Best Chain Door Guards for Your Home: What to Compare

A chain door guard is supplemental hardware, not a primary lock. Compare the documented Schlage and Master Lock options by construction and fit, not unsupported strength claims.

A chain door guard is a secondary restraint, not a replacement for a suitable exterior lock. The available manufacturer information identifies two options—the Schlage Chain Door Guard and Master Lock 5150D—but does not establish that either is stronger in a forced-entry test. Choose by documented construction, finish, dimensions and fit, and keep your primary lock engaged.

What a chain door guard can—and cannot—do

A chain guard lets someone inside open a secured door a limited distance while the chain remains engaged. It is supplemental hardware: it does not replace a deadbolt or make a weak door or frame secure by itself. Master Lock gives the same general caution for its folding door bar, saying that bar is an additional measure to use with existing door hardware, not the primary exterior-door lock (Master Lock instructions).

The sources available for the two chain guards below describe selected product features, not independent tests of resistance to pulling, prying or forced entry. For that reason, “best” here means a documented option to consider—not a tested security ranking.

Compare the documented chain door guards

Product Documented construction and features Fit information What the evidence does not establish
Schlage Chain Door Guard Schlage describes a welded twist-link steel chain, added gauge thickness and included metal installation screws. Listed finishes are bright brass, satin nickel and aged bronze. Schlage lists the interior chain holder as 1-10/16 inches wide by 3/4 inch high, and the exterior door plate as 3-3/8 inches wide by 1-7/16 inches high. Check clearance and the current package instructions before purchase. Schlage product page No independent comparative forced-entry test result is stated on the cited product page.
Master Lock 5150D Chain Guard A Master Lock consumer product sheet identifies model 5150D as a chain guard with welded steel chain. The cited sheet does not provide dimensions or enough current fit detail for a door-specific recommendation. Master Lock 2015 product sheet The 2015 sheet documents the model and selected features; it does not establish current stock, unchanged specifications or independent forced-entry performance.

Schlage’s listed dimensions give a buyer specific clearance points to check. The Master Lock sheet is useful for identifying the 5150D and its chain construction, but supplies less information for confirming fit. Neither source supports claiming one model is stronger than the other.

How to choose for your door

  • Measure before buying: Compare the listed Schlage plate dimensions with the available space on the door and frame. For either product, confirm that the door’s swing, trim and nearby hardware will not obstruct the chain or plates.
  • Check the mounting surface: Confirm the door and frame can accept the supplied or specified fasteners. Schlage says metal screws are included for its guard; follow the instructions included with the specific product and do not assume every door material or construction is compatible.
  • Choose a finish based on the installation: Schlage lists bright brass, satin nickel and aged bronze. Finish is a visible selection criterion, not evidence of greater security.
  • Ask for comparable evidence if strength is the deciding factor: Look for independent, directly comparable test results for the complete guard and its installed mounting—not just claims about chain material. The cited sources do not provide those results.

Keep the primary lock and frame in view

A chain is only one part of a door’s security. Schlage’s general guidance recommends considering tested hardware standards such as BHMA grading when choosing a primary lock; that guidance is not a certification of either chain guard (Schlage: What really makes a lock secure?).

The frame and strike area matter to a deadbolt installation as well. Schlage explains that the strike plate is affixed to the jamb to receive the bolt and describes an optional reinforcement plate for strengthening the frame (Schlage deadbolt installation guide). This is general deadbolt context; it does not mean a chain guard reinforces the jamb. Install and maintain the primary lock and its supporting door and frame as a system.
