Do not assume every Toshiba with a similar appearance has the same specification. Before checkout, match the listing’s exact suffix to its manual and verify cooking-output wattage, cavity dimensions, turntable diameter, sensor programs, cord and warranty.
Best budget and compact choice: BLACK+DECKER EM925AB9 class
A compact BLACK+DECKER such as the EM925AB9 suits a dorm, office, rental or small apartment where the priority is heating leftovers, drinks and frozen meals at low cost. Tom’s Guide describes the EM925AB9 as a sub-$100 option, but the current price and seller must be checked on Amazon.
The trade-off is normally less interior room and fewer refinements than a premium Panasonic or larger Toshiba. Measure the plate and the counter first; a low price is not a bargain if the door cannot open fully or the cavity will not accept your dishes.
Best premium countertop and inverter option: Panasonic Inverter/Genius Sensor
Panasonic models in the Inverter Technology and Genius Sensor families, including the NN-SN686S family, are aimed at buyers who regularly defrost, melt, simmer or reheat delicate foods. Inverter electronics are designed to provide more continuous reduced power instead of cycling full power on and off. That can make low-power cooking easier to control.
It is not proof of superior evenness: RTINGS specifically says inverter microwaves do not necessarily heat food more evenly. Food Network’s July snapshot placed a Panasonic inverter model around $260 and reported a 4.5/5 rating from approximately 10,500 ratings at that time. Treat both figures as temporary.
Best smart microwave: Toshiba ML-EM34P(SS)
The ML-EM34P(SS) is worth considering when your household already uses Alexa and will actually use hands-free presets. Food Network reports Alexa control when paired with an Echo device, app control, up to 23 preset menus, time- and weight-defrost, popcorn, reheat, mute, clock, timer and an eco mode that turns off the display while idle.
Rank #2
- Microwave output power 1000 watts, input power 1600 watts. External dimensions 20.6 x 14.6 x 11.8 inches (WxDxH); includes 12.4-inch glass turntable.
- Smart Sensor Technology for Optimal Cooking: Automatically adjusts cooking time and power based on food humidity, ensuring perfectly cooked meals every time. Say goodbye to overcooked or undercooked dishes.
- 6 Preset Menus: This countertop microwave features 6 preset menu options for popular foods like pizza, veggie, sensor reheat and more.
- 10 Unique Power Levels with clock and kitchen timer: Tailor your cooking power levels for greater culinary flexibility, making it an essential kitchen tool. Perfect for everything from deodorization to boiling liquids.
- Easy Defrost & One touch start: Defrost your frozen food by weight or by time. Quick access to start the microwave from 1 to 6 minutes cooking at full power.
You need compatible Alexa hardware, a working home Wi-Fi connection and any required account or app permissions. Check Toshiba’s manual and the live listing for regional-model differences. Voice control does not remove the need to supervise food, check temperature or clean spills. If you only reheat coffee, the smart premium buys little.
Best microwave, convection and air-fryer combination: Toshiba ML-EC42P(SS)
A combination model makes sense in a small kitchen without a toaster oven or separate air fryer. Food Network lists the ML-EC42P(SS) with microwave, convection and air-fry functions, auto-bake, auto-roast, sensor programs and a removable turntable. Its reported price was about $266, versus a stated regular price near $400.
Expect a larger, heavier appliance, more cleaning and a steeper learning curve. Air frying requires circulating hot air, room around the food and often preheating; a crowded cavity will not crisp well. A dedicated basket air fryer can produce larger or more consistent batches. Confirm that the exact listing includes the rack, tray or basket you need, and use metal only in modes and positions authorized by its manual.
Best over-the-range value: BLACK+DECKER EM044KB19
The EM044KB19 is relevant when you are replacing an existing OTR unit or reclaiming counter space. Food Network reports sensor or preset-style controls, low- and high-speed venting, turntable control, a child lock and a two-level cooking rack, with an approximate $300 price snapshot.
This is an installation project, not a countertop plug-in. Verify the nominal width, cabinet and wall construction, mounting bracket, electrical supply, cooktop clearance and whether the fan will recirculate or connect to an exterior duct. Installation cost can eliminate the apparent saving.
Best documented mainstream OTR alternative: GE JVM6175SKSS
GE identifies the JVM6175SKSS as a 1.7-cu.-ft. over-the-range sensor microwave and provides manuals, troubleshooting, parts, maintenance and installation information on its support page and installation page. GE’s support page, accessed in August 2026, describes production from June 2016 to the present; that does not guarantee current retail stock.

