Best Ninja Air Fryers: Ninja’s Models Evaluated by Experts

The best Ninja air fryer depends on how you cook. Compare single-basket, DualZone, DoubleStack and Crispi models by usable capacity, footprint, thermometer features, cleaning and expert testing.

The best Ninja air fryer for most people is the Ninja Air Fryer Pro XL AF181 if you want one roomy basket, simple controls, high heat, and strong independent test results. For families cooking two foods at once, choose the Ninja Foodi Smart DZ550. The DZ401 is the better dual-basket value when discounted, while the DoubleStack XL SL401 is the most convincing option when counter width is limited.

There is no universal winner. The right choice depends mainly on whether you need one broad cooking surface or two independent zones—and whether features such as an integrated thermometer, glass storage containers, or a vertical design solve a real problem in your kitchen.

What the expert testing says

The answer changes depending on what “best” means. Good Housekeeping names the AF181 its best overall Ninja air fryer after testing 14 Ninja air fryers as part of a broader program involving 70 air fryers and 28 air-fryer toaster ovens. Its reported test foods included chicken wings, frozen fries, grilled cheese, and mozzarella sticks. The publication found the AF181 easy to use and reported strong results for fries and wings.

RTINGS currently places the DZ550 at the top of its overall air-fryer recommendations. That reflects a different priority: the DZ550 is more versatile for simultaneous cooking and adds an integrated temperature probe. RTINGS also describes the AF181 as fast but less even-cooking than the COSORI TurboBlaze, so speed and browning consistency should not be treated as the same measurement.

Ninja Foodi Air Fryer, 8 Qt DualZone, 6-in-1, Grey, DZ201
  • SMART FINISH & MATCH COOK: DualZone Technology allows you to choose between the Smart Finish feature, which unlocks cooking 2 foods 2 ways that finish at the same time, and the and a Match Cook button to easily copy settings across zones for full 8-qt capacity.
  • 6-IN-1 FUNCTIONALITY: Includes 6 versatile cooking programs: Air Fry, Air Broil, Roast, Bake, Reheat, and Dehydrate. The baskets can be washed in the dishwasher or by hand.
  • XL CAPACITY: The 8-quart air fryer capacity lets you fit mains and sides at the same time for making quick family meals, or up to 4 lbs. of French fries or chicken wings.
  • SEPARATE HEATING ZONES: 2 independent 4-quart zones have their own cooking baskets, cyclonic fans, and rapid heaters.
  • EASY CLEANING: Easy-to-clean baskets and dishwasher-safe crisper plates.

TechRadar’s buying guidance divides Ninja’s range by workflow: DualZone models for larger households, DoubleStack for similar capacity in less counter width, Crispi for glass-container storage and portability, and Ninja countertop ovens for foods such as pizza and toast. Its coverage includes U.K. models, however, so U.S. shoppers should verify every model number, voltage, capacity, and plug before buying.

Model-by-model evaluations

Ninja Air Fryer Pro XL AF181: best single-basket choice

Best for: Everyday air frying, one large batch, fries, wings, vegetables, and buyers who prefer simple operation.

  • Capacity: 6.5 quarts
  • Functions: Max Crisp, Air Fry, Air Roast, Bake, Reheat, and Dehydrate
  • Maximum temperature: 450°F
  • Power: 1,750 watts; 120V
  • Official dimensions: 16.3 × 12.6 × 14.17 inches
  • Warranty: One-year limited warranty

The AF181 is the strongest general-purpose recommendation when you mainly cook one food or one meal at a time. Its square basket provides a broad, uninterrupted cooking surface that can be more useful than two narrower baskets for a single layer of fries, nuggets, vegetables, sandwiches, or other flat foods.

Its 450°F Max Crisp mode is useful for high-heat browning, although a high maximum temperature does not guarantee better results. Load size, moisture, shaking, preheating, and temperature stability matter too. Good Housekeeping reports strong fries and wings performance, while RTINGS reports fast cooking with less even results than one competing model.

The official page identifies the basket and crisper plate as nonstick and dishwasher-safe. That does not mean every component is dishwasher-safe; check the manual before putting other parts in the dishwasher.

Buy it if: You want the simplest strong Ninja recommendation and rarely need two different foods to finish together.

Skip it if: You regularly cook a protein and side at different temperatures, or you need two cooking zones.

Ninja Foodi Smart DZ550: best for families and doneness monitoring

Best for: Families, two-part meals, and cooks who frequently prepare meat to a target internal temperature.

