Foam, latex and hybrid mattresses can all work on slats, but there is no universal spacing rule. Measure your frame, then check the mattress model’s current specifications and warranty before buying or using it.
Can you use a mattress on a slatted bed?
Usually, yes. A sturdy slatted base can support many memory foam, latex and hybrid mattresses. The important conditions are that the slats and frame can carry the combined load of the mattress and sleepers, and that the gaps meet the mattress maker’s requirements. Excessively wide gaps can leave parts of a mattress unsupported and contribute to sagging. Sleep Foundation’s guide to box springs and slats also notes that some warranties specify the type of base required.
“Slatted bed” can describe different constructions, from rigid wooden slats fixed to a frame to flexible, bowed slats. Don’t assume that a mattress approved for one style is approved for every platform bed. Check the maker’s guidance for the exact mattress and the base you have.
How far apart should bed slats be?
Follow the mattress manufacturer’s limit for the specific model. Published recommendations differ: Tempur-Pedic’s U.S. support guidance says slats should be at least 3 inches wide and no more than 4 inches apart; Casper recommends flat wooden slats no more than 4 inches apart; Helix recommends firm, thick slats no more than 5.5 inches apart. These are brand-specific directions, not interchangeable universal standards.

| Manufacturer or source | Published guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Tempur-Pedic | Slats at least 3 inches wide and no more than 4 inches apart | U.S. customer support guidance; also requires a structurally sound frame able to support the mattress and occupants. Tempur-Pedic support |
| Casper | Flat wooden slats, no more than 4 inches apart | Casper FAQ guidance; check the current instructions for the mattress model. Casper FAQ |
| Helix | Firm, thick slats no more than 5.5 inches apart | Helix support guidance; check current model instructions and warranty. Helix support |
Measure the open gap between adjacent slats—not the distance from the center of one slat to the center of the next—and compare it with the exact mattress instructions. If the manufacturer specifies both slat width and maximum gap, meet both requirements.
What else should you check on the frame?
- Condition: Look for cracked, loose, bowed or missing slats and damaged frame joints. Repair or replace compromised parts before placing a mattress on the frame.
- Support: Confirm the frame has any center rail, legs or other reinforcement required for its size and load. Slat spacing alone does not prove that the frame is structurally adequate.
- Shape and material: Some brands specify flat wooden slats. A bowed or flexible design may not meet that instruction, even if its gaps seem small.
- Mattress and occupant load: The frame must support the mattress and the people using it, within the frame maker’s stated limits.
Sleep Foundation’s mattress-care guidance discusses the importance of an appropriate, supportive base. If your frame’s capacity or required reinforcement is unclear, check its manufacturer’s instructions rather than relying on appearance alone.

Will a slatted base void your mattress warranty?
Not automatically. Warranty eligibility depends on the mattress maker’s requirements and whether your base meets them. A warranty may exclude damage or sagging associated with inadequate support, so check the terms for the exact model before using a frame that falls outside the stated limits.
Tempur-Pedic warns that a base that does not meet its requirements can affect coverage. Helix likewise warns that overly wide gaps may lead to sagging or affect warranty coverage. Those statements apply to their products; they do not establish a universal rule for every mattress.

Should you add a bunkie board or support panel?
Only if the mattress manufacturer approves that solution for your model. A board can create a more continuous support surface, and Helix describes a bunkie board as a possible option for an existing frame with gaps wider than 4–5 inches. But Tempur-Pedic cautions that bunkie boards may void its warranty. The brands’ guidance conflicts, so don’t treat a board as a universally safe fix: confirm approval and any conditions directly with the mattress maker before adding one.

How to choose a mattress for your slatted bed
- Identify the mattress model. Find its current base or foundation requirements and warranty terms. If you are comparing mattresses, ask each manufacturer about the exact frame you plan to use.
- Measure the bed frame. Record the gap between slats and, where relevant, their width. Note whether they are flat or bowed and whether the frame has center support.
- Check compatibility before comparing feel. Eliminate mattresses whose stated requirements your frame does not meet, or resolve the frame issue using a solution approved by the manufacturer.
- Choose for comfort and practical fit. Foam, latex, hybrid and innerspring designs feel different; compatibility with slats does not establish which one will feel comfortable to you. Consider mattress height and the airflow and overall height of the base as well.
- Keep the specifications. Save the manufacturer’s base instructions and warranty with your purchase information so you can refer to the requirements if a warranty question arises.
Quick compatibility checklist
- The mattress maker allows the specific kind of slatted base you own.
- The slat gap and width meet the exact model’s requirements.
- The slats, frame and any required center support are sound and adequately rated.
- The warranty does not require a different foundation or impose conditions your setup fails to meet.
- Any support board or panel you plan to add is explicitly permitted for that mattress.