Choose the right form factor before comparing features
Countertop
Countertop units are the easiest replacement for renters, apartments, offices, guest suites and kitchens without a prepared hood opening. They usually cost less to install, but require open counter area and manufacturer-specified side, top and rear ventilation. They do not replace a range hood.
Over-the-range
OTR models reclaim counter space and add a vent fan, but they are more expensive and harder to install. Controls can be high for shorter users, and an integrated fan does not necessarily capture steam as well as a dedicated hood. RTINGS notes their higher typical cost, while Consumer Reports warns that nominal OTR capacity can overstate usable interior space.
Built-in
Built-ins suit custom cabinetry and a finished appearance. Never put a countertop model in a cabinet or over a range unless its manual and approved trim or installation kit explicitly allow that arrangement.
Capacity: measure dishes, not just cubic feet
Use these categories as a starting point, then check the actual cavity and turntable:
- 0.5–0.9 cu. ft.: mugs, small plates, frozen meals and light-duty rooms.
- 1.0–1.2 cu. ft.: most households and standard dinner plates.
- 1.3–1.6 cu. ft.: larger dishes and family portions.
- 1.7–2.2 cu. ft.: large cookware, families, OTR and combination appliances.
Before ordering, measure available width, depth including rear clearance and door swing, height, outlet position, the largest dish’s height and width, and the turntable diameter. A cubic-foot label cannot tell you whether a casserole or 12-inch pizza will fit.

Wattage: a useful target, not a quality guarantee
U.S. consumer models commonly provide about 700–1,200 watts of cooking output. Around 1,000 watts is a practical general-purpose target. A 700–900-watt model can reheat effectively but may need longer times than package directions assume; 1,100–1,200 watts can shorten heating for large portions but may cost more and place greater demands on the circuit.
Compare cooking output, not electrical input. Controls, cavity shape, sensor calibration, noise and usability often matter more than a modest wattage difference. RTINGS’ countertop testing treats power as a speed factor, not a guarantee of more even heating.

Sensor cooking
A humidity sensor estimates steam released by food and adjusts time or power. It can reduce guesswork for leftovers, vegetables, potatoes and frozen foods. It is not a doneness guarantee: quantity, shape, container, starting temperature and covering all affect results. Follow the model’s instructions about venting and standing time.
Inverter power control
Choose inverter technology for smoother low-power behavior, defrosting and delicate cooking. Do not buy it solely on a promise of even heating; independent testing does not support that blanket claim.
Useful convenience controls
- Mute: valuable in bedrooms, offices and early-morning kitchens.
- Quick-start keys: save time for routine one- or two-minute heating.
- Child lock: useful where children can reach the controls.
- Keep warm: helpful when serving is delayed, but follow food-safety limits.
- Turntable on/off: useful for oversized or rectangular dishes if the manual permits it.
Features that may not justify the premium
- Wi-Fi and voice control if you never use remote presets.
- Convection or air fry if you already own a capable oven or air fryer.
- Oversized capacity for a one-person household with small dishes.
- Decorative finishes that do not change cooking performance.
Installation and safety checklist
Countertop setup
- Read the exact manual and leave every specified side, top and rear clearance.
- Place the oven on a level surface that can support its weight and keep ventilation openings clear.
- Use an accessible, appropriately rated outlet; do not rely on an unsuitable extension arrangement.
- Ensure the door opens fully without striking cabinets and do not place the oven over a range or other heat-producing appliance unless expressly approved.
The Toshiba ML-EM34P(SS) manual illustrates why countertop installation warnings matter.
OTR setup
- Confirm the usual 30-inch nominal width and the actual cabinet opening.
- Check wall construction, mounting bracket location and dedicated electrical requirements.
- Decide between recirculating and externally ducted ventilation; verify duct size and route.
- Measure cooktop-to-microwave clearance and confirm the existing hardware is reusable.
- Use professional installation when wiring, cabinetry or ductwork is uncertain.
Radiation, doors and interlocks
The FDA says compliant ovens are generally safe when used as directed. U.S. rules limit leakage to 5 milliwatts per square centimeter measured about two inches from the surface and require interlocks that stop microwave generation when the door opens. Stop using an oven with a bent door, damaged hinges, latches or seals, a door that will not close firmly, or any unit that appears to operate with its door open.

