The best detergent for underwear depends on what you’re washing: everyday underwear, delicate lingerie, or reusable period underwear. Choose a product whose intended use and washing directions fit the garment, then follow the care label; the product examples below are manufacturer-described options, not independently ranked winners.
How to choose detergent for underwear
- Start with the care label. Check whether the underwear permits machine washing, specifies a temperature, or requires handwashing. A detergent’s directions do not override the garment’s instructions.
- Match the formula to the garment. Lingerie and fine fabrics may call for a delicate-wash product, while period-underwear detergents are marketed for that specific use. Enzyme and bleach content varies, so check the individual product information if those ingredients matter to you.
- Consider fragrance preferences. “Fragrance-free” and sensitive-skin descriptions are brand claims, not guarantees that a product will suit every wearer. Check the ingredient list, particularly if you prefer to avoid fragrance.
- Use the product’s own dose. Concentration and directions differ between detergents. Do not transfer one brand’s dose to another.

The manufacturer pages below describe different use cases and formulas. They do not establish which detergent cleans best in a direct comparison.

Choosing by garment and washing method
Everyday underwear
Use the care label to determine whether machine washing and your preferred temperature are suitable. The products listed here are positioned for delicates, lingerie, fine fabrics, or period underwear; their descriptions do not establish a single best choice for every everyday garment.
Lingerie and delicate fabrics
For lace, silk, satin, or other delicate items, choose a detergent whose stated use includes that type of fabric and follow its directions alongside the garment label. Persil’s UK page describes its product for lingerie and low-temperature washing. Bondi Wash specifically names lace, silk, and satin and recommends a mesh bag for machine washing. The Laundress recommends cold water and a delicate or wool cycle where appropriate.

Reusable period underwear
Saalt markets its detergent specifically for period underwear and describes its formula as enzyme-powered. Its page provides separate amounts for a full machine load and a small hand-washed load. Do not assume another detergent’s concentration or dosing is interchangeable.
Handwashing versus machine washing
If the garment allows machine washing, use the cycle and temperature on its care label. For machine-washed delicates, the product directions may call for cold or delicate settings; Bondi Wash recommends a mesh bag. If handwashing is required or preferred, use the chosen detergent’s stated amount and rinsing instructions. For example, Persil gives a hand-wash measure, while Bondi Wash describes a soak and says not to wring or twist. Directions are product-specific.

Enzymes, bleach, and fragrance: what the labels say
These products do not share one formula. Persil says its non-bio Silk and Wool wash contains no bleach or enzymes, and The Laundress describes its Delicate Wash as enzyme-free. By contrast, Bondi Wash lists protease, Saalt describes its period-underwear detergent as enzyme-powered, and Dirty Labs describes its delicates formula as enzyme-powered. Dirty Labs calls its product fragrance-free; Saalt’s ingredients include fragrance, and The Laundress lists fragrance allergens d-limonene and linalool.
Those are product descriptions and ingredient details, not a comparative test or a guarantee of how any wearer will respond. If a particular ingredient or fragrance is a concern, check the current package or product page before use.

Care-label and detergent checks before washing
- Read the garment’s care label and separate items that require different temperatures or methods.
- Check the detergent’s stated fabric use, ingredients, dose, and hand- or machine-washing instructions.
- For machine-washed delicates, choose only a cycle and temperature permitted by the garment label; use a mesh bag when the product directions recommend one.
- For handwashing, measure the selected detergent according to its own directions, then rinse as directed. Avoid wringing or twisting if the garment or detergent instructions advise against it.
- For colored delicate items, follow any colorfastness-testing advice on the detergent page and the garment’s care information.
