The Narwal J5 Max is a real robot vacuum-and-mop launched for mainland China in March 2025—not a confirmed global or US release. Launch reports list an advertised maximum suction power of 18,500Pa, AI vision-based obstacle avoidance, a 12N mopping pressure claim, and two dock configurations. Reported prices started at ¥3,599 for the water-tank version and ¥4,099 for the automatic water-supply-and-drainage version.
For international buyers, however, the most important issue is not the headline suction figure. Narwal’s regional-availability policy warns that products sold in mainland China may not bind to the app or receive normal support outside their original sales region.
Narwal J5 Max launch date and price
Narwal’s Chinese brand, 云鲸 (Yunjing/Narwal), listed and launched the J5 Max in mainland China around March 21–22, 2025. A later report from IT之家 said nationwide spot-sale availability began on April 10, 2025. Those dates describe the difference between an initial launch or listing and broader retail availability; neither establishes a worldwide launch.
| Configuration | Reported China list price | Reported China subsidy price |
|---|---|---|
| Water-tank version | ¥3,599 | ¥2,974 |
| Automatic water-supply-and-drainage version | ¥4,099 | ¥3,399 |
The subsidy prices reported by IT之家 were China-specific figures. They may depend on government-subsidy eligibility, location, retailer, and timing. They are not confirmed international MSRPs, and converting them into a US price would ignore shipping, taxes, electrical compatibility, installation, and warranty costs.

Narwal J5 Max specifications
| Specification or feature | What launch coverage reports |
|---|---|
| Maximum suction | 18,500Pa advertised maximum |
| Battery | 5,200mAh |
| Runtime | Up to three hours, depending on settings and conditions |
| Obstacle recognition | More than 100 household objects claimed |
| Obstacle crossing | Up to 2cm claimed |
| Mopping pressure | 12N downward pressure claimed |
| Mop washing | Hot-water washing reported at approximately 45°C–75°C |
| Dust bag interval | Up to 90 days claimed, depending on use |
These figures come from launch reports and manufacturer-facing specifications, not independent standardized testing. The available evidence does not establish that the J5 Max is a proven performance leader.
What 18,500Pa suction actually tells you
Narwal advertises a maximum suction pressure of 18,500Pa, supported by a new self-developed fan. That is a notable headline specification, but pascals measure pressure rather than the complete amount of debris a robot can collect.
Actual pickup depends on airflow, brush agitation, the seal between the robot and floor, cleaning speed, dust-bin design, floor texture, and software settings. Two robots with different Pa ratings can perform differently in independent testing. The J5 Max’s 18,500Pa figure should therefore be read as an advertised maximum—not a standardized ranking against Roborock, Dreame, or other brands.
Narwal also reports a cyclone-guided, zero-tangle roller brush and hair-oriented side brushes designed to extend outward and direct debris toward the intake. “Zero-tangle” is best understood as a design goal or marketing label. Long hair can still collect around bearings, side-brush mounts, wheels, or parts of the brush outside the main anti-tangle path.
How the AI obstacle avoidance works
Launch coverage describes the J5 Max as using a single-lens vision system for AI obstacle avoidance. Narwal reportedly claims recognition of more than 100 household objects, as well as the ability to cross obstacles up to 2cm high.
Object recognition is not the same as guaranteed avoidance. A camera-based system may behave differently around thin charging cables, transparent or reflective items, black objects in poor lighting, socks, small toys, curtains touching the floor, and clutter under furniture. Pet accidents are a separate concern: recognizing an object does not necessarily mean the robot can safely identify wet or contaminated material before driving through it.

Narwal’s documentation for related Chinese-market products describes combinations of radar, cameras or binocular vision, edge sensors, bump sensors, and infrared drop sensors. Those details should not automatically be treated as the J5 Max’s exact sensor package unless the J5 Max manual confirms them. The available launch reports also do not provide independent obstacle-avoidance testing.
The claimed 2cm crossing height will depend on the obstacle’s shape, firmness, angle, and location. A square threshold may behave differently from a loose cable or a rounded transition strip.

Mopping, brush design, and dock automation
The J5 Max uses Narwal’s triangular rotating mop system and a “bionic human-hand” wiping design. Launch materials report 12N of downward pressure, intended to help the mop scrub harder than a lightly dragged pad.
Pressure is only one part of stain removal. Results also depend on mop rotation or movement, water temperature, cleaning solution, the number of passes, drying time, and the type and age of the stain. The 12N specification does not prove that the robot will remove every dried spill.
Reported dock functions include:
- Automatic dust collection;
- Automatic mop washing;
- Hot-water mop rinsing at approximately 45°C–75°C;
- Intelligent mop drying; and
- Automatic water exchange on the plumbing-connected version.
The reported temperature is a range or operating claim, not evidence that every wash cycle runs at 75°C. Similarly, a claimed dust-bag interval of up to 90 days is usage-dependent. Pet hair, long hair, heavy dust, frequent cleaning, and a large household can shorten that interval substantially.
Water-tank versus automatic plumbing dock
Water-tank version
The tank model uses onboard clean- and dirty-water containers. It is generally the more practical option for renters, apartments without suitable plumbing, or anyone who wants to avoid installation work. The trade-off is routine handling: the clean-water tank must be filled and the dirty-water tank emptied.

