There is no single “best foil insulation”: the right choice depends on the building assembly. A foil radiant barrier can help limit solar heat gain in some vented attics in hot climates, provided it faces an air space. Foil-faced polyisocyanurate is different: its foam core supplies bulk thermal resistance, while its foil facing can serve reflective and vapor-control functions. Choose by location, climate, air-space design, moisture strategy, and code—not by a foil-only R-value claim.

What does “foil insulation” mean?

The label covers different materials and assemblies, not one product with a universal R-value. Common types include:

  • Radiant-barrier foil: A reflective sheet, usually installed facing an air space, often at an attic roof or ceiling. Its main purpose is to reduce radiant heat transfer across that space.
  • Reflective insulation: A system of reflective surfaces with enclosed air spaces. It may be sold as a sheet, blanket, concertina form, or multi-cell product. Performance belongs to the tested assembly, not the shiny surface alone.
  • Reflective bubble foil: A reflective product incorporating bubbles or other enclosed spaces. Its performance depends on product construction, installation, and air spaces; it should not be assumed equivalent to conventional bulk insulation.
  • Foil-faced rigid foam board: A composite product such as foil-faced polyisocyanurate. The foam core provides bulk thermal resistance; the facing is not a substitute for the board’s stated insulation value.

For a standards-based description, ASTM C1224 says reflective insulations “derive thermal performance from surfaces with an emittance of 0.1 or less, facing enclosed air spaces.” That definition concerns the reflective system and its air spaces, not a general R-value for foil: ASTM C1224.

How foil works—and why it needs an air space

A low-emittance reflective surface reduces radiant heat exchange across an adjacent air space. If foil is pressed continuously against solid materials on both sides, it cannot provide meaningful insulation through that reflective mechanism. Air-space dimensions, orientation, direction of heat flow, and surface condition affect the result.

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s historical technical summary explains that “Aluminum foil is used to increase the insulating value of air spaces by reducing heat transfer by radiation.” It also notes that foil has value only with air spaces for this purpose, apart from a possible role in preventing air leakage. This is a technical explanation, not a current product rating: National Bureau of Standards summary.

Air-space guidance varies by jurisdiction and product assembly. Australia’s YourHome recommends at least 20 mm next to the shiny surface and describes 45 mm as ideal; those figures are Australian guidance, not universal code requirements. In the United States, DOE Building America guidance also requires an adjacent air space. Use the tested product configuration and applicable local rules for a real design: YourHome insulation guidance and DOE Building America guide.

Where foil insulation can make sense

Radiant barriers in suitable vented attics

DOE Building America identifies reflective insulation as potentially useful in vented attics in hot-dry and hot-humid climates, where it can reduce solar heat gain. PNNL’s Building America Solution Center describes attic placement next to an air space. The benefit is not universal: DOE says radiant barriers are not recommended for cold climates or unvented attics, and adding more attic insulation reduces a radiant barrier’s cost-effectiveness. See the PNNL attic radiant-barrier guide and DOE guidance.

Foil-faced foam board as part of a designed assembly

Foil-faced polyisocyanurate may be selected where rigid foam insulation is appropriate and the full wall or roof design accounts for its thermal and vapor-control properties. In DOE’s 2012 Energy Renovations guide, polyisocyanurate is listed at R-5.6 to R-8 per inch, and foil-facing configurations at R-7.1 to R-8.7; these are figures as presented in that guide, not guaranteed values for every current product or assembly. Confirm the specific board’s current data and intended use: DOE Energy Renovations guide.

Cold-climate claims need particular scrutiny

Natural Resources Canada cautions that reflective bubble foil and radiant-barrier products are often marketed with high insulation claims and are not a substitute for ordinary insulation in Canada’s cold climate. Its cited range—RSI 0 (R-0) to RSI 0.62 (R-3.5)—is dependent on product and installation; it is not a universal rating for all foil products. Compare a product’s tested assembly with the insulation level the building needs: Natural Resources Canada, Keeping the Heat In.

Which side should foil face?

There is no reliable one-direction-fits-all rule. The reflective surface needs to face the specified air space to perform as a radiant surface, but the foil’s low-permeance vapor-control effect also matters. Correct placement depends on climate, whether the building is heated or air-conditioned, the roof or wall layers, and the product’s installation instructions. YourHome discusses different foil positioning in cooler climates and in hot-humid, air-conditioned buildings; follow a design that manages condensation across the entire assembly rather than choosing a side by habit: YourHome insulation guidance.

How to compare foil insulation options

Option What provides the performance Best fit to investigate Key limitation
Foil radiant-barrier roll Reflective surface facing an adjacent air space Some vented attics in hot climates, subject to assembly and local rules Not a substitute for bulk insulation; not recommended by DOE for cold climates or unvented attics.
Reflective or bubble-foil system Product-specific reflective surfaces and air spaces Only where the tested configuration and climate suit the building Claims vary by system and installation; Natural Resources Canada’s cited range for reflective bubble foil and radiant barriers is R-0 to R-3.5, not a rating for every product.
Foil-faced polyisocyanurate board Foam core supplies bulk thermal resistance; foil facing has reflective and vapor-control functions Assemblies designed for rigid foam and its vapor behavior Use the exact board’s current data; the foil facing alone is not the board’s R-value.

Before selecting a product, check:

  • Whether it is intended for the location and climate, and whether the attic is vented.
  • Whether the design supplies the required adjacent air space and keeps that space clear.
  • Whether performance claims refer to a tested full assembly or an isolated material figure.
  • For rigid foam, the board thickness and its stated R-value—not a value attributed to the foil facing.
  • How the foil’s vapor-control properties affect condensation risk in the complete assembly.
  • Product-specific fire documentation, installation instructions, and acceptance under local code.
  • Electrical clearances and whether qualified installation is appropriate.

Moisture, fire, and electrical safety

Plan vapor control with the whole assembly

Foil can act as a vapor retarder. A low-permeance layer in the wrong position can contribute to trapped moisture or condensation, so evaluate the climate, interior conditioning, and all roof or wall layers together. Do not apply a generic rule that foil always belongs on the warm side or always faces indoors.

Check fire requirements for the exact product and location

Fire performance is specific to the product and assembly. Foil-faced foam may need a protective thermal or ignition barrier depending on where it is installed and the applicable code. A rating for another product does not establish fire safety for the one being considered.

Keep conductive foil clear of electrical equipment

Foil conducts electricity. Prevent contact with wiring and electrical equipment, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local electrical and building codes. Installation rules cited by YourHome—including certified installation and nonmetallic staples—are jurisdiction-specific, not universal requirements: YourHome insulation guidance.

Is foil radiant-barrier insulation worth it?

It is most worth evaluating when a building has a suitable vented attic in a hot climate, the proposed installation preserves the required air space, and the rest of the attic insulation and assembly have been considered. It is a weaker fit where the attic is unvented, the climate is cold, or the intended installation presses the foil against solid material. The available evidence does not establish a universal household-savings figure; actual value depends on the building, climate, and installation.

What is the best foil insulation for an attic?

For a suitable vented attic in a hot climate, a foil radiant-barrier roll is the relevant category to compare—not a blanket claim that it is the best insulation. Verify air-space requirements, moisture detailing, wiring clearances, fire provisions, and code acceptance before installation. For an attic roof assembly needing bulk insulation, compare a properly specified insulation system, which may include foil-faced rigid foam, on its complete thermal and moisture performance.
