To choose a mattress that feels comfortable to you, start with your budget, room dimensions, who will share the bed, and your usual sleep position. Then compare construction and firmness as a shortlist—not as a guarantee—and read the trial, return, warranty, delivery, and foundation terms before buying. The right choice depends on your body and preferences; no firmness label or price can promise comfort.
Start with the practical fit
Set a total budget
Decide what you can spend before comparing models. Include the mattress size you need and any associated bedding or pillow costs. Sleep Foundation’s shopping guide gives broad price context: mattresses start around $300 and can reach $4,000 or more, with approximate ranges that vary by type. Those are guide figures, not a verified 2026 market average. Sleep Foundation’s mattress shopping guide can help frame the comparison.
Measure the room and account for sleepers
Check the available floor space and the mattress dimensions, then consider how many people will sleep on it, each sleeper’s height, and preferred sleeping position. A mattress that suits one person may not provide enough room for two; make sure the size you compare is the size you intend to buy, since total prices change by size. Sleep Foundation’s online buying guide recommends checking the space and purchase details before ordering.
Use sleep position and pressure points to shortlist firmness
Firmness is personal. Body weight, sleep position, pressure at the shoulders and hips, and individual preference all affect how a mattress feels. Labels such as “medium” or “firm” are not perfectly scientific and can vary by brand and model, so treat any chart as a starting point rather than a promise. Sleep Foundation uses a 1–10 scale, but likewise cautions that firmness is not an exact standard. Its mattress selection guide offers general position-based guidance:
#1 Best Overall
- Pressure Relief Memory Foam: This full mattress uses patented premium memory foam material that provides balanced support while effectively absorbing and evenly distributing body pressure. It greatly alleviating the reaction force on body and relaxing muscles. The stress on joints in contact with the mattress is minimized, which will not add burden to the body while asleep.
- Suitable Support for Everyone and All Sleep Positions: Matress of EGOHOME has a high degree of fit with body curve, it will deform with changes in sleeping posture, filling the gap between your body and the mattress, advantage for your spine and promoting smooth blood circulation throughout the body. It also reduces the noise interference caused by turning over, effectively promotes perfect deep sleep.
- Refreshing Cool Sensation: The process we use makes the mattress have a special bubble hole structure, which has good breathable airflow to keep a peaceful sleep. We also infuse it with pure natural green tea gel, which helps regulate body temperature and keeps body cool and fresh.
- Stable and Reliable Quality: The internal molecular structure of the memory foam used in this full mattress is extremely stable, resulting in minimal variation in firmness across different temperatures and humidities. The mattress consistently maintains an optimal balance of softness and firmness, allowing you to enjoy the comfort of memory foam throughout the year.
- Globally Diversified Origins: Our products are backed by a stable and highly diversified supply chain, with sourcing origins spanning the United States, Laos, Indonesia, and other countries.
- Side sleepers: Medium-soft to medium-firm is a useful initial range. Lighter side sleepers may prefer a softer feel; check that the mattress eases pressure at the shoulders and hips while helping keep the head and neck aligned.
- Back sleepers: Medium-firm to firm is a reasonable place to start. Consider whether the surface feels supportive without creating uncomfortable pressure.
- Stomach sleepers: Firm is a common starting point. Body weight and preference can still change what feels comfortable.
These are broad recommendations, not medical advice or a guarantee of spinal alignment. A firmer mattress is not automatically more supportive for every person, and the evidence here does not establish that a particular firmness treats or prevents back pain. Sleep Foundation quotes board-certified sleep medicine physician Lulu Guo, MD: “Good sleep posture and spinal alignment help avoid strain, maintain comfort and support your body’s natural curvature to help with long-term spinal health.”
Compare constructions by their tradeoffs
Construction affects feel, responsiveness, temperature, motion transfer, and price. The tendencies below describe broad categories, not every mattress within them. Sleep Foundation’s 2026 roundup describes these tradeoffs in its mattress guide.
Rank #2
- COOLING COMFORT AT A GREAT VALUE – Cooling Gel Memory Foam pulls heat away from your body while a breathable cover promotes airflow throughout the night. Quality cooling comfort at a price that works for you.
- PRESSURE RELIEF WHERE YOU NEED IT MOST – Memory foam contours to your body to cushion pressure points at the shoulders, hips, and joints while absorbing motion across the surface. Sleep comfortably, even if your partner tosses and turns.
- THE PERFECT BALANCE OF COMFORT AND SUPPORT – Designed with a versatile medium feel, this mattress cushions without sinking and supports without feeling firm. Ideal for side, back, and combination sleepers alike.
- FIBERGLASS FREE FOR PEACE OF MIND – No fiberglass anywhere in the construction. Instead, a carbon-rayon flame barrier provides dependable fire protection using certified safe materials you can feel good about bringing home.
- CERTIFIED SAFE MATERIALS – Crafted with CertiPUR-US certified foam and an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified cover. Independently tested and made without harmful chemicals for safer, healthier sleep.
| Construction | Common feel and strengths | Tradeoffs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Foam | Contouring, pressure relief, and motion isolation. | May retain heat and may have lower durability, depending on the mattress. |
| Innerspring | Bouncy, responsive, breathable, and supportive. | May feel too firm for some sleepers. |
| Hybrid | Combines coils with comfort layers, often balancing contouring and support. | Can cost more than some alternatives. |
| Latex | Often springy, breathable, and durable. | Often costs more. |
Do not choose by category name alone: compare the actual model’s feel, temperature, motion response, price for your size, and seller policies. Sleep Foundation says its Seattle Test Lab team uses hands-on tests across nine weighted performance categories and has tested over 2,000 mattresses over the last seven years. That is the guide’s disclosed process, not an independent guarantee that a particular bed will suit you.
Read the trial and purchase terms before ordering
An online trial can let you try a mattress in your own sleeping environment longer than a brief showroom visit, but policies vary by seller and model. Read the actual terms rather than relying on a headline trial length. Psychologist and sleep wellness consultant Sarah Silverman, Psy.D., advises: “When it comes to sleep, everyone’s comfort preferences are different…I recommend investing in an option with a good return policy, so you can try it out for at least a month or so to decide whether it’s comfortable for you.”

- Confirm the minimum trial period and when it starts.
- Check return shipping or fees and whether the seller arranges pickup.
- Read warranty coverage and exclusions, including required foundation or support-base conditions.
- Confirm delivery details and whether the mattress must decompress after arrival. Sleep Foundation notes that some foam mattresses shipped in a box may take hours to decompress and up to 48 hours to reach full loft; this is a possibility, not a universal timetable.
- Verify that the seller is authorized if the manufacturer’s warranty depends on buying through an authorized seller.

In the United States, mattress flammability compliance is a safety requirement, not a comfort rating. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says products subject to 16 C.F.R. part 1632 must pass a cigarette ignition test with a char length no more than 2 inches (5.1 cm) from the cigarette’s nearest point. Compliance does not certify comfort, durability, or health benefits. See the CPSC mattress FAQ.
