Check the product’s current package and your washer manual before use.
What are “pads for washing”?
The phrase can mean different things, but this guide uses it to mean laundry detergent sheets: thin, premeasured detergent products used in a washing machine. They are not dryer sheets. Because directions vary by product and washer type, use the instructions on the package rather than assuming all detergent sheets work the same way.
How to choose laundry detergent sheets
Match the dose to the load
Check the label for directions based on load size and soil level. For example, Seventh Generation’s Free & Clear page recommends different amounts for small or medium, large, and extra-large or heavily soiled loads. Those doses apply to that product, not to detergent sheets as a category.
Check placement and washer compatibility
Some brands direct users to put a sheet in the drum rather than the detergent drawer, and placement advice can differ for front- and top-load washers. Follow the sheet manufacturer’s directions alongside the washing-machine manufacturer’s instructions. Seventh Generation says its Free & Clear sheets are compatible with HE machines and should go into the empty drum before clothes are added. Those are manufacturer claims for that product.

Consider temperature and fragrance
Seventh Generation says its Free & Clear sheets dissolve in cold water. Do not assume the same claim applies to every product; check the label for the sheets you buy. If you prefer to avoid added fragrance, compare a fragrance-free product with scented versions and review the current ingredient information. A listed fragrance ingredient is information to consider, not by itself a medical safety assessment.
Example: Seventh Generation Free & Clear
The manufacturer’s product page lists a 32-sheet package and ingredients including sodium lauryl sulfate, polyvinyl alcohol, laureth-6, glycerin, sodium citrate, phenoxyethanol, and a protease enzyme blend. It instructs users to place a sheet in the empty washer drum, then add clothes and follow garment care labels. The page recommends:

Scented alternative
Seventh Generation also lists a Fresh Lavender variant. Its product page identifies lavender and other essential-oil ingredients and lists fragrance allergens including linalool, linalyl acetate, limonene, citronellol, camphor, and geraniol. How to use detergent sheets
- Read both sets of instructions. Check the detergent-sheet package and the washer manual, including any instructions for your machine type.
- Measure the load and soil level. Use the brand’s stated dose for that load; do not transfer another product’s dosing directions.
- Place the sheet as directed. For Seventh Generation Free & Clear, the manufacturer says to put it in the empty drum before loading clothes. Other products may specify different placement. Sheets Laundry Club also advises following the washer manufacturer’s instructions and gives placement guidance that varies between front- and top-loaders: Sheets Laundry Club usage guidance.
- Follow garment care labels. Use the wash settings suitable for the clothes. If cold-water use matters, confirm that the specific detergent-sheet product says it is suitable for cold water.
As another example of brand-specific directions, iZi-Wash says to place its sheet in the drum rather than the detergent drawer and describes dosing based on load size and soil level: iZi-Wash laundry detergent sheets. That illustrates variation in directions; it does not establish that one brand cleans better than another.
What the available product information can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer and support pages establish what those brands say about their own products. They do not provide an independent comparison of cleaning performance or value, or establish that detergent sheets are categorically safer or environmentally superior to liquid or powdered detergents. Choose based on the current label, your washer’s instructions, and your preferences rather than treating marketing claims as comparative test results.
