For many smart locks that use AA cells, fresh non-rechargeable alkaline batteries are the best-supported default—but the exact lock manual is the deciding authority. Battery size, quantity, and permitted chemistry vary by model, so check the label or manual before buying. A matching battery format alone does not mean every chemistry will work as intended.
Start with your lock’s exact battery requirements
Find the model number and consult its manual or manufacturer support page. Confirm the required battery size, number of cells, and approved chemistry before replacing batteries. For example, Schlage lists four AA alkaline batteries for some smart locks and a single 9-volt alkaline battery for certain keypad locks; those requirements are not interchangeable across its product line. Schlage’s residential battery guidance explains that type and quantity vary by model.
This guidance applies chiefly to electronic and smart locks with replaceable cells. Some locks use other sizes or proprietary rechargeable packs, and recommendations can differ by model and region.
Which battery chemistry should you use?
Alkaline: the common choice for compatible locks
Kwikset recommends standard non-rechargeable alkaline cells for the locks covered by its guidance; Schlage recommends high-quality alkaline cells for its listed models. Yale’s battery recommendations also specify alkaline for Yale smart and digital locks in New Zealand. Use alkaline only when your lock’s instructions call for or permit it, and replace the full set together with fresh cells.

Rechargeable batteries: check both compatibility and warnings
Do not assume rechargeables are a universally suitable or lower-cost substitute. Kwikset says its lock software and app are optimized for the discharge curve of alkaline batteries. Rechargeable cells tend to have a flatter discharge curve, which can make displayed charge percentages and low-battery alerts inaccurate. Schlage also discourages rechargeable batteries for the models covered by its residential guidance. Read the instructions for your exact lock before using them. Kwikset explains its rechargeable-battery warning.
Lithium batteries: matching size is not enough
Do not substitute lithium AA cells for alkaline AA cells unless your lock maker explicitly approves them. Schlage cautions against lithium batteries for the models in its battery guidance, and Yale’s New Zealand recommendations list lithium among the batteries to avoid for its covered locks. Chemistry matters even when the cells fit.

Do not mix batteries in a set
Yale advises against mixing battery types or brands. Replace all cells in the lock at the same time, and follow the manufacturer’s directions for the model and region. Yale’s recommendations are specifically for its smart and digital locks in New Zealand; they list Energizer MAX (not MAX Plus), Duracell Coppertop, Panasonic, and DMEGC, and identify batteries to avoid. That list should not be treated as a recommendation for other brands or regions.
How long do smart-lock batteries last?
Runtime depends on the lock and how often it is used. Manufacturer estimates for different models and usage assumptions are not a controlled comparison of brands or battery chemistries.

- Battery Type: Lithium AA Batteries, Voltage: 1.5V, Capacity: 3000mAh, Non-Rechargeable: Please do NOT charge the batteries.
- Use in high tech devices, such as blink outdoor camera, doorbell camera, trail camera, smart door lock, ring motion sensor, flameless candles. 3000mah battery capacity provides you with longer using time.
- Enegitech double A batteries are leak proof batteries, avoid the expensive equipment damage caused by battery leakage (Based on standard use)
- Performs in extreme temperatures from -40 degrees F to 140 degrees F to ensure reliable use for your outdoor blink camera in cold winter or hot summer.
- 10-Year Shelf Life: Last up to 10 years in storage, Enegitech lithium batteries are always your reliable backup power. (Stored in original package)
| Lock and source | Battery specification | Manufacturer runtime estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Schlage Arrive; Schlage support page dated May 29, 2025 | Four high-quality AA alkaline batteries | Up to six months |
| Applicable Kwikset lock; older Kwikset Battery FAQ document indexed circa 2018 | New, non-rechargeable alkaline batteries; the FAQ advises checking the applicable model | Over one year, based on 10 operations per day |
Schlage’s figure is an estimate for Arrive, not a general smart-lock guarantee. The older Kwikset FAQ’s estimate applies only to the lock covered by that document; check your current model manual before relying on it. Schlage Arrive battery information and Kwikset’s Battery FAQ provide the model-specific details.
How to choose and replace a set
- Identify the model. Use the model number on the lock or its documentation to find the correct manufacturer instructions.
- Match size, quantity, and chemistry. Buy only the cell format and chemistry the instructions specify. Do not infer compatibility from size alone.
- Replace the complete set. Use fresh cells together rather than mixing new and old batteries, brands, or types.
- Follow the lock’s replacement procedure. Use the manual’s steps and then check that the lock operates normally and reports battery status as expected.
If the manual calls for AA alkaline batteries, a fresh set of non-rechargeable alkaline AAs is a straightforward purchase. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that one battery brand lasts longer than another in a controlled comparison.

Why batteries may drain quickly—and what to check
A lock motor can use more power when it has to overcome friction. Kwikset identifies poor alignment between the bolt and strike plate as a common cause of faster battery drain: the motor works harder when the bolt does not move freely.
- Close the door and check that the bolt lines up with the strike plate without forcing it.
- If the door or bolt binds, correct the alignment or have the door hardware adjusted before assuming the batteries are faulty.
- On supported Kwikset models, turning off lock sounds and LED status can also reduce power use. These controls are not available on every lock.
See Kwikset’s battery-life troubleshooting guidance for the settings and checks applicable to its covered locks.

Emergency power is not a replacement-battery option
Some compatible Kwikset touchscreen locks can receive temporary power from a 9-volt alkaline battery placed against designated terminals. This is an emergency entry method for applicable models, not a general replacement battery for a smart lock. Consult your exact manual for whether the feature exists and how to use it safely.