  • Capacity: 10 quarts total, divided into two 5-quart baskets
  • Functions: Air Fry, Air Broil, Roast, Bake, Reheat, and Dehydrate
  • Features: Smart Finish, Match Cook, IQ Boost, and integrated Foodi Smart Thermometer
  • Power: 1,690 watts
  • Warranty: One-year limited warranty

The DZ550 is the most capable choice when the main problem is coordinating food rather than simply crisping it. You can cook a protein in one basket and a side in the other, select different settings, and use Smart Finish to have them complete at the same time. Match Cook copies settings across both zones when you need the full capacity for one type of food.

The integrated thermometer is the principal difference from the DZ401. It is valuable for chicken breasts, steaks, pork, fish, and larger pieces of meat where internal doneness matters. It does not automatically make fries, vegetables, frozen snacks, or reheated leftovers better, and correct probe placement still matters. A DZ401 paired with a separate instant-read thermometer may be the better-value solution for occasional meat cooks.

Remember that 10 quarts is combined capacity, not one 10-quart cavity. The two baskets are physically separate, so the DZ550 is not automatically better for one large roast, broad flatbread, or a wide single layer of food.

Ninja Foodi DZ401: best dual-basket value

Best for: Families wanting DualZone cooking without paying for integrated smart temperature monitoring.

  • Capacity: 10 quarts total, with two 5-quart baskets
  • Functions: Air Fry, Air Broil, Roast, Bake, Reheat, and Dehydrate
  • Features: Smart Finish, Match Cook, and IQ Boost
  • Thermometer: No integrated smart thermometer listed on the official product page
  • Warranty: One-year limited warranty

The DZ401 preserves the core reason to buy a dual-basket Ninja: independent cooking zones. Its value depends heavily on the price gap versus the DZ550. If the DZ401 is meaningfully cheaper and you already own an instant-read thermometer, it is the rational buy.

It is a conventional side-by-side design, so it needs considerable counter width. It also has more removable parts to wash than a single-basket model. The two baskets are useful for parallel meals, but their narrower geometry may be less convenient than the AF181’s single broad basket for one large layer of food.

Buy it if: You need two zones and do not need an integrated probe.

Skip it if: The price is close to the DZ550, you need a narrower layout, or you mostly cook small portions.

See the DZ401’s current U.S. specifications.

  • Capacity: 10 quarts total, in two 5-quart baskets
  • Features: Two stacked meal racks, Smart Finish, Match Cook, and six cooking functions
  • Power: 1,690 watts
  • Warranty: One-year limited warranty

The SL401 addresses a specific kitchen problem: a side-by-side dual-basket air fryer is too wide. Its vertical arrangement can free counter width and adds racks for two-level cooking in each basket.

“Space-saving” does not mean smaller in every dimension. Measure width, depth, height, cabinet clearance, rear ventilation space, and the area needed to pull out and inspect the upper basket. The appliance is taller and may be heavier or less convenient to load than a conventional drawer-style DualZone model. Stacked racks can increase capacity, but they also make loading and turning food more involved.

Buy it if: Width is your primary limitation and you can comfortably access a tall appliance.

  • FAMILY-SIZED CAPACITY: 4-quart ceramic-coated nonstick basket and crisper plate fit 2 lbs of French fries.

Ninja Crispi FN101: best for glass storage and leftovers

Best for: Reheating, meal prep, portability, visible cooking, and taking food from the refrigerator to the table or workplace.

  • Container capacity: 4 quarts
  • Functions: Four
  • Included vessels: Two glass containers

The Crispi is not simply a conventional basket air fryer with glass instead of nonstick metal. Its central benefit is that the cooking vessel can also serve as a storage container. That makes it particularly appealing for leftovers and prepared meals.

The trade-offs are practical. Hot glass can be uncomfortable to handle and requires care; glass is also heavier and breakable. The FN101 is less suited to large family batches or cooking several components at once. Good Housekeeping names it its best glass Ninja model while noting the storage convenience and hotter-to-touch vessel.

Buy it if: Storage and portability are central to your routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: You only want maximum crisping capacity per dollar or routinely cook family-size meals.

See Ninja’s current Crispi range.

Ninja Crispi Pro AS101: larger glass-container option

Best for: Buyers who like the Crispi workflow but need more capacity and more functions.

  • Container capacity: 6 quarts
  • Functions: Six
  • Included vessels: Two glass containers

The Crispi Pro expands the glass-container concept, but its higher price only makes sense if the storage and portability advantages are important. If your priority is simply fries, wings, or frozen food, a conventional basket model will usually be the more direct choice.

RTINGS describes the AS101 as cooking well but more slowly than some competitors. That is comparative test evidence, not a universal statement about every food or setting.

Ninja Air Fryer Pro AF141: best compact choice

Best for: One or two people, small kitchens, snacks, and modest portions.

