The best headboard for a Tempur-Pedic adjustable bed is one that fits the exact base and mounting brackets, stays clear of the mattress as it moves, and is approved by its maker for adjustable-bed use. Tempur-Pedic lists its Universal Headboard Bracket Kit for several current base families, but not every Tempur-Pedic generation. Confirm compatibility and measurements before buying; no particular headboard style or model is established as a universal fit.
What to look for in a headboard
Choose by fit and movement clearance, rather than appearance alone. A headboard that lines up with the mounting hardware can still obstruct the mattress when the head section rises. Check these points with the headboard and base manufacturers:
- Base and bracket match: Identify the adjustable base’s exact model and generation, then verify which bracket kit it supports.
- Mounting geometry: Measure the headboard’s bolt-hole spacing and confirm the bracket can align. Ask both manufacturers which bolts and hardware are required.
- Movement clearance: With the mattress in place, check that the headboard, trim, wings, and any cross-member do not catch the mattress or platform as the head section moves through its range.
- Mounting method: Determine whether the headboard is designed to attach to the base, a bed frame, or the wall. Those methods are not interchangeable; confirm the headboard maker permits the intended setup.
- Leg height and floor arrangement: Check the chosen base height and whether the bracket installation needs adjustment for that configuration.
Tempur-Pedic says its accessory was designed for headboards meeting Voluntary ISPA standards and advises checking fit with the headboard manufacturer. Which Tempur-Pedic bases are listed as compatible?
Tempur-Pedic’s Universal Headboard Bracket Kit compatibility page lists TEMPUR-Ease, Ergo, Ergo-Extend, and ProSmart power bases. The manufacturer cautions that older models may require different parts, so do not assume the word “universal” covers every Tempur-Pedic base generation. Check Tempur-Pedic’s compatibility guidance and verify your model if it is not listed.

Will an upholstered or padded headboard work?
It may, but padding, depth, side wings, and decorative details can reduce the space the mattress needs as it lifts. Tempur-Pedic warns that a padded headboard can interfere with movement and says bracket adjustment or furniture modification may be needed. How to check the bracket setup and install it
Use the manual for your exact base model; the TEMPUR ERGO SMART instructions do not establish that older bases use the same hardware or procedure.
- Identify the base: Find its exact model and generation, then confirm the bracket kit is supported by Tempur-Pedic.
- Check the headboard: Measure its mounting-hole distance and confirm its maker approves the intended adjustable-bed attachment.
- Install the bracket for your model: The TEMPUR ERGO SMART manual describes attaching the bracket at the base/leg point and frame tab. Follow the manual’s exact instructions for your base.
- Align the T-bracket: Adjust it to match the headboard’s mounting-hole distance and secure it as directed.
- Attach and test: Secure the headboard to the attachment plate with suitable bolts, then operate the base through its full head lift with the mattress in place. Stop if anything catches and resolve the clearance issue before regular use.

Do the brackets work with different base leg heights?
