What NSF/ANSI 177 does—and does not—certify
NSF says shower filters attach to the pipe immediately before the showerhead and are certified only to reduce free available chlorine. Its consumer guidance states: “Shower filters attach directly to the pipe just in front of the homeowner’s showerhead and are certified to only reduce free available chlorine.” NSF’s water-treatment standards guidance distinguishes this from NSF/ANSI 53, a standard for filters certified to reduce contaminants with health effects.
A standard’s name or a certification logo is not proof that a product reduces every contaminant. The claim must identify the contaminant, and the certification must apply to the exact model and use. NSF also notes that there are no federal regulations governing residential water-treatment filters; voluntary standards and protocols set minimum safety and performance requirements.

How to evaluate a filter claim
- Identify the contaminant. “Heavy metals” is too broad to verify as a treatment claim. Determine whether the concern is lead or another specific metal.
- Check the exact model in the certifier’s official listing. Confirm the model name and the listed reduction claim rather than relying on marketing language or a logo alone.
- Match the certification to the application. A drinking-water filter certification does not establish that a shower filter treats the same contaminant in shower water.
- For chlorine-focused shopping, compare listing details. Check the certified claim, service-cycle capacity, replacement element, and listed flow rate for the exact model. A listed capacity is not a guarantee that every household will get the same service life under all water conditions.
If your concern is lead in drinking water
EPA’s consumer guidance explains how to identify point-of-use and pitcher filters certified to reduce lead in drinking water. It does not certify shower filters or establish that they reduce lead in shower water. Use the guidance for the drinking-water application it addresses, and verify a product’s exact lead claim with its certifier.
