For ice-based smoothies, choose a blender whose manual explicitly approves ice crushing—not an ordinary food-processor bowl. A food-processor/blender combo may do the job in its blender jar if the instructions say so. The container and model-specific directions matter: a combo’s blender jar is not interchangeable with its processor bowl.
Can a food processor crush ice?
There is no universal yes. The manufacturer guidance cited here supports using designated blender ice-crush functions; it does not establish that food-processor bowls generally are designed to crush ice. Before putting ice in any appliance, check the manual for your exact model and vessel. If the manual does not explicitly permit it, do not assume the bowl or blade is suitable.
For example, an excerpt from the Cuisinart SmartPower Duet blender/food-processor manual directs users to put ice cubes in the blender jar and use Ice Crush in short pulses. That is guidance for this combo model, not permission to use its food-processor bowl or other processors. The excerpt is hosted by Best Buy, so check your own manual for the applicable instructions: Cuisinart SmartPower Duet manual excerpt. Cuisinart’s food processor and chopper manuals index is a place to find model documentation; the index itself does not say that processor bowls are ice-safe.

KitchenAid’s K150 product page describes ice-crushing use, and the brand lists K400 programs including Ice Crush, Icy Drink, and Smoothie. These are examples of manufacturer-described features, not a tested ranking or confirmation of current availability in every market. See KitchenAid’s smoothie maker page.
Follow the model’s ice quantity and cycle instructions
Even instructions for the same blender family can give different quantities for different contexts. KitchenAid’s Diamond Blender directions specify up to half a standard ice-cube tray—about 6–7 standard cubes—for the Crush Ice procedure. That function pulses for 30 seconds at staggered intervals. The separate Diamond Blender tips page says up to one standard tray, or 12–14 standard cubes. Follow the directions for your exact model and task rather than treating either amount as a universal limit.

KitchenAid’s US product page also says its ice-crush setting can crush ice in less than 10 seconds, based on half a tray. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent performance test; use your own model’s manual for operating instructions. KitchenAid smoothie maker page.
How to make a smoother, chunk-free smoothie
- Check the manual and use the approved jar. Confirm that your blender permits ice and follow its batch limits.
- Add ingredients in a useful order. KitchenAid recommends adding liquids first, followed by sweeteners, leafy greens, soft ingredients, fruit or vegetables, nuts, seeds or grains, and frozen ingredients and ice last. KitchenAid’s blending tips.
- Break up chunky ingredients before blending at higher speed. KitchenAid advises using pulse or Crush Ice first, then progressing to higher speeds for a chunk-free smoothie. Use those controls only as your model’s manual directs.
- Stop if the appliance struggles. If ingredients are not moving or the motor sounds strained, stop and consult the manual rather than forcing a longer run or adding more ice.
Blender or food processor for an icy smoothie?
For a drink made with ice, a blender with a documented ice-crush function is the clearest fit in the available manufacturer guidance. A food processor is a different tool, and its bowl should not be treated as an ice-crushing container unless the exact manual says it is. In a combo appliance, follow the vessel-specific instruction: the Cuisinart SmartPower Duet excerpt, for instance, identifies its blender jar for ice crushing.
