Before comparing features, check the exact model’s dimensions, door or lid clearance, delivery route, plumbing and electrical requirements, and whether your lease or building permits installation. Compact, stackable, under-counter, and all-in-one designs can all work in limited spaces, but none is automatically suitable for every apartment.
Which washer format fits a small apartment?
Start with the shape of the space and how you want to do laundry. ENERGY STAR lists stackable, under-counter, and combination designs among options that can fit smaller spaces. A compact washer may also be paired with a separate dryer, but the installation details vary by model.

For any format, compare stated capacity with the size of loads you normally wash. A small exterior footprint does not by itself show how much laundry a machine can handle.
Measure the space and check installation requirements
Measure the intended location before shopping, then compare those measurements with the exact manufacturer’s installation specifications. Include the area needed to use the appliance, connect it, and reach it for service—not just the washer’s listed width and depth. ENERGY STAR’s buying guide advises shoppers to consider placement and typical load size; it does not certify that a washer will fit a particular apartment.

- Access during use: Check front-door swing or top-lid clearance, room to load and unload laundry, and any required service access.
- Delivery route: Measure relevant doorways, hallways, stairs, elevators, and turns between the building entrance and installation location.
- Connections: Verify the exact model’s water supply, drain, electrical supply, and any dryer venting or condensate requirements.
- Building approval: Check your lease, building rules, and any applicable installation requirements before ordering. Do not assume every apartment permits an in-unit washer.
- Stacking: Confirm that the washer and dryer are an approved pairing and use the specified stacking kit; do not infer compatibility from similar dimensions.
ENERGY STAR recommends thinking about where the washer will go and whether you typically run small or large loads. Its washer buying guidance is U.S.-program information, not a substitute for the appliance maker’s instructions or local requirements.
What “compact” means—and what it does not
Compact is a capacity category, not a promise of one standard exterior size. ENERGY STAR’s 2025 Draft 1 Version 9 specification defines a compact residential clothes washer as having capacity under 1.6 cubic feet (45 L). That document is explicitly a draft, so its threshold should not be presented as a final specification.

ENERGY STAR’s published certification criteria state that eligible residential front- and top-loading washers must have capacity greater than 1.6 cubic feet to qualify. A washer below that threshold should not be assumed to carry ENERGY STAR certification. Check the exact model’s listing and label rather than inferring certification from the word “compact.”
How to compare water and energy use
Look at the yellow EnergyGuide label for estimated energy use and annual operating costs, as ENERGY STAR advises. For comparable models, a higher Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) indicates greater energy efficiency, while a lower Integrated Water Factor (IWF) indicates greater water efficiency. Use figures for the exact models and comparable configurations rather than treating a category average as an individual machine’s expected consumption.

ENERGY STAR says certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and 30% less water than regular washers. It reports 14 gallons per load for full-size certified washers compared with 20 gallons for a standard washer, and says certified front-load washers use about 45% less energy and 50% less water than top-load agitator washers. These are ENERGY STAR category comparisons; they are not guarantees for a particular compact model. The agency’s page does not state a publication year for these figures.
ENERGY STAR also cites about 300 loads per year for an average American family and about $530 in lifetime energy-cost savings for certified washers. The page does not state the year for these figures, and the lifetime-savings estimate should not be applied to a particular compact washer without checking its eligibility and the assumptions behind the estimate.

Plan for drying as a separate fit decision
If you want drying capacity, decide whether a separate dryer or an all-in-one machine better suits the room and your laundry routine. With an all-in-one, compare the stated wash capacity with drying capacity and review the complete cycle details for the exact model; one appliance footprint does not establish that washing and drying have identical capacity or timing.
A compact heat-pump dryer can be stacked with a compact washer and does not require a vent to the home exterior, according to ENERGY STAR. That can help where exterior venting is impractical, but it does not eliminate installation checks: the agency says these dryers need appropriate electricity and a water source, and condensate may be handled by a tank or drain arrangement. Confirm the manufacturer’s instructions and apartment permissions for the particular dryer.

A practical buying checklist
- Measure the space and delivery path. Record the location’s width, depth, height, access clearances, and relevant route dimensions.
- Check the exact installation specifications. Match the model’s water, drain, electrical, and—if applicable—venting or condensate requirements to the apartment.
- Confirm permission. Review lease and building rules before committing to a permanent or portable installation.
- Choose the format around the room. Compare front-load, top-load, stackable, under-counter, and all-in-one arrangements against door or lid clearance, vertical space, and service access.
- Match capacity to your laundry. Use the stated capacity and your normal load size; for combination machines, compare wash and dry capacities separately.
- Compare efficiency on labels. Use EnergyGuide operating-cost estimates and comparable IMEF and IWF values, and verify certification for the specific model.
Without the apartment’s measurements, connections, household load needs, and dryer plan, there is no responsible universal model recommendation. Those details determine whether a compact washer is merely small—or genuinely workable in your space.
