To care for an umbrella tree indoors, give it bright, indirect light, plant it in a well-draining houseplant mix, and water thoroughly when the soil has dried somewhat. First check the label: this guide covers the dwarf umbrella tree, Schefflera arboricola, also called Heptapleurum arboricola. The common name can also refer to the larger Schefflera actinophylla, so advice for one species should not automatically be applied to the other.
Which plant is your umbrella tree?
“Umbrella tree” is an everyday name, not a reliable species identification. The dwarf umbrella tree is Schefflera arboricola; North Carolina State Extension uses the accepted name Heptapleurum arboricola and lists Schefflera arboricola as a synonym. It is commonly grown as a container houseplant. The name is also used for Schefflera actinophylla, a different species. Iowa State University Extension’s umbrella-tree care page addresses that species, not the dwarf one.
| Common-name possibility | Botanical name | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Dwarf umbrella tree | Schefflera arboricola / Heptapleurum arboricola | RHS and North Carolina State Extension provide houseplant guidance for this plant. |
| Umbrella tree | Schefflera actinophylla | Iowa State Extension’s umbrella-tree care guidance is for this species; it is not a complete care comparison with the dwarf species. |
If you are buying a live plant or looking up care, use “dwarf umbrella tree” or the botanical name to avoid mixing up the two.
Where should you place a dwarf umbrella tree?
Choose bright, indirect light
Set the plant where it receives bright light without prolonged direct sun. A bright room near a window is a practical starting point; avoid placing it in a dim corner. Iowa State Extension gives a similar placement for S. actinophylla: “In the home, place the umbrella tree in bright, indirect light near an east, west, or south window.” That statement is specific to the species on its page, but it supports bright, indirect light as a sensible placement for an umbrella tree.

Avoid sudden environmental changes
Keep the plant away from cold drafts and strong blasts from heating or cooling vents. If moving it, do so deliberately and observe how it responds rather than changing its light, watering, and location all at once.
What soil and pot does it need?
Use standard houseplant compost or a well-draining houseplant mix. Choose a pot with drainage holes so excess water can escape; a plant left standing in water is more likely to remain too wet. The right mix and drainage work together: drainage holes cannot compensate for persistently soggy soil, and a free-draining mix still needs sensible watering.

How and when should you water?
Check the soil rather than following a fixed weekly schedule. Pot size, light, room conditions, and season all affect how quickly it dries.
- Check the soil before watering. Let it dry somewhat between waterings rather than keeping it continuously wet.
- When watering is needed, moisten the soil thoroughly.
- Let excess water drain from the pot; do not leave the plant sitting in standing water.
- Check again before the next watering instead of repeating it automatically on a calendar.
Both overly dry soil and persistently damp soil can stress the roots and contribute to leaf loss. The Royal Horticultural Society advises moderate watering during active growth and sparing watering in winter for S. arboricola, so reduce watering when the plant is using less water rather than keeping a summer routine unchanged.

Does an umbrella tree need fertilizer?
The Royal Horticultural Society’s care guidance emphasizes watering and general cultivation; the sources do not establish one required fertilizer schedule for every dwarf umbrella tree. Iowa State Extension recommends dilute fertilizer once or twice monthly in spring and summer for S. actinophylla. Treat that as guidance for the related species, not a universal prescription for S. arboricola; follow the fertilizer label if you choose to feed your plant.
Why is the plant dropping leaves?
Leaf drop is a symptom of stress, not a diagnosis on its own. University of Maryland Extension lists inadequate light, overwatering, underwatering, root trouble, drafts, and temperature changes among possible causes for an indoor Schefflera.

- Check soil moisture. Very dry soil may indicate underwatering; soil that stays damp may point to excessive watering or poor drainage.
- Check drainage. Confirm the pot has drainage holes and is not standing in collected water.
- Assess light. Make sure the plant has bright, indirect light rather than a persistently dim position.
- Look for recent changes. Consider a move, a draft, a nearby heat vent, or a temperature shift.
- Adjust one condition at a time. Observe the plant’s response before making another change.
Several factors can contribute at once, so avoid assuming that leaf drop proves a single watering problem.

Pruning
Use clean, sharp pruning shears to remove unwanted growth or shape the plant. Clean tools help avoid transferring problems from other plants. Make considered cuts rather than removing a large amount of growth at once.

Rooting a stem cutting
A stem cutting can be rooted in water or soil. Michigan State University Extension’s Master Gardener response recommends a clean, sharp knife or pruners, keeping the cutting from drying before placing it in water or soil, and providing bright but indirect light while roots develop.
- Take a stem cutting with a clean, sharp tool.
- Keep the cutting from drying out while you prepare to root it.
- Place it in water or soil and keep it in bright, indirect light as roots develop.
Rooting is a practical home method, not a guaranteed result. The Royal Horticultural Society also lists semi-ripe cuttings, seed, and air-layering as propagation methods.
What pests and pet-safety risks should you know?
The Royal Horticultural Society lists red spider mite, mealybugs, and scale insects as possible pests. Inspect leaves and stems periodically, especially if the plant looks stressed.
North Carolina State Extension warns that all parts of Heptapleurum arboricola are seriously toxic to dogs and cats. Keep it out of reach of pets that chew plants.
