The best freestanding dishwasher is the one that fits your kitchen, handles the loads you actually wash, and has specifications and service support you can verify in your market. This guide uses a UK/European perspective for freestanding models, while identifying US energy-label information separately; dimensions and installation rules are not interchangeable across regions.
Start with the space and appliance type
Measure the available width, height and depth, then check the manufacturer’s installation instructions for required clearances, connections and door swing. Confirm that the model is genuinely freestanding: a built-in dishwasher is designed to fit into cabinetry, while portable models have different placement and connection requirements. Do not assume that a product listed simply as a “dishwasher” is suitable for a freestanding installation.
In the UK, Bosch describes its freestanding range as including standard 60 cm and slimline 45 cm widths. Those are options in one manufacturer’s UK range, not universal dimensions; verify the exact product measurements and installation conditions before ordering. Choose capacity by usable loading space
Place settings can help compare capacity, but they do not tell you how easily a machine accommodates your plates, pans, glasses and everyday dish shapes. Check rack spacing and layout, including whether the upper rack adjusts and whether a third rack makes sense for the cutlery or utensils you wash. If possible, compare the rack dimensions with the items that routinely cause loading problems in your kitchen.

Bosch says its UK freestanding range holds up to 14 place settings. Treat this as a manufacturer range statement, not a promise that every model holds that amount or that 14 place settings will match your cookware. Bosch Home UK
Compare energy and water figures on the right basis
For a UK purchase, use the model’s current local energy label and product documentation to compare energy and water consumption. For US models, ENERGY STAR certification sets efficiency thresholds, while the EnergyGuide label estimates annual electricity use and cost. They serve different purposes: certification indicates that a model meets program criteria; EnergyGuide estimates use and cost for comparison. Neither guarantees your household’s actual bill, which depends on use, utility rates and other conditions.

ENERGY STAR’s criteria effective July 19, 2023 set maximums of 240 kWh per year and 3.2 gallons per cycle for standard dishwashers, and 155 kWh per year and 2.0 gallons per cycle for compact dishwashers. ENERGY STAR’s undated guidance page, accessed in 2026, estimates that a standard-size certified dishwasher costs about $50 per year to run and can save about 5,800 gallons of water over its lifetime. These are program estimates, not a quote for a specific model, household or local utility rate. Decide how much noise matters
If the kitchen opens onto a living area or sits near bedrooms, compare the sound rating alongside the other specifications. Whirlpool’s 2026 US buying guide says dishwasher noise is measured in dBA and commonly falls in the 40s and 50s; lower numbers indicate quieter operation. Match cycles and drying to your usual loads
Check the cycle names and descriptions in the specific model’s manual or product page. Useful options may include eco, automatic or sensor, intensive, express and glass programs, but availability and performance vary by model. Also look at the drying method and any related options. If you often wash plastics, glasses or mixed loads, check what the manufacturer says about drying results and cycle duration rather than assuming a feature name guarantees a particular outcome. Independent comparisons are most useful when they identify the market, models tested and methods used. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide excerpt compares dishwasher performance, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, energy use, noise, cycle time, features and approximate retail price. Before choosing between finalists, check current local availability, exact dimensions, installation and delivery terms, warranty and service coverage. Specifications and model lineups change; make the comparison at the model level rather than relying on a brand’s broad range description.