  • Capacity: 5 quarts
  • Functions: Four
  • Technology: Air Crisp

A compact Ninja is preferable to a 10-quart dual-basket machine when most meals are small. Good Housekeeping describes a 4-quart Ninja model as a compact one-to-two-person option with four common modes and a 105–400°F range. The AF141 is the current 5-quart compact model listed in Ninja’s U.S. category snapshot.

Head-to-head comparisons

AF181 vs DZ401

Choose the AF181 for one broad basket, simpler cleaning, and one large batch. Choose the DZ401 for two foods, two temperatures, and Smart Finish. The DZ401’s 10-quart figure is divided between two zones, so it is not a straightforward capacity upgrade for large flat foods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DZ401 vs DZ550

They share the DualZone format, Smart Finish, Match Cook, and two 5-quart baskets. The DZ550’s meaningful hardware advantage is its integrated Foodi Smart Thermometer. Pay extra for it when you frequently cook meat to a target temperature; otherwise, buy the DZ401 when the discount is substantial.

DZ550 vs SL401

The DZ550 is the better fit for buyers who value the integrated thermometer and familiar side-by-side access. The SL401 is the better fit when counter width is scarce. Verify the exact SL401 variant and dimensions, because product-page presentations and bundles can differ.

AF181 vs Crispi

The AF181 is the better conventional air fryer for general crisping and larger everyday batches. The Crispi is the better specialized system if you want glass vessels that move directly into storage. Do not buy the Crispi solely because glass sounds more premium; its value comes from the storage workflow.

Crispi vs Crispi Pro

The FN101 is the smaller, simpler 4-quart system with four functions. The AS101 increases capacity to 6 quarts and offers six functions. The Pro is justified when the extra capacity and functionality matter; it is not automatically better for a small household.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose the right Ninja

  1. Decide whether you cook one food or two. Choose AF181 for one broad surface; choose DZ401, DZ550, or SL401 for parallel cooking.
  2. Consider usable geometry, not only quarts. A single 6.5-quart basket and two 5-quart baskets solve different problems.
  3. Measure the entire countertop installation. Include width, depth, height, basket-opening room, cabinet clearance, and rear ventilation.
  4. Pay for the thermometer only if you will use it. It is mainly a meat-doneness feature, not a universal crisping upgrade.
  5. Choose glass for storage—not for an assumed health benefit. Glass offers visibility and portability but is heavier, hotter to handle, and breakable.
  6. Plan for cleaning and parts. Two baskets, crisper plates, and racks mean more washing and potentially more replacement parts. Confirm the exact accessory and warranty support for the model and suffix you buy.
  7. Check the exact U.S. model number. Suffixes such as SL401SD, SL451, DZ401SD, and AF181WP may indicate different bundles, colors, or accessories.

Prices and availability

Official U.S. price signals observed August 16–18, 2026 varied between category pages, product pages, promotions, and bundles. Confirm the exact model and price at checkout rather than treating a sale price as the normal price.

  • AF181: observed at $119.99 on one product-page capture and $179.99 on the category listing.
  • DZ550: observed at $249.99 on the opened product page, with a separate official search capture showing $179.99 promotional pricing.
  • DZ401: observed at $229.99.
  • SL401: observed at $209.99 sale versus $249.99 list.
  • Crispi FN101: observed at $159.99 sale versus $179.99 listed.
  • Crispi Pro AS101: observed at $299.99, with some bundles around $329.99.
  • AF141: observed at $129.99.

These are dated price signals, not permanent prices or proof of long-term value. Current Ninja pages commonly list one-year limited warranties for the main models covered here. Shipping, returns, replacement-part availability, and accessory pricing can change.

Cleaning, coatings, and materials

Clean baskets and crisper plates soon after cooking so grease does not bake on. Use nonabrasive tools to protect nonstick surfaces, and follow the manual for the heating element and interior. “Dishwasher-safe” applies only to the parts specifically identified by the manufacturer.

Do not generalize one model’s construction across the whole range. The AF181’s official page describes a nonstick basket and crisper plate. Other Ninja models may use different basket, rack, or glass components. The available evidence does not justify blanket claims that every Ninja air fryer is “non-toxic,” “chemical-free,” or materially identical.

When an air fryer is the wrong Ninja appliance

Consider a Ninja countertop oven instead if you regularly make pizza, toast, broad trays of food, roasts, or meals requiring multiple rack positions. Consider a grill or multicooker if those functions are central to your cooking. These products are alternatives, not direct equivalents to a drawer-style basket air fryer, and they generally require different counter depth and storage arrangements.

Final verdict

Buy the AF181 for the best straightforward single-basket experience. Buy the DZ550 when two-zone cooking and an integrated meat thermometer solve everyday problems. Choose the DZ401 when it is meaningfully cheaper, the SL401 when width is the limiting dimension, and the Crispi when glass storage and portability matter more than maximum family capacity.
