The best modern electric stove depends on your kitchen, cookware and cooking habits—not a universal winner. For most buyers, the key choice is between an induction range, which heats compatible pans directly, and a radiant smooth-top range, which works with a broader range of cookware. Before comparing features, confirm the appliance will fit and your electrical service meets the specific model’s installation requirements.
Here, “stove” means an electric range: a combined oven and cooktop. A standalone cooktop is a different appliance.
Which type of electric range should you choose?
Electric ranges generally use induction, radiant elements beneath a smooth glass-ceramic surface, or exposed electric coils. These are category-level distinctions; performance and features vary by model.
| Type | How it heats | Why choose it | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Induction | Electromagnetic energy heats compatible cookware directly. | Can heat quickly and provide precise temperature control. The cooking surface is not heated by the element in the same way when no pan is present. | Requires compatible magnetic cookware. Check zone layout, controls, dimensions and the model’s electrical requirements. |
| Radiant smooth-top | Electric elements heat cookware through a glass-ceramic surface. | Smooth surface is easier to clean than exposed coils and works with a broad range of cookware. Consumer Reports describes smooth-top ranges as often less costly than induction. | The surface can remain hot and may be scratched or cracked. Handle cookware carefully and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. |
| Exposed-coil | Electric heating coils directly heat cookware. | A conventional option that accommodates varied cookware shapes. | Coils and drip areas have more crevices to clean than a smooth top. Consider whether the simpler surface and feature set suit your kitchen. |
ENERGY STAR says induction offers quicker heat-up times and more precise temperature control than gas, radiant or coil cooking. Consumer Reports says electric ranges tend to boil water faster and often bake more evenly than gas ranges; these are general comparisons, not guarantees for every appliance.

Will your cookware work with induction?
Check before choosing induction or buying new pans. ENERGY STAR says cast iron, stainless steel and enameled cast iron may work. Its simple test: hold a refrigerator magnet to the bottom of a pan. If it sticks, the pan will work with induction.
Pan compatibility is only one part of the decision: compare the size and arrangement of the cooking zones with the pans you actually use. ENERGY STAR’s eligible-product listings include details such as zone count, wattage, specialty zones and features.

Measure the space and choose the range format
Measure the opening and available clearances before shopping. Compare the existing range’s format—freestanding or slide-in—with the replacement. Whirlpool describes slide-in designs as sitting flush with countertops; freestanding ranges can occupy a separate position. Confirm dimensions and installation requirements in the specific model’s documentation rather than relying on a category label.
For context, ENERGY STAR says most cooking tops are 30–36 inches wide and most ovens in electric ranges hold 5–6 cubic feet. Those are typical ranges, not guarantees for an individual appliance. A product listing or installation guide is the authority for a model’s actual dimensions and capacity.

Match the cooking zones and oven to how you cook
Cooktop zones
Compare zone count and sizes with your usual pans. Depending on the model, useful features may include dual or concentric elements, bridge zones, warming zones and different control layouts. A feature is valuable when it fits your cookware and routine, not simply because it appears on the spec sheet.
Oven capacity and functions
Once fit and cooktop technology are settled, compare oven capacity and the functions you will use. Models vary in single- versus double-oven layout, convection, cleaning modes, air-fry functions and connected features. Whirlpool’s comparison chart illustrates this variation; check the specifications for each candidate rather than assuming a feature is standard across electric ranges.

Verify the circuit and installation requirements
Do not assume an existing outlet or circuit is suitable for a new range. Whirlpool’s general guidance says electric ranges typically use a 220- or 250-volt, 40- to 50-amp receptacle, but the exact requirement is model-specific and local codes matter. Check the chosen appliance’s installation specifications and have the electrical setup assessed as needed before ordering or installation.

ENERGY STAR certification applies to qualifying models, not to every electric range. Its residential criteria cover eligible ranges and standalone or portable cooktops; use the product finder and the specific model listing to verify certification and compare installation type, technology, dimensions, controls, features and energy data.
ENERGY STAR says certified electric cooking products are 18% more efficient on average than standard models; the page does not state a year for this figure. It is not a promise of household bill savings or a claim about every range. The same page reports that induction transfers about 85% of heating energy to cookware, compared with about a third for gas cooking products; ENERGY STAR attributes this comparison to Frontier Energy, July 2019. That is a heat-transfer comparison, not a measurement of whole-range efficiency.

A practical shortlist before you buy
- Measure the available space and clearances; identify whether your current range is freestanding or slide-in.
- Choose induction if faster heating and precise control matter and your cookware passes the magnet test—or you are willing to replace incompatible pans.
- Choose radiant smooth-top if easier surface cleanup and broad cookware compatibility are higher priorities; consider coil if familiarity and a simpler feature set matter more.
- Compare cooking-zone sizes and layout with the pans you use, then select oven capacity and functions around your cooking needs.
- Check the exact model’s installation document, circuit requirements and ENERGY STAR status, if certification matters to you.
Consumer Reports’ September 2, 2026 roundup identifies the Frigidaire Gallery GCFE3060BF as a smoothtop example, but the available model-level information does not establish it as a best-overall choice. A reliable ranked recommendation requires comparable model-specific performance evidence and current specifications.
