For dry concrete blocks, choose close-fitting gloves that suit the blocks’ sharp or rough edges while allowing a secure grip and enough dexterity. If wet cement or mortar may contact your skin, treat that as a separate chemical hazard: OSHA says butyl or nitrile gloves are frequently recommended for caustic Portland cement, but the right choice depends on the cement product and conditions. No single glove is proven best for every block-handling task.
Choose gloves for the hazards in the task
Block handling can expose hands to cuts and abrasions from sharp edges. Wet cement creates a different risk: Portland cement is caustic and can injure skin, especially if it remains trapped against the body. A glove suited to rough edges should not automatically be assumed to protect against cement, and chemical-resistant labeling alone does not establish suitability for every exposure.
OSHA advises selecting gloves according to the specific physical or chemical hazard, exposure duration, work conditions, and dexterity required. Its hand-protection guidance states that no gloves protect against all potential hand hazards. See OSHA’s hand-protection standard and OSHA’s interpretation on gloves for masons.
Match protection to the work condition
| Work condition | What to assess | Selection guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Dry block handling | Are edges sharp or rough? What grip and dexterity are needed? | Consider gloves suited to the cut and abrasion risks, and check the maker’s performance information and fit. UK HSE identifies cuts and abrasions from sharp block edges as relevant hazards. See HSE guidance on handling blocks and masonry units. |
| Wet mortar or cement may contact skin | Could cement enter the glove, soak through, or remain against the skin? | Choose protection for the actual cement product and exposure. OSHA says butyl or nitrile gloves are frequently recommended for caustic Portland cement, and advises consulting the glove supplier or cement manufacturer’s safety information. See OSHA’s Portland cement skin-protection guidance. |
| Both physical handling and wet cement exposure | Can the glove address both hazards while maintaining safe grip and dexterity? | Check the manufacturer’s data for each expected hazard. Do not infer that protection against one hazard means protection against the other. |
These are selection principles, not the results of a comparative glove test. No specific model has been established as best for all block work.

Fit, use, and care
- Choose a close, practical fit. OSHA warns that loose gloves can let cement enter.
- Keep the inside of gloves clean and dry. Wash and dry hands before putting gloves on and whenever removing them; do not let wet cement remain trapped against skin.
- For reusable gloves, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Discard gloves that are worn out or grossly contaminated.
- Check product information against the specific chemical, exposure, and work conditions. A broad label such as “chemical resistant” is not proof of protection in every situation.
OSHA covers glove fit, use, and care in Preventing Skin Problems from Working with Portland Cement and discusses hazard-based selection in 1910 Subpart I Appendix B.
Gloves do not solve the manual-handling problem
Repeated handling and awkward posture can contribute to strains, particularly when blocks are heavy. Gloves address hand protection; they do not replace suitable handling methods or mechanical aids when those are needed. HSE’s block and masonry guidance discusses both hand hazards and manual-handling risks.

What OSHA requires—and what it does not
OSHA’s February 2, 2010 interpretation says there is no specific standard requiring gloves for every mason or every masonry task. Construction PPE requirements apply when a hazard capable of injuring the hands is present; some masonry tasks may not involve significant skin contact or another hand hazard. This is a U.S. federal OSHA interpretation, not a blanket rule for every jurisdiction; applicable workplace requirements depend on the task and governing rules. OSHA’s construction PPE guidance reports that the fit-related revision to 29 CFR 1926.95 took effect on January 13, 2025.
