Best Tubing for an Ice Maker: How to Choose a Safe, Compatible Line

The right ice-maker tubing depends on the appliance instructions. Compare copper, approved PEX or plastic, and braided stainless, then verify size, fittings, valve, and route.

For a refrigerator ice maker, the best tubing is the material and fitting setup approved by the refrigerator’s installation instructions—not one universal “best” line. Many manufacturer guides specify 1/4-inch outside-diameter tubing, but they differ on whether copper, PEX, braided stainless, or a named supply line is acceptable. Check your exact model before buying, and plan for a cold-water connection, an unkinked route, and enough slack to move the refrigerator.

Start with the refrigerator’s installation instructions

Recommendations vary by model and manufacturer. Whirlpool’s general supply-line help page recommends copper tubing or its Whirlpool supply line, Part Number 8212547RP. Other Whirlpool refrigerator guidance permits soft copper or PEX, while Sub-Zero lists copper, braided stainless, or PEX for its units. A separate Whirlpool ice-maker-kit guide calls for copper only and prohibits polyethylene tubing. Those instructions are not interchangeable: follow the manual for the exact refrigerator and any specific ice-maker kit being installed.

For example, Whirlpool’s “How to Install the Water Supply Line” page recommends copper or its named supply line. Its separate 2022 installation guide applies to a particular kit and specifies copper. GE’s refrigerator tubing guidance approves copper or its SmartConnect heavy-duty cross-linked plastic line.

Compare tubing options by compatibility, not by a universal winner

Tubing option What manufacturer guidance supports What to verify
Copper Recommended or permitted in the cited Whirlpool, GE, and Sub-Zero guidance. The cited Whirlpool kit guide specifies 1/4-inch O.D. copper only. Manual approval, tubing length, compatible compression fittings, and the required shutoff valve.
PEX or approved plastic line Whirlpool refrigerator guidance permits 1/4-inch O.D. PEX. GE approves its SmartConnect line for covered refrigerator connections. Confirm the exact line is approved for your model. Do not assume generic plastic tubing is equivalent; the cited Whirlpool kit guide prohibits polyethylene.
Braided stainless or stainless flex Sub-Zero lists braided stainless for its units. GE’s standalone ice-machine guidance allows stainless flex. Check appliance approval, hose length, connection ends, and whether the guidance applies to a refrigerator or a standalone machine.

The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that one material is universally safer, more durable, or less prone to failure. Compare a candidate line on these practical points:

  • Model approval: The appliance instructions take precedence over a general-purpose product description.
  • Size and connectors: The cited refrigerator guidance specifies 1/4-inch outside diameter (O.D.). O.D. is not the same as inside diameter, and fittings should not be assumed interchangeable.
  • Route and length: Choose a line long enough to reach the shutoff while leaving a service loop, but avoid excess tubing that could be pinched or kinked.
  • Valve and fittings: Confirm the connector ends and shutoff arrangement required by the installation instructions and local plumbing code.

Plan a cold-water route that stays unkinked and serviceable

The refrigerator guidance describes a cold-water connection. Route the line so it cannot be crushed behind the refrigerator or kinked when the appliance is pushed back. Whirlpool notes that kinks reduce water flow; restricted flow can interfere with ice production. Leave a service loop—a modest, accessible length of tubing behind the appliance—so it can be pulled forward for cleaning or service without straining the connection. Whirlpool’s refrigerator ice-production guidance discusses kinks and flow.

Check shutoff valves and fittings before installation

Valve requirements are model-specific. The cited Whirlpool kit guide prohibits piercing-type and 3/16-inch shutoff valves, stating that they can reduce flow and clog easily. Apply that restriction to the kit covered by that guide, rather than treating it as a rule for every ice maker; check the current instructions for your appliance and installation.

Sub-Zero says installation must comply with applicable plumbing codes and recommends an accessible shutoff. If connecting the appliance requires changing the household supply or valve, check local code requirements and consider using a qualified plumber. Sub-Zero’s water-line and valve specifications describe its requirements.

Keep standalone ice-machine specifications separate

Some ice machines are standalone or undercounter units rather than refrigerator ice makers. GE’s guidance for its standalone ice machine lists an incoming-water pressure range of 20 to 80 PSI and an inlet-water temperature range of 40°F to 90°F. It recommends 1/4-inch O.D. copper and also allows stainless flex or reinforced PVC. These are GE standalone-machine specifications, not universal requirements for refrigerator ice makers. Check GE’s incoming water requirements for the relevant product.

What to check before buying a line

  1. Find the refrigerator’s model number and open its installation instructions.
  2. Confirm the approved tubing material and 1/4-inch O.D. connection requirement, if specified.
  3. Check the connection ends, compatible fittings, shutoff-valve requirements, and any restrictions on tubing or valves.
  4. Measure the route to the cold-water supply and allow for a service loop without leaving tubing where it can be pinched.
  5. Buy a model-approved line or a compatible tubing-and-fitting setup. Whirlpool part 8212547RP and GE SmartConnect lines are manufacturer-specific examples; GE lists WX08X10006G (8 feet) and WX08X10015 (15 feet). Verify compatibility and current availability with the manufacturer before ordering.

A practical search phrase is “1/4 inch refrigerator ice maker water line,” but the phrase alone does not confirm material approval, connector compatibility, or suitability for a particular model.
