For a wall scanner that detects metal alongside wood substructures and live cables, consider the Bosch GMS120-27. If your priority is locating metal across surfaces such as drywall, tile, plaster, or concrete, the Zircon MetalliScanner m40 is the more focused option. These are different tools for different jobs—not a tested overall ranking—and neither can prove that a drilling spot is safe.
Choose by what you need to find
Before drilling or fastening, identify the target: metal pipe or rebar, a wood substructure, or a potentially live cable. A metal detector can help locate metal, but it does not provide the same coverage as a scanner that also indicates wood and live cables.
| Scanner | Documented target coverage | Manufacturer-stated depth | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bosch GMS120-27 | Metals, wood substructures and live cables behind drywall, according to Bosch. | Bosch Professional lists maxima of 100 mm for magnetic metal, 120 mm for non-magnetic metal, 50 mm for live cables and 30 mm for wooden substructures. Bosch’s US page gives target-specific figures of 4 in for ferrous steel, up to 4-3/4 in for non-ferrous copper and up to 2 in for copper wiring. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. | Someone who wants metal detection plus indications for wood and live cables. |
| Zircon MetalliScanner m40 | Metal in wood, drywall, paneling, tile, plaster, concrete and other non-metallic surfaces, according to Zircon. | Up to 4 in (102 mm) for a 1/2-in rebar target and 2 in (51 mm) for a 1/2-in copper-pipe target. Zircon specifies these as first-light depths. | Someone prioritizing metal detection across varied non-metallic surfaces. |
The depth figures are not a controlled head-to-head comparison: the manufacturers specify different targets and conditions. Actual results depend on the wall and the object being located.
What the Bosch GMS120-27 is designed to do
Bosch describes the GMS120-27 as detecting metals, wood substructures and live wires behind drywall. The different maximum depths apply to different target types: Bosch Professional lists 100 mm for magnetic metal, 120 mm for non-magnetic metal, 50 mm for live cables and 30 mm for wooden substructures. Bosch’s US page presents its figures using ferrous steel, non-ferrous copper and copper wiring instead. Check the product page for your region and the exact variant rather than treating the two presentations as identical.

What the Zircon MetalliScanner m40 is designed to do
The m40 focuses on finding metal. Zircon lists drywall, wood, paneling, tile, plaster, concrete and other non-metallic surfaces as suitable materials. It offers two scan positions:
Rank #2
- ACCURATE: More sensors = More accuracy. Conventional electronic stud finders have 1 or 2 sensors. The ProSensor M210 has 13, making it the best stud finder on the market
- EASY: No calibration is required. Simply press and hold the button to begin scanning. Unlike other wall stud finders that give false readings, the ProSensor M210 lets you start scanning anywhere, even over a stud
- SHOWS FULL WIDTH OF STUDS: Unlike magnetic stud finders that only find screws, the ProSensor M210 detects the full width of studs. The LED display shows the whole stud and double studs, and the middle LED will turn green to indicate stud centers
- DEEP SCAN ALWAYS ON: The ProSensor M210 stud finder for drywall has deep detection of up to 1.7 in and finds both wood and metal studs
- EXTRA FEATURES: The ProSensor M210 stud finder has a built-in bubble level, live wire detection, and convenient pencil caddy. Two AA batteries required, not included. Compatible with rechargeable batteries
- Wide Scan: for metal in walls or concrete.
- Pinpoint Scan: for small metal objects such as screws and nails.
Zircon’s first-light depth specifications are up to 4 in (102 mm) for a 1/2-in rebar target and 2 in (51 mm) for a 1/2-in copper-pipe target. These figures describe those specified targets; they are not a guarantee of detection at that depth in every wall.
The m40 requires a 9 V alkaline battery, which Zircon says is not included. Zircon describes the device as splash- and water-resistant, not waterproof.

Account for wall conditions and scanner limits
A reading depends on more than the scanner model. Zircon says sensing depth and accuracy can vary with mineral content, moisture, texture and consistency. Bosch warns that its scanner may fail to detect cables behind metallic foil, in damp walls above 50% humidity, or inside an empty metal pipe; its support information also gives a separate caveat for solid-wire cables.
- Do not assume a negative reading means the path is clear. The target, wall construction and environmental conditions can affect detection.
- Do not treat a positive reading as a precise map of the object or its full route.
- When a drilling location matters, use appropriate precautions and do not rely on a scanner alone to establish safety.
Make the choice for your inspection
- Choose the Bosch GMS120-27 if you want one scanner with manufacturer-documented detection for metal, wood substructures and live cables behind drywall.
- Choose the Zircon m40 if your priority is metal detection on varied non-metallic surfaces and you value separate wide and pinpoint scan positions.
The available product documentation establishes capabilities and manufacturer-stated depths, not which scanner performs better in a direct comparison. Current prices and retailer availability are not established here, so compare the exact model and included accessories when shopping.
Quick Recap

- TIPS: 1. Calibration is necessary before using the stud finder function. 2. Laser level is manual-leveling, not self-leveling, please use the two bubble vials for accurate horizontal, vertical and cross lines. 3. Two bubble vials only work and light up when the Laser Mode is active, not in the detection mode. 4. Self-adhesive strips are not suitable for dusty, coarse surfaces, wallpaper, or drywalls, etc. Replace the strips if they are dirty or not sticky. 5. Class II laser safety product, output < 1mW. 6. Note: NOT designed for use on LATH and PLASTER WALLS. Works best on DRYWALL and WOOD WALLS
- Keep pressing the red detection button on the left side throughout the scanning process
- One Tool for Two Jobs: This multifunctional tool combines a rechargeable stud finder and line laser level, offering two essential functions in one compact device. PACKAGE:1 × Rechargeable PREXISO 2-in-1 Stud Finder with Laser Level, 1 × Type-C Charging Cable, 1 × 360° Wall Mount with 2 Pins, 6 × Self-Adhesive Strips, 1 × Portable Storage Bag and 1 × User Manual
- Easy & Automatic Edge Marking: In the Stud Finder Mode, the device will auto-project the upper vertical laser line when the stud edge is found. At the same time, the top LED lights turn red and an audio alert sounds, providing visual and audible guidance for easy and precise edge marking. Repeat the same actions from the left or right side to get the exact location of the stud
- Multi-Surface Laser Level: It's a manual-leveling laser level, not self-leveling. The two lighted bubble vials help you manually align horizontal, vertical or cross-lines only when the backside of the device is flat against the wall or floor, and the bubbles are centered. And LED bubble vials provide additional visibility in dark areas and enable a 180° visual reference. Laser working range typically up to 10m/30ft (indoor use)
