For a clean, minimal look, IKEAβs BERGSHULT shelf is the best-documented place to startβbut it is not a universal winner. Choose by shelf length, bracket style, intended load, and wall material. BERGSHULT offers two edge looks and specific bracket guidance; LACKβs manual makes clear that mounting capacity depends on the wall and suitable fasteners.
How to choose an IKEA shelf with a floating look
βFloatingβ can mean a shelf with discreet support or simply a visually minimal wall shelf. The BERGSHULT board is sold on its own or in a listed combination with GRANHULT brackets; those are different setups, so check what is included before buying. LACK is another IKEA wall-shelf option, but its mounting instructions and load examples are specific to the cited manual.
- Measure the usable width and depth. The BERGSHULT options covered here are 7 7/8 inches deep, in 31 1/2- and 47 1/4-inch lengths.
- Decide how visible the support should be. The BERGSHULT board can be installed with either its beveled or smooth long edge facing outward. A GRANHULT bracket combination makes the support part of the look.
- Match the shelf and bracket configuration. IKEAβs load guidance changes with shelf length and, for the longer BERGSHULT, bracket count.
- Identify the wall material before choosing fasteners. A shelfβs product-page load figure does not establish what an unknown wall or fastener can safely hold.

The figures above are IKEA product specifications, not independent tests or a guarantee for every wall, anchor, or installation. Follow the instructions for the exact shelf and bracket arrangement, and do not apply the three-bracket rating to a two-bracket installation.
BERGSHULTβs edge and cut-to-length details
The 31 1/2-inch BERGSHULT board is particleboard with paper foil and plastic edging. One long edge is beveled and the other smooth, so you can choose which one faces the room. IKEA says the board can be cut to length and that GRANHULT can be used to cover a cut edge. If cutting or using a bracket not listed for a particular size, confirm the compatibility and mounting instructions rather than assuming the original load guidance still applies.

Where LACK fitsβand what its manual says about walls
LACK is a separate IKEA wall-shelf option. The cited U.S. product listing confirms the product, while the cited IKEA manual provides the detailed mounting guidance. For that manual version, installation calls for five screws or fittings, which are not included. IKEA instructs: βAlways choose screws or fittings which are suitable for the material of the wall and have sufficient holding power.β
The manual gives example maximum loads that vary by wall condition: 5 kg (11 lb) for board material fixed on joists, and 15 kg (33 lb) for concrete, lightweight concrete, brick, or wooden joists. These are examples from that LACK manual, not general ratings for those wall materials or anchor types. Confirm that the instructions match your exact LACK size and region.

- Confirm the exact shelf and support setup. Check its dimensions, bracket type and count, and the matching IKEA instructions.
- Determine what the wall is made of. Do not select screws or plugs by appearance or by a load example for a different wall.
- Choose suitable fasteners for that wall. IKEAβs BERGSHULT/GRANHULT listing warns: βWARNING! Falling hazard β to reduce the risk of this product falling down, it must be securely anchored. Use suitable screws and plugs for your home. If you are uncertain, seek professional advice.β
- Install to the stated spacing and distribute items evenly. For the 31 1/2-inch BERGSHULT board, IKEA recommends two brackets at least 27 1/2 inches apart; for the 47 1/4-inch board, follow the spacing and bracket-count guidance for the load arrangement you intend to use.
- Load only after checking the complete installation. A product limit assumes proper mounting; it cannot compensate for unsuitable fasteners, an unsuitable wall, or a different bracket setup.
