Best Electric On-Demand Water Heaters: How to Choose One That Fits

The right electric on-demand water heater must meet your household’s simultaneous hot-water demand at the needed temperature rise—and fit your home’s electrical capacity.

The best electric on-demand water heater is one that can deliver your home’s required hot-water flow at the temperature rise you need—and that your electrical service can support. Start by sizing for the fixtures you may use at the same time, then confirm the unit’s electrical requirements with a qualified electrician. Without that information, a headline “gallons per minute” figure or a claim of endless hot water is not enough to choose a whole-home system.

What an electric on-demand water heater does

An electric instantaneous water heater heats potable water as it passes through the unit, rather than storing a tankful for later use. The U.S. Department of Energy’s regulatory definition describes a consumer water heater as a product that “utilizes oil, gas, or electricity to heat potable water for use outside the heater upon demand.” DOE’s consumer-water-heater page reproduces that definition.

On-demand does not mean unlimited hot water at every flow rate. The heater has to raise incoming water to the desired delivery temperature while supplying the amount of water flowing through it. If the required flow or temperature rise exceeds the unit’s capability, the water may not reach the target temperature.

How to size a heater for your household

1. Estimate simultaneous hot-water demand

List the hot-water fixtures and appliances you might use at the same time—for example, a shower while a kitchen tap is running. The relevant demand is their combined hot-water flow, not the total number of fixtures in the home. A point-of-use unit may be suitable for one fixture or location; a whole-home unit must be selected for the home’s expected simultaneous use.

2. Work out the temperature rise

Temperature rise is the difference between the incoming water temperature and the intended delivery temperature. The colder the incoming water, the more the heater must raise its temperature to reach the same target. Use the coldest incoming-water condition expected at your home when assessing capacity, rather than assuming a year-round average.

3. Compare flow at the required temperature rise

Check each candidate’s rated flow at the temperature rise that applies to your home. A flow figure without its temperature-rise condition is not a fair way to compare heaters: the same unit may provide a different flow when it must produce a larger temperature increase. The Department of Energy’s Building Science Education sizing discussion explains the general flow-plus-temperature-rise method in its gas tankless section; apply that method, but do not treat its gas-product examples or ratings as electric-heater specifications. Read the DOE sizing guidance.

This is the key question behind “Will it run a shower and another tap at the same time?” It can only be answered by comparing the combined demand and required temperature rise with the specific unit’s rated performance under those conditions.

Check electrical capacity before choosing a whole-home unit

Electric tankless heaters can be substantial electrical loads. An ENERGY STAR-hosted 2007 competitive assessment reported residential electric tankless heating-element inputs ranging from 2.4 to 28 kW and noted that many installations may require an electrical-service upgrade. Those figures describe the category as reported in that historical assessment; they are not specifications for current models or a prediction that a particular home needs an upgrade. The assessment also gave approximately 147 watts to heat water flowing at one gallon per minute by one degree Fahrenheit as an engineering rule of thumb, not as a product rating. Read the ENERGY STAR-hosted assessment.

Rheem 11kW Multi Fixture Tankless Electric Water Heater - 240V
  • Get the performance you expect. Choose the right size water heater for your home and verify electrical requirements before installation. When properly sized and professionally installed, Rheem Tankless Electric Water Heaters deliver reliable, on-demand hot water while saving valuable space.
  • 11kW model provides up to 2.68 GPM
  • Multiple fixture applicatons
  • Wiring Requirements (RTEX‑11): Requires 240V single‑phase power, one- 50‑amp double‑pole breaker, one set of #8 AWG copper conductors with ground, and a recommended minimum 100‑amp household electrical service panel for proper operation
  • Digital thermostatic temperature controls in 1-degree increments ranging from 80°F - 140°F (26°C - 60°C)

Whether your panel and service can support a candidate depends on the home’s existing electrical installation and the manufacturer’s requirements. Have a qualified electrician review the actual service and panel capacity, wiring, breakers, voltage, and installation instructions for the specific unit. There is no single panel size that can be assumed sufficient for every home, and not every installation necessarily requires an upgrade.

What to compare when shopping

Use the manufacturer’s current documentation for each specific model. Compare these items before treating a product as a fit:

  • Most advanced self-modulation, adjust power to meet hot water demand
  • Durable Copper immersion two heating elements, field Serviceable. Flow Rate- up to 4.4 GPM
  • Simple installation – bottom 3/4 inch NPT water connections

  • Flow at the relevant temperature rise: Look for a rating tied to the temperature increase your home needs, not just a maximum-flow headline.
  • Electrical input and voltage: Confirm both against the home’s electrical installation.
  • Circuit and service requirements: Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and have an electrician assess feasibility.
  • Intended application: Determine whether the unit is for point-of-use service or whole-home demand, and whether it is sized for the fixtures you expect to run together.
  • Installation and local requirements: Verify applicable code, permits, warranty terms, and current availability for the model and location. These details vary and must be confirmed for the specific purchase.

ENERGY STAR’s current key-criteria page explains certification categories and terminology such as UEF and GPM. It is useful for understanding those terms, but it does not establish that a particular electric tankless model is currently certified. See ENERGY STAR’s water-heater key criteria.

Point-of-use or whole-home?

A point-of-use electric tankless heater serves a limited fixture or location. A whole-home unit is intended to supply multiple locations and therefore must be assessed against the home’s peak simultaneous demand as well as its electrical capacity. Neither category is automatically the better choice: the right application depends on where hot water is needed, how much may be used concurrently, and whether the electrical installation can meet the candidate’s requirements.

When searching for an electric tankless water heater, treat that phrase as a product category—not as a recommendation for any particular listing. The available evidence does not establish a current, defensible ranking of named models. Before buying, verify a candidate’s flow at the relevant temperature rise, electrical requirements, availability, and warranty directly in current manufacturer documentation.

What this comparison can—and cannot—establish

The sizing and electrical checks above help determine whether an electric on-demand heater is plausible for a home and what specifications to investigate. They do not establish a current “best” model, a purchase price, installation cost, local incentive eligibility, guaranteed bill savings, or lifecycle payback. Those depend on the model, location, household, and installation; confirm them with current product information and a site-specific professional assessment.
