For a home with a septic system, start with a dishwasher’s gallons per cycle, then compare annual energy use, capacity and installation fit. ENERGY STAR’s current standard-size criteria allow up to 3.2 gallons per cycle and 240 kWh per year; compact models have lower qualification limits. These are efficiency benchmarks, not a septic-specific certification or a guarantee that a model suits every household.
What makes a dishwasher a good choice for a septic system?
Every drop of water sent down household drains enters the septic system. Using water efficiently can support system operation and reduce the risk of malfunction, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). That makes water per cycle a useful comparison when replacing a dishwasher—but there is no EPA or ENERGY STAR septic-dishwasher rating and no established septic-specific water-use threshold.
ENERGY STAR certification is a practical starting point for comparing efficiency, not proof that a particular appliance is right for a household. Check the model’s listed gallons per cycle, annual energy use, capacity and dimensions. A low-use machine that is too small for the household may require more frequent cycles, while a high-capacity model may be unnecessary for a smaller home.
Efficiency benchmarks and example models
ENERGY STAR’s current dishwasher criteria, effective July 19, 2023, set maximum annual energy and water use by size category. The agency’s product listings also offer model-family examples. Those listings can change, so check the exact suffix or SKU and current certification before buying.

How to compare models for your home
- Gallons per cycle: Compare the listed figure across models in the same size category. Lower use per cycle means less dishwasher water enters the system for that cycle, but household habits and cycle frequency also matter.
- Annual energy use: Use the kWh-per-year figure to compare energy efficiency alongside water use. It is a standardized comparison measure, not a prediction of your household’s exact bill.
- Capacity: Match place settings to household size and how often you run full loads. A capacity number is most useful when considered with your actual dishes and cooking habits.
- Installation fit: Confirm width, depth, height, connections and clearances against the opening and manufacturer’s installation specifications. Efficiency figures cannot tell you whether an appliance will fit.
- Cycle controls: Look for options that suit your routine, such as soil sensing or the ability to omit an extra rinse. Use the appropriate cycle and avoid adding rinse steps you do not need.
- Cost and local availability: Compare current prices and confirm the exact retail SKU; prices and availability are not established by the efficiency listings above.
Use the dishwasher in a septic-conscious way

- Run the dishwasher with a full load rather than several partial loads.
- Scrape food into the trash or compost instead of rinsing dishes before loading, and use the appropriate detergent amount.
- Skip extra rinse cycles when the machine allows and they are not needed.
- Stagger the dishwasher and other water-generating appliances instead of running them all at once.
Choose detergent carefully, without assuming it treats the tank
EPA recommends phosphate-free soaps and detergents. Phosphorus from wastewater can contribute to nutrient pollution in surface waters, so reducing it is an environmental benefit. That recommendation does not mean every phosphate-free product is certified or proven “septic-safe,” and detergent does not treat or maintain the septic tank. Do not add septic-system additives for routine domestic wastewater treatment; EPA says they are unnecessary and can harm drainfield performance.

EPA recommends professional inspection of household septic systems at least every three years. Tanks are typically pumped every three to five years, but the right schedule depends on factors including system type, tank size, household size and water use. Ask the local permitting authority or a septic professional for advice tailored to your system.