Metal, cookware and empty operation
In ordinary microwave mode, avoid metal containers, metallic trim, twist ties and foil unless the manual specifically permits an accessory. Metal can reflect energy, arc or damage the cavity. Convection or combination modes may allow specified racks or cookware. GE’s dish and utensil guidance and Panasonic’s safety guidance explain the model-specific exceptions; Panasonic advises keeping approved metal items at least one inch from cavity walls where instructed.
For GE’s general screening test, place water in a cup beside the dish, run on high for one minute, and reject the dish if it becomes hot while the water remains hot. This does not override manufacturer instructions. Do not run an empty oven unless the manual expressly authorizes a particular test; Panasonic warns that empty operation can heat the cavity abnormally and damage the magnetron.
Superheated water and cleaning
Plain water can become superheated and erupt when moved or disturbed. Follow the manual, avoid excessive heating times and handle the cup carefully. Clean the cavity, door edge, seals, turntable and roller ring with water and mild detergent; avoid steel wool, scouring pads and abrasive cleaners. The FDA’s safety guidance covers these practices.
Amazon buying checklist
- Match the exact model number, suffix, finish and U.S. voltage to the manual.
- Check “Sold by” and “Ships from,” and distinguish new from renewed or third-party stock.
- Verify dimensions, wattage, turntable, rack, tray, basket and filters included.
- Read warranty, service and return terms, including possible restocking or return-shipping costs.
- Confirm whether the price is a coupon, membership offer or limited-time promotion.
- Inspect delivery for dents and test the door, turntable and controls during the return window.
- Do not treat aggregate ratings as a durability test; reviews can combine colors, capacities, revisions and sellers.
Troubleshooting common complaints
Powerful microwave, cold center
Microwaves heat outer portions directly and the center largely by conduction; they do not cook thick food from the inside out. Arrange food in a ring or thinner layer, stir or rotate when directed, allow standing time and check that the turntable and roller ring work correctly. The FDA explains this heating behavior.

Sensor program overcooked food
The portion may have been smaller or drier than the preset expects, covered incorrectly, blocked from venting or left without standing time. Use manual time and power for unusual quantities and follow the specific sensor instructions.
Disappointing air-fry results
Leave space around food, preheat when required and cook in smaller batches. Combination cavities trade basket area for microwave capacity; a dedicated air fryer can be better for frequent, large batches.
Poor OTR ventilation
Check whether the unit recirculates, whether its charcoal filter is present and clean, and whether ductwork is blocked or undersized. A fan rating does not equal capture performance from a dedicated hood.
Sparking
Stop the cycle and inspect for foil, metallic trim, twist ties, food debris, a damaged waveguide cover or an incorrectly placed rack. Clean the cavity and consult the manual. Persistent arcing needs manufacturer or qualified-service advice.

Excessive noise
Cooling, vent, convection and air-fry fans, the turntable motor and normal power cycling can all make sound. Use independent noise evaluations such as RTINGS’ testing when noise is a deciding factor.
