An all-in-one laser printer is a strong fit when your everyday work is text-heavy: contracts, estimates, invoices, forms, schoolwork, and records that need printing, scanning, or copying. For a home office or small business, prioritize the document workflow you actually use—especially an automatic document feeder (ADF) and two-sided scanning—rather than choosing by print speed alone. If you print photos, need borderless or wide-format output, or want inexpensive high-volume color, compare ink-tank printers before buying.
For a compact monochrome office, consider the Brother MFC-L2740DW. For color documents, compare the Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw and models such as the Canon MF753Cdw or Brother MFC-L3765CDW. A busier office may benefit from the Brother MFC-L8930CDW’s faster rated printing and duplex scanning. U.S. product availability and prices can change; any Consumer Reports prices below are guide prices, not confirmed retail prices on August 18, 2026.
What an all-in-one laser printer includes
“All-in-one” or “multifunction printer” (MFP) usually means a machine that prints, scans, and copies. Some models also fax. Beyond those basics, features vary: an ADF feeds loose pages for scanning or copying, automatic duplex printing handles both sides of a sheet, and duplex scanning captures both sides of an original. Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, mobile printing, and scan-to-email or network-folder features also differ by model. Do not assume a printer has fax, an ADF, or duplex scanning just because it is an MFP.
A flatbed scanner is useful for books, receipts, IDs, or delicate originals. An ADF is more convenient for a stack of pages. For double-sided records, check whether the ADF scans both sides automatically. Single-pass duplex scanning captures both sides in one pass; it is generally preferable for recurring batches. Duplex printing and duplex scanning are separate capabilities.

Laser or inkjet: which fits your work?
| Need | Better starting point | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp text, forms, invoices, and contracts | Laser | Higher purchase cost or bulk on some models |
| Occasional document printing | Laser | Toner avoids the printhead-clogging issue associated with inkjets that sit unused |
| High-quality photos or borderless images | Photo-oriented inkjet | Liquid-ink systems may need more attention if left unused |
| Frequent color printing at low cost | Compare ink-tank models with color laser | Ink tanks can be economical for color volume, but they are not laser printers |
| Wide-format output | Suitable inkjet | Most office laser MFPs are designed for standard document sizes |
RTINGS notes that laser printers are a good choice for occasional document printing, while photo-focused inkjets generally offer better color gamut and detail. Color laser can produce polished charts, logos, and proposals, but it should not be treated as photo-printer quality. Laser models can also be larger and more expensive, and color machines use multiple toner supplies plus drums or other consumables. See RTINGS’ all-in-one printer recommendations and its laser-printer testing.
How much will you print?
Use these as planning bands, not manufacturer guarantees:
- Occasional: fewer than 100 pages per month.
- Moderate home office: about 100–500 pages per month.
- Busy home office or small office: about 500–1,500 pages per month.
- Workgroup: more than 1,500 pages per month or several regular users.
Brother describes some home-office and small-office color laser models as suitable for up to five users and approximately 1,500 pages per month; that guidance is not a promise that every model will suit every workload. A recommended monthly volume is practical usage guidance. A maximum duty cycle is a ceiling, not a healthy target. Toner yield is calculated using standardized coverage assumptions, so your actual page count will vary with document coverage and print settings. See Brother’s U.S. color laser all-in-one category.

Compact monochrome: Brother MFC-L2740DW
This model’s listed combination of a 35-page ADF, duplex printing, and single-pass duplex scanning and copying can be more valuable than a higher speed rating if you routinely process double-sided paperwork. Its 32-ppm figure and 250-sheet tray are manufacturer specifications; rated speed does not describe every duplex or graphics job. Check whether the U.S. configuration you are considering includes the fax capability you need, and verify toner yield, replacement prices, and scanner paper-size support on the Brother MFC-L2740DW product page.
Color documents: Canon Color imageCLASS MF665Cdw
RTINGS identifies the MF665Cdw as a leading upper-midrange all-in-one and reports up to 26 ppm, an ADF, and single-pass duplex scanning. It suits a small office that needs color charts and proposals but does not need a large workgroup machine. It is not the right pick for photo-heavy printing; calculate toner and imaging-unit costs before purchase. Check current U.S. availability on Canon’s MF665Cdw product page and performance context in RTINGS’ all-in-one comparison.

