Which IKEA chair should you choose?
Choose based on fit and the adjustments you need, not a promise that a chair will fix back discomfort. The specifications below apply to the specific U.S. variants listed by IKEA; other colors or configurations may differ.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent ergonomic tests or individualized fit recommendations. The tested-load figures do not indicate which chair will be comfortable for a particular person.
What makes JÄRVFJÄLLET more adjustable?
IKEA lists adjustable lumbar support and seat depth, which let you change more of the chair’s fit than the MARKUS specifications describe. It also has an adjustable headrest and armrests that move in height and width. That makes it the clearer option to consider if you want more ways to tune the chair around your seating position.

Adjustability is useful only if the chair can be set to suit you. Check whether the seat depth leaves room behind your knees and whether the lumbar support meets your lower back comfortably. IKEA describes the chair’s back as airy mesh; mesh is a material and airflow feature, not evidence of improved back health.
When might MARKUS be the better fit?
MARKUS may suit someone who wants a more straightforward set of controls and whose body fits its fixed seat depth and lumbar-support placement. IKEA lists armrests, seat-height adjustment, manual tilt tension, synchronized tilt and a three-position tilt lock. Its retrieved variant is slightly wider at the seat than the compared JÄRVFJÄLLET variant, though measurements alone cannot determine comfort.

IKEA’s chair-selection guide describes FLINTAN as a simpler, airy option with a breathable mesh back and built-in lumbar support. The available guide does not provide enough comparable measurements to rank it precisely against MARKUS and JÄRVFJÄLLET. Consider it if those features appeal to you, then check the specific product listing for dimensions and adjustment details before deciding.

Check chair fit against your desk and body
Before buying, compare the chair’s stated dimensions with your own workspace and seating needs. The overall footprint matters in a compact office, while seat height and depth affect how you sit at your desk. Armrests also need to clear the desk or fit beneath it if you want to move the chair close to the work surface.
- Compare the seat-height range with your desk height and the position of your feet when seated.
- Check seat width and depth against your own measurements; a listed dimension cannot establish fit for every person.
- Measure the chair’s overall width and depth against available floor space and desk clearance.
- Check whether the armrests and headrest are positioned comfortably for you, and whether their adjustments provide useful range.
- Try the chair in person when feasible. A feature list cannot establish how comfortable it will feel over a workday.
Warranty and buying details
IKEA’s U.S. warranty page includes both MARKUS and JÄRVFJÄLLET among covered office chairs. It describes coverage for structural frames and moving parts, including caster components, the gas cylinder, mechanism, armrests and backrest adjustment mechanism.
