1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor tough linesman-plier work, choose by the wire you need to cut, the reach you need, and the features your job actually uses—not by an unsupported “best overall” ranking. Among the models compared here, KNIPEX 09 11 240 has the clearest published cutting capacities: 1/8-inch hard wire and 3/16-inch medium-hard wire. Milwaukee’s MT500 is the option with a specified conduit reaming head, while the 8-inch CHANNELLOCK 348 and 7-inch Klein J20017NE offer shorter alternatives.
These are manufacturer specifications, not results from independent, side-by-side testing. The makers’ leverage and construction descriptions can help narrow a choice, but they do not establish which tool cuts easiest or lasts longest.
How to choose linesman pliers for demanding work
Linesman’s pliers—also commonly spelled “lineman’s pliers”—combine jaws for gripping, pulling and twisting with cutting edges for wire. For heavy use, match the tool to the material and diameter you cut, then consider length, grip and any job-specific extras.
- Check the cutting specification. A capacity for one wire type does not automatically apply to another. Verify the maker’s rating for the material and diameter in your work.
- Choose length for access and reach. The models below range from 7 to 9½ inches. A longer tool may provide reach, while a shorter one may suit tighter access; hand comfort and the task matter too.
- Treat leverage claims as design information, not a common score. Manufacturers describe leverage differently, and the claims here were not measured using one shared test method.
- Pay for extras only if they serve your work. A fish-tape puller, crimper, conduit reamer or tether point can be useful on the right job, but none is a substitute for the capacity and jaw design you need.
Compare the published models
| Model | Length and published weight | Cutting information | Construction and grip details | Job-specific features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KNIPEX 09 11 240 | 9½ inches; 0.905 lb, according to KNIPEX’s current product listing accessed 2026-10-08. | KNIPEX lists 1/8-inch hard-wire capacity and 3/16-inch medium-hard-wire (nail) capacity. | Forged, multi-stage oil-hardened vanadium steel, according to KNIPEX. | Fish-tape puller and crimper. See KNIPEX’s 09 11 240 product listing. |
| Milwaukee MT500 | 9.22 inches and 1.02 lb, according to Milwaukee Tool’s current product listing accessed 2026-10-08. | Cutting capacity: not stated in the cited product details. | Forged steel; laser-hardened edges and teeth, according to Milwaukee. | Reaming head for ½- to 1-inch conduit, fish-tape puller and tether-ready design. Milwaukee states a lifetime guarantee. See Milwaukee’s MT500 listing. |
| CHANNELLOCK 348 | 8 inches, according to CHANNELLOCK’s product category. | Cutting capacity: not stated in the cited product details. | Forged high-carbon U.S. steel, crosshatch teeth and laser heat-treated cutting edges; CHANNELLOCK describes its design as XLT leverage. See CHANNELLOCK’s combination lineman’s pliers listing. | No crimper, fish-tape puller, conduit reamer or tether point is specified in the cited details. |
| Klein J20017NE | 7 inches, according to Klein Tools. | Cutting capacity: not stated in the cited product details. | High-leverage streamline design and cross-hatched knurled jaws; Klein says it is forged in the USA from custom U.S.-made tool steel. See Klein’s J20017NE listing. | No crimper, fish-tape puller, conduit reamer or tether point is specified in the cited details. |
“Not stated” means the cited product information does not establish a comparable value; it is not evidence that a tool cannot perform that task. Confirm the current specification with the manufacturer before relying on a tool for a particular cut.

Which model fits which job?
For cuts where a published capacity matters: KNIPEX 09 11 240
This is the most fully specified option in the comparison: KNIPEX publishes capacities for hard wire and medium-hard wire, plus length and weight. Check that the wire in your job matches the listed type and diameter; do not extend those figures to other materials or models. The integrated fish-tape puller and crimper are useful only if you need those functions.
For repeated conduit work: Milwaukee MT500
Milwaukee specifies a reaming head for ½- to 1-inch conduit. That makes the feature relevant for work that includes reaming within that range. The listing also names a fish-tape puller and tether-ready design, but does not provide a cutting capacity in the cited details.

- Pliers with high-leverage design for 46-Percent greater cutting and gripping power than other plier designs
- Hot-riveted joint ensures smooth action and no handle wobble
- Precision machined knives cut cleanly and crisply even on fine stranded wire, mule tape and pull line
- Streamlined design with sure-gripping, cross-hatched knurled jaws
- Made in USA with Custom, US-made tool steel
For a shorter tool: CHANNELLOCK 348 or Klein J20017NE
The CHANNELLOCK 348 is 8 inches; the Klein J20017NE is 7 inches. Consider these when a shorter tool better suits access or handling. Their listed leverage and jaw or cutter features are manufacturer descriptions, not proof of a particular cutting advantage over the longer models.
When an insulated version is appropriate
If you need an insulated tool, compare the specific insulated model rather than assuming an ordinary version has the same protection. KNIPEX identifies the 09 08 240 US as 1000V insulated and ASTM-tested in its catalog; CHANNELLOCK describes the 348I as having a 1000V-rated grip. See the KNIPEX 09 08 240 US listing, CHANNELLOCK 348I listing and CHANNELLOCK’s 2023 catalog.

The published details help identify length, listed capacities and integrated features. They do not establish comparative hand fatigue, long-term durability or which tool performs best in a controlled head-to-head test. Terms such as “high leverage,” XLT and laser-hardened describe maker-stated designs; they are not directly comparable performance measurements.

- High-Leverage Design: Designed with a forward-placed pivot point, these heavy-duty linemans pliers offer enhanced leverage, allowing you to cut or grip with 20% less effort than standard pliers
- Hardened Steel Construction: Made from high-carbon steel coated with black phosphate finish, these linesman pliers deliver superior strength and corrosion resistance
- Reinforced Jaws: The jaws of these side cutter pliers are reinforced and thickened to prevent cracking or deformation under heavy loads, which ensures longer tool life and consistent cutting performance
- Ergonomic Handles: The 2mm thick dip grip provides enhanced comfort & control, and reduced hand fatigue during long-time use
- Versatile Applications: These 8-inch linemans pliers offer multiple functions in one tool—firmly grip and twist wires, tighten or loosen nuts, and cleanly cut electrical cables, steel wire, and soft metals. Ideal for electricians, mechanics, and DIY users
For any demanding cut, confirm the exact conductor material and diameter against the chosen model’s current manufacturer specification. Where no capacity is published in the cited listing, do not assume the tool is suitable for a particular wire based on another model’s rating.