Heavier color use: Brother MFC-L8930CDW
RTINGS’ laser recommendations identify this as a strong choice for demanding document work, with up to 34 ppm, legal-size flatbed scanning, and single-pass duplex scanning. The trade-off is a larger machine better suited to a home office than occasional household printing. RTINGS describes its document output as sharp but its photos as dull and lacking detail. Check the Brother MFC-L8930CDW page for current status and specifications, and see RTINGS’ laser-printer observations.
Batch-scanning workgroup: Brother MFC-L8905CDW
The 70-page ADF and stated two-sided scan speed of up to 58 images per minute make this a workflow candidate for offices that regularly digitize stacks of double-sided records. Brother lists business-oriented protocols including IPP/IPPS, LDAP, HTTPS, SMB/CIFS, FTP, and SNMP on its MFC-L8905CDW specification page. There is a status conflict worth resolving before purchase: the manufacturer page remains accessible, while RTINGS’ 2026 update says the model was removed from its recommendations as discontinued or replaced. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide gives a historical guide price of $700 and score of 68; neither that guide price nor a product page alone establishes current retail availability.
Value candidates: Canon MF753Cdw and Brother MFC-L3765CDW
Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide lists the Canon MF753Cdw at $430 with an overall score of 74, and the Brother MFC-L3765CDW at $399 with a score of 71. These are reported guide prices and scores, not live prices or original tests by this publication. Before choosing either, confirm replacement toner costs, ADF and duplex-scanning features, paper capacity, and current support. See the Canon MF753Cdw page, the Brother MFC-L3765CDW page, and the Consumer Reports 2026 Buying Guide.

How to compare total ownership cost
The purchase price is only one part of the cost. For each finalist, estimate toner use at your own print mix and include drums or imaging units, waste-toner containers, maintenance parts, paper, electricity, and any subscription fee. Starter cartridges may have a different yield from replacement cartridges. Check whether high-yield toner is available and whether the printer can continue printing in black when color toner is empty. Compare third-party toner compatibility and any warranty implications, too.
Two-year ownership estimate: printer price + toner used + drums or imaging units + maintenance parts + paper + subscription fees − rebates.
For a useful comparison, estimate the same period and workload for each model—for example, 100 black pages per month, 500 mixed pages per month, or 1,000 color pages per month. The available evidence does not establish current cartridge prices and yields for all shortlisted models, so an exact per-page or two-year total would be misleading. A low sticker price is not proof of low running cost.

Features to check before buying
Scanning and paper handling
- Confirm ADF capacity and whether it scans one side or both sides automatically.
- Check that the scanner supports the page sizes and document types you use, including legal-size pages if needed.
- Compare the main tray, bypass or multipurpose tray, number of trays, and supported paper size.
- Check envelope and laser-compatible label handling in the model specifications.
Print speed and capacity
Compare black and color speed, simplex versus duplex output, first-page time, warm-up, and rated paper capacity. A 30-ppm rating does not mean a mixed-color, two-sided job or first page will finish at that rate. Manufacturer figures may use different test methods, so do not treat cross-brand ppm claims as directly equivalent. For example, HP’s U.S. MFP listings describe the LaserJet MFP M234sdw as up to 30 black ppm, with an ADF, duplex printing, 150-sheet input, and dual-band wireless; use the HP U.S. multifunction listings to check the exact model configuration.
Connectivity, software, and security
Check that the model supports the connection and operating systems your household or office uses: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, Apple AirPrint, Mopria, Windows and macOS, and Android or iOS apps as needed. For scanning, verify whether it can send to email, a network folder, or cloud services, and whether OCR is included or requires separate software. Wi-Fi Direct can help when a normal network is unavailable; Ethernet can be a useful stable connection for a shared office.
For business use, look for the specific controls you need rather than relying on a general “secure” label: HTTPS or IPPS, secure print or PIN release, user access controls, LDAP authentication, and supported scan-to-SMB, FTP, or email workflows. Change default administrator credentials, install firmware updates, secure the Wi-Fi network, and avoid exposing the printer directly to the internet. Before enabling cloud scanning, check where files are uploaded and the provider’s retention and deletion terms. HP identifies dynamic security on several current U.S. models; buyers should review consumable-compatibility restrictions on the exact product listing before purchase.
Placement and daily use
Measure the printer body and allow room for ventilation, open trays, ADF access, cartridge or drum replacement, door clearance, and cables. A large color laser can be heavy: place it on a stable, load-rated desk or stand, not a flimsy shelf. Fan noise may be unwelcome in a bedroom or quiet work area. Check the weight and dimensions on the manufacturer’s specification page before arranging delivery.

Who should skip a laser MFP?
- Choose a photo-oriented inkjet if detailed photos, borderless prints, or art are central to your work.
- Compare an ink tank if high-volume color economy matters more than laser’s document strengths.
- Look elsewhere if you need wide-format printing.
- Reconsider a large color model if you have limited space, a weak shelf, or a noise-sensitive room.
- Check consumable policies first if you are unwilling to buy original toner or accept cartridge-authentication restrictions.
A practical shortlist process
- Define the job: estimate monthly pages and the share that is black versus color.
- Define the workflow: decide whether you need fax, an ADF, automatic duplex printing, and single-pass duplex scanning.
- Set capacity and connection needs: choose paper capacity, page sizes, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and required mobile or office protocols.
- Compare ownership cost: use replacement yields and current U.S. supply prices, adding drums and maintenance parts rather than comparing printer prices alone.
- Verify the exact model: confirm current stock, warranty, consumables, features, and support on the manufacturer’s U.S. page before ordering.
