The best “air freshener” for cat urine odor is an enzymatic urine cleaner applied to the contaminated surface. It breaks down urine compounds instead of merely covering them. After the source has been cleaned and dried, an air purifier with a substantial activated-carbon filter can reduce residual odor in the room. Fragrance sprays alone do not remove cat urine from carpet, padding, upholstery, wood or subfloor.

Blot fresh urine before it dries
Press absorbent towels onto a fresh puddle and remove as much liquid as possible. Do not begin by flooding a fresh puddle, because excess liquid can drive contamination deeper.

Apply an enzyme cleaner deeply enough
Use a product labeled for cat urine and apply enough to reach the depth the urine reached. Follow the label’s required saturation and dwell time. Treat the entire affected area, not only the visible center.
For old urine in padding or subfloor, repeated applications may be necessary. Severely contaminated porous material may need replacement.

Allow complete drying
Air-dry the area whenever the label permits. Keep cats and other pets away while the product is wet, and prevent licking. ASPCA Poison Control notes that most enzyme-based cleaners tend to cause mild stomach upset if ingested, so pets should return only after treated areas are dry.

Use activated carbon for remaining room odor
If the room still smells after the source is treated, run a portable purifier with an activated-carbon stage. EPA guidance specifically recommends activated carbon or another gas-removing filter for gaseous pollutants. Replace the filter as directed; saturated carbon becomes less useful.

If inappropriate urination continues, arrange a veterinary evaluation. Cleaning products and air purifiers do not treat urinary disease, stress or litter-box problems.

Choosing an enzyme cleaner for cat urine
Check the chemistry claim
Look for explicit enzyme- or bacteria-based urine-odor claims. ASPCA advises cleaning accidents thoroughly with an enzymatic cleanser designed to neutralize pet odors. Veterinarian-reviewed PetMD guidance also recommends enzyme-based cleaners and advises avoiding ammonia-based products.
Match the cleaner to the surface
Read the label for carpet, upholstery, sealed flooring, unfinished wood, laundry or other materials. Test an inconspicuous area when discoloration or finish damage is possible.

Different formulas require different amounts and dwell times. A quick mist may not reach urine below carpet fibers. Do not assume that a product is interchangeable with another cleaner.

Products commonly named by humane-society guidance
The Humane Society of Missouri identifies Anti-Icky Poo, Outright Stain and Odor Eliminator, Nature’s Miracle, Urine Off and Urine Erase as enzyme or bacteria products, and identifies Cat Off as a species-specific odor counteractant. Formulas and directions can change, so verify the current label before use; these names are not an objective performance ranking.

It may reduce odor in the air, but it will not remove the urine source. Choose a purifier with a substantial activated-carbon stage for gases. HEPA filtration is useful for particles such as dust and dander, but EPA states that the CADR rating system is for particles only. CADR should not be treated as an odor-removal score.
Compare carbon quantity or media, replacement-filter availability and cost, noise and the manufacturer’s stated room coverage. No universal room-size or percentage odor-removal result establishes one purifier as best for every room.

Safety rules
- Do not use ammonia-based products for cat urine cleanup; ammonia can be inappropriate for this odor problem.
- Never combine cleaners unless the product label explicitly permits it.
- Ventilate as directed on the label.
- Keep pets away from wet cleaner and prevent licking.
- Use caution on unfinished wood, natural stone, painted surfaces and fabrics that may react to liquid.