- Lies 180° Flat and Turns 63°: S30 Pro vacuum mop all in one glides under sofas and low-lying areas thanks to its 180° lie-down design. Turning around table legs and reaching the edges of sideboards and toe-kicks is a breeze, made easy by the easy-turn handle that swivels 63°.
Automatic water-supply-and-drainage version
The higher-priced model connects to household water and drainage, reducing manual tank handling. It needs a suitable water supply, drain access, hose routing, clearance, and a leak-safe installation. Renters may also need permission before modifying cabinetry or plumbing.
Narwal’s service material discusses automatic-water installation and service standards in China, but that does not establish installation or repair support in the United States or other countries. A plumbed dock is not automatically the better choice: it is better only when the home can safely accommodate it.
Maintenance and recurring consumables
Even a highly automated dock does not make the robot maintenance-free. Owners should expect periodic inspection and replacement of:
- Dust bags;
- Filters;
- Side brushes;
- The main roller brush;
- Mop pads or track-mop components;
- Cleaning solution; and
- Water-system filters and plumbing accessories, where applicable.
Long hair may still need to be removed from brush bearings and wheel areas. Tanks, washboards, sensors, and the dock’s drainage path may also need cleaning. The available sources do not provide a verified current J5 Max-specific international consumables catalogue or price list, so buyers should confirm local availability before importing.

Launch coverage lists a 5,200mAh battery and up to three hours of continuous cleaning. “Up to” matters: suction mode, mopping, floor type, navigation complexity, obstacle avoidance, and the size of the area all affect runtime.
In a larger home, the robot may return to the dock to recharge and then resume. The three-hour figure should not be treated as a guaranteed whole-home cleaning time or as a promise of three hours at the highest suction and mopping settings.

Is the Narwal J5 Max available in the US?
No verified official US J5 Max sales listing is established by the available launch evidence. Narwal’s US storefront currently presents other products, including the Narwal Flow, Freo Z10, and Freo Z10 Ultra. Those pages are the appropriate place to check current US pricing, stock, warranty, and support rather than treating the China-market J5 Max as a US model.
Narwal’s regional policy says products sold in mainland China are intended for use and after-sales support in mainland China, excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Narwal warns that an imported unit may not bind to the app or support all operations outside its original region.
An overseas buyer should verify all of the following before considering an import:
- Whether the robot can be registered in the intended app region;
- Language, firmware, mapping, and cloud-service compatibility;
- Voltage and plug requirements;
- Availability of model-specific bags, brushes, filters, mop parts, and cleaning solution;
- Return shipping and repair arrangements; and
- Whether any seller warranty is enforceable in the buyer’s country.
A low converted RMB price can disappear after international shipping, tax, adapters, installation, and the loss of local warranty. Based on Narwal’s stated policy, the J5 Max is not a safe import recommendation for most US shoppers seeking simple setup and dependable local service.
What the J5 Max may—and may not—be good at
The product is potentially appealing on paper for mainland-China buyers who want extensive dock automation, hard-floor mopping, and dedicated hair-management features. Pet owners and households with long hair may particularly value the brush design, although independent testing would be needed to confirm how well it performs in practice.
It may also suit homes where manual mop washing and tank emptying are inconvenient—provided the plumbing-connected dock can be installed safely. Renters and homes without nearby water and drainage should favor the tank version or a different model.

- Effectively captures fine dust and particles during self‑cleaning cycles
- Maintains strong suction performance and stable base station operation
- Made with high‑density materials for extended service life
- Easy to install and replace as part of regular maintenance
- Designed for reliable Compatible for Narwal Freo X10 Pro / J5 Max
For US buyers, a current officially sold Narwal model is generally the more rational comparison point. Narwal’s US comparison page lists claims such as 22,000Pa suction and recognition of more than 200 objects for the Freo Z10 Ultra, and 18,000Pa suction with track-style mopping for the Narwal Flow. These are current product-page claims, not independent test results, but they illustrate why a region-compatible model may offer a better ownership proposition than importing the J5 Max.
See Narwal’s US product comparison for current positioning and the official US storefront for live availability.
Questions still worth checking before purchase
The launch reports do not establish detailed carpet behavior, mop-lifting height, carpet-recognition accuracy, or whether the J5 Max reliably avoids wetting every carpet type. Buyers with mixed flooring should confirm those details in the exact regional manual.
It is also sensible to test or investigate performance around cables, dark objects, reflective surfaces, pet mess, low lighting, and cluttered furniture rather than assuming that the “AI” label covers every household hazard. Independent cleaning and navigation tests are needed before treating the advertised suction, object count, runtime, or mopping pressure as real-world guarantees.

Verdict
The Narwal J5 Max is a substantial mainland-China launch on paper, combining an advertised 18,500Pa maximum, AI vision-based obstacle recognition, strong mopping specifications, and a choice between tank and plumbed docks. It is worth investigating for eligible China-market buyers who can obtain local service and consumables.
For most US shoppers, however, regional compatibility and after-sales support are more decisive than suction power. Unless Narwal officially sells and supports a region-compatible J5 Max, a current US-market model is the safer purchase than a gray-market import.
