For a 700-square-foot space, Frigidaire’s sizing guide recommends a 50-pint dehumidifier when conditions are slightly or moderately damp, and 70 pints when the space is wet. Treat those figures as starting points, not universal rules: the right capacity depends on both floor area and how much moisture is present.
What size dehumidifier do I need for 700 square feet?
Dehumidifier capacity is the amount of water a unit removes in 24 hours, expressed in pints per day. Frigidaire’s guide gives these recommendations for a 700-square-foot area:
| Moisture condition | Frigidaire guide recommendation |
|---|---|
| Slightly or moderately damp | 50 pints |
| Wet | 70 pints |
These are conditional recommendations from Frigidaire’s Dehumidifier Sizing Guide, not a capacity guarantee for every room. ENERGY STAR says sizing depends on both the area and the conditions without dehumidification. Its broad guidance for areas under 2,000 square feet gives ranges of 20–30 pints per day for slightly to moderately damp spaces, 25–40 for very damp spaces, and 30–50 for wet spaces. The ranges differ because guides use different moisture categories and assumptions; assess the actual conditions and use the manufacturer’s guidance for your situation.
If you are shopping for a 50 pint dehumidifier, that category aligns with Frigidaire’s recommendation for a 700-square-foot space that is slightly or moderately damp. For a wet space, its guide calls for 70 pints. ENERGY STAR’s general buying advice is: “Remember, it’s better to oversize than undersize!” Consider that alongside the dampness guidance rather than treating oversizing as a substitute for assessing the room.

What is the best dehumidifier for 700 square feet?
There is no single best unit established by room size alone, and no particular model has been independently tested here. Choose a model that fits the space’s moisture conditions, then compare its efficiency, drainage, operating limits, and physical fit. A product listing or manual should support each specification you rely on.
Compare capacity and efficiency
Compare capacity in pints per day, but check which rating standard a product uses before comparing figures. ENERGY STAR measures certified dehumidifier efficiency using integrated energy factor (IEF), expressed as liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour; a higher IEF indicates greater efficiency. Its key efficiency criteria set thresholds by capacity tier, and its Version 6 specification provides certification details. Verify current certification in ENERGY STAR’s dehumidifier product finder.

Check the features that affect installation and use
- Drainage: Check whether the model drains into a bucket, supports a hose connection, or includes a pump. Confirm what the manual says about setup and placement.
- Bucket capacity: A larger bucket may mean less frequent emptying, but it does not change the unit’s rated water-removal capacity.
- Operating temperature: Confirm the specified temperature range, especially for basements or other cool spaces.
- Dimensions and controls: Check measurements against the available floor space and review the control functions you need.
- Noise and electrical safety: Use documented noise information where available, and follow the manufacturer’s electrical-safety warnings.
These details vary by model. For example, Midea’s MDP user manual lists specifications across 30-, 50-, and 70-pint models; it is a product reference, not evidence that one model outperforms another.

Why do newer dehumidifiers show lower pint ratings?
A capacity figure may look smaller than older advice because the U.S. Department of Energy revised its test procedure. ENERGY STAR explains that the updated test uses cooler conditions comparable to a basement, where a unit removes less water. Its rough comparison maps 50 old-rated pints to approximately 30 current-rated pints, and 70 old-rated pints to approximately 40–45 current-rated pints. These are approximate conversions from ENERGY STAR’s explanation of the 2020 procedure change, not model-specific guarantees; actual changes vary by product. See Dehumidifier Testing and Capacity.
When comparing products or sizing advice, check whether the numbers use the old or current test basis. Do not assume that a current 30-pint rating is equivalent to every product once described as 50 pints.

When room size is not enough to choose capacity
Persistent wetness, seepage, or a high moisture load can call for reassessing capacity and investigating the moisture source. A dehumidifier can remove moisture from the air, but the floor area alone does not explain why a room is wet or establish that a particular unit will resolve the underlying problem.
