating bases. LG displays both ratings for some products and explains that the DOE capacity rating can be substantially lower than the older ASHRAE figure for the same unit. DOE’s reporting materials also identify SACC as a field for portable-AC comparisons. LG LP0825WSSM specifications · DOE reporting and test information

- 3-in-1 Portable Air Conditioner: Enjoy cool air (64°F- 90°F) during hot summer days, plus dehumidifier and fan modes for comfortable air circulation when temperatures are milder. Everything you need for year-round comfort in one AC unit
- Comfort Sleep Mode: Sleep mode and programmable 1-24 hour timer maintain your ideal room temperature automatically. Ultra-quiet operation below 50dB won't interrupt sleep, while two adjustable fan speeds let you customize airflow
- Quick Window Installation: Comes ready to install with exhaust hose and adjustable window kit that fits widths from 20.48 to 49 inches. No handyman skills required—set up completely in just minutes and start cooling immediately(for small windows, trimming may be necessary)
- No-hassle Maintenance: Advanced Self-evaporating operation effectively reduces the frequency of manual water draining. The washable filter captures dust effectively and slides out easily for quick cleaning whenever needed—keeping air fresher longer
- Room-to-Room Versatility: Lightweight with smooth-rolling casters, this compact AC moves effortlessly wherever cooling is needed. Perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, garages—any space up to 750 square feet
A higher capacity rating alone does not establish that a model is the right fit for a particular room. Treat manufacturer coverage figures as claims, and account for the room’s sunlight, heat sources and layout. The available sources do not establish a universal square-foot-per-SACC formula for portable air conditioners.
Check the duct and window setup
DOE recognizes both single-duct and dual-duct portable AC configurations. Confirm which arrangement a model uses and whether its included window vent kit can be installed in your window type and opening. A unit that cannot be vented securely to the outdoors will not work as intended. DOE: Portable Air Conditioners

- Quick No-Drill Window Installation: The package includes a remote control and a complete window installation kit with an adjustable exhaust hose and window panels. Fits most double-hung or sliding windows, requires no drilling, and can be set up in minutes — ideal for renters or temporary cooling needs.
Use efficiency figures carefully
DOE identifies CEER (Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio) as a reportable portable-AC field. Compare CEER values when they are available for the exact models you are considering. Do not transfer ENERGY STAR room-air-conditioner claims or DOE Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) room-AC savings estimates to a portable unit: the cited FEMP purchasing guidance expressly excludes portable air conditioners. Check noise and condensate handling
If noise matters, compare decibel specifications only when manufacturers provide comparable figures and measurement conditions. The official sources cited here do not provide a consistent cross-model noise comparison.

- Three-in-One Unit: Our 14,000 BTU ASHRAE (10,200 BTU SACC) air conditioner also functions as a dehumidifier & fan. This portable air conditioner has a full function remote control & top mounted control panel with LED display
- Portable AC: Take this personal air conditioner (16.5” x 14.06” x 27.09) in rooms up to 700 sq. ft. Stay cool in the hot summer months and sleep well with this BLACK+DECKER ac unit for bedroom
- Smart AC with Voice Control: This smart air conditioner allows Wi-Fi connectivity and can be controlled using our mobile app available on iOS and Google Play stores, and voice controlled by Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant
- Follow Me Remote: Our portable AC unit comes with a full function remote control that features a FOLLOW ME function, which allows the remote to act as a thermostat for precise temperature control
- Installation Kit: When it comes to fans that blow cold air, this indoor ac unit includes an easy-to-install window kit. A large, vented airflow outlet ushers in cool air
Read the manual for the condensate-removal method and care instructions. DOE’s reporting materials recognize auto-evaporation, gravity drainage, a collection bucket and a condensate pump. Auto-evaporation does not guarantee that a unit will never need draining; requirements can depend on operating conditions and the manufacturer’s instructions. DOE: Portable Air Conditioners

Why room-air-conditioner sizing charts do not settle portable-AC sizing
ENERGY STAR publishes a room-air-conditioner sizing chart and notes that an oversized room AC can cost more and waste energy. That is useful general advice to size thoughtfully, but it is not a portable-AC sizing validation. Likewise, FEMP’s modeled electricity use, cost and lifetime-savings figures apply to room air conditioners in its purchasing guidance, not portable units. Use the portable model’s own SACC rating and coverage claim as starting points, then consider the room conditions rather than treating a room-AC chart as a portable sizing rule. A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Match SACC to SACC when comparing cooling capacity; keep any ASHRAE figure separate.
- Use listed room coverage as a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee for every room.
- Confirm whether the model is single-duct or dual-duct and whether the vent kit fits your window.
- Compare CEER where available for the exact models, without applying room-AC program claims to portable units.
- Check decibel specifications only on a comparable basis, if noise is a priority.
- Understand the condensate-removal method and the manual’s drainage and maintenance instructions.
- Verify current price, availability, model specifications and any local program eligibility before purchase.
ENERGY STAR says local partners sponsor rebates on certified products and provides a rebate finder, but that does not establish eligibility for portable air conditioners. Check your local program and confirm that the exact product qualifies before counting on a rebate. ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder
