What counts as a freestanding shower stall?
Look at what the product includes, not just the word “freestanding.” A complete stall has its own shower walls and base. By contrast, Delta describes its 36 × 36 in. frameless glass enclosure for tile applications and lists a compatible base separately. That is an enclosure purchase, not a complete stall kit. Check the product listing and installation documents to confirm what is in the box before comparing options.
A documented compact complete stall: Mustee DURASTALL model 30
E.L. Mustee describes DURASTALL model 30 as a “free-standing DURASTALL Shower Stall” that becomes freestanding when assembled. Its standard base measures 30 × 30 in. The manufacturer lists three thermoplastic walls, a molded top frame, front supports, a slip-resistant base and drain assembly, a safety railing with soap and shampoo holders, a shower valve and head, a shower curtain and rod, and assembly hardware. The stall has no pre-drilled holes; the installer determines valve placement. That flexibility makes plumbing layout an early decision, not a detail to leave until assembly. Confirm drain position and access to the water supply against the exact installation sheet for the unit.

Mustee’s manufacturer page calls it “the smart money choice.” That is the company’s promotional wording, not an independent value assessment. The manufacturer specifications do not establish a current retail price, stock, shipping cost, or whether a particular retailer carries the model.
What to verify before choosing a stall
Footprint, entry, ceiling, and delivery route
Compare the product’s actual exterior and interior dimensions, entry opening, and required ceiling clearance. Then measure the route from the delivery point to the bathroom, including doorways, turns, and stairs. A compact 30 × 30 in. stall, a larger accessible multi-piece system, and a one-piece shower can have very different delivery and installation constraints. Check the current model submittal before framing or ordering; do not assume the advertised footprint tells the whole story.

Drain, supply lines, and valve location
Establish where the drain and water supply are, how the selected stall connects to them, and whether the valve can be placed where the installation allows. Mustee states that model 30 has no pre-drilled holes and that the installer determines valve placement. Do not cut openings or set rough plumbing based only on a general product description—use the selected unit’s installation instructions.
Threshold and accessibility requirements
A low threshold may help with entry, but it does not by itself make a bathroom accessible. Freedom Showers lists a multi-piece accessible shower with a 1 in. threshold, a textured slip-resistant floor, and a self-supporting pre-leveled base. Its dimensions and installation conditions are specific to that product. Framing and surface conditions
Installation requirements vary by product. Delta’s Portwood guide says that door system must be installed into studs. The National Glass Association’s 2023 frameless enclosure manual identifies properly pitched surfaces as an important installation factor. Follow the instructions for the exact door or shower system, and check local requirements before work begins.

Choosing the right format for the project
- Choose a complete kit when you want the walls and base supplied as part of one stall package and its dimensions and plumbing plan suit the room.
- Consider a glass enclosure when the project is built around a tiled shower and you have accounted for the separately sold base, where required.
- Evaluate an accessible system against the specific user’s entry, transfer, or roll-in requirements and the applicable standards—not threshold height alone.
- Check one-piece feasibility early by comparing the unit’s full dimensions with the route into the bathroom and the installation space.
