If you have a suitable exterior door or a properly installed wall vent, a portable AC may work with a compatible vent kit. If there is no route outdoors, a conventional portable AC cannot effectively cool the room; a fan or, in suitable dry conditions, an evaporative cooler can improve comfort but is not equivalent to air conditioning.
Can I use a portable air conditioner in a room without a window?
Yes, if you can route its exhaust outdoors. A portable AC removes heat from the room and sends that heat outside through an exhaust hose. A suitable exterior door, an approved exterior-wall opening, or another properly designed outlet may substitute for a window. Honeywell explains that hot air must be exhausted outdoors for effective cooling in its portable air conditioner support FAQ; De’Longhi also describes venting through an external wall in its installation guidance.
If the hose ends in another room, hallway, ceiling void, or other indoor space, the heat remains inside the building. That does not solve the cooling problem. Before choosing a unit, determine whether an exhaust route can pass through the building envelope and comply with the AC manufacturer’s instructions.
Does a portable AC need to be vented?
Yes, during cooling. The exhaust hose must carry hot air outdoors. A portable unit without an outdoor exhaust path is not a practical substitute for a window AC, even if it is advertised as compact or “ventless.” A hose-free mini cooler may move air or use water evaporation, but it does not refrigerate a sealed room like a conventional AC.

Which options work when there is no window?
| Option | When it may fit | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Portable AC with exhaust hose | A suitable exterior door, wall opening, or other approved outlet is available. | Exhaust must reach outdoors, and the vent kit must fit the opening and specific AC. |
| Evaporative cooler | The air is dry and the room can be cross-ventilated. | It adds humidity and does not cool by refrigerant; performance depends strongly on humidity and airflow. |
| Fan | You want air movement and personal comfort. | It circulates existing air; it does not remove heat from the room. |
| Permanent exterior-wall solution | The room can be modified and a suitable exterior wall is available. | It requires an opening to outdoors; feasibility, permissions, and installation details depend on the building. |
Portable AC through an exterior door
A sliding exterior door may provide a route for an exhaust hose if a compatible vent kit can seal the opening. Some doors require a wider kit than a standard window panel. Check the unit instructions, the opening’s dimensions, hose reach, and how the panel seals before buying; a generic kit should not be assumed to fit. Honeywell discusses door venting and compatible kit considerations in its portable AC guidance.
Permanent vent through an exterior wall
An exterior-wall route can be a long-term alternative when the room is suitable for modification. The outlet must be designed for the AC and installed so exhaust is discharged outdoors. Because wall construction, building permissions, and installation requirements vary, confirm feasibility with the manufacturer’s instructions and, where needed, a qualified contractor. Do not vent into an adjacent occupied room.

Evaporative cooler in dry conditions
An evaporative cooler uses water evaporation rather than a refrigerant cycle. It adds moisture to the air, so it needs a way for humid air to escape, such as cross-ventilation. Honeywell says its coolers work best at relative humidity of about 60% or less. The same manufacturer gives a potential reduction of up to about 15°F in very hot, dry conditions; that is a manufacturer-stated possibility, not a guaranteed result for a particular room or an independent test. Honeywell also gives airflow examples of 200 CFM for about 50 sq. ft. and 2,000 CFM for about 500 sq. ft.; these are examples, and actual performance depends on heat and humidity. See its evaporative cooler FAQ.
Fan for air movement
A fan can make occupants feel more comfortable by moving air across the body, but it does not lower the room’s heat load. Consider airflow, placement, and noise; it is a comfort measure, not air conditioning.

How to choose a portable AC for a small windowless room
- Confirm an outdoor exhaust route. Identify an exterior door, suitable wall opening, or other approved outlet. Verify that the proposed setup follows the AC instructions and actually discharges outside.
- Measure the room and its conditions. Record floor area and ceiling height, then account for insulation, direct sun, open doorways, occupants, and heat-producing appliances. “Small room” alone is not enough to determine capacity.
- Match capacity to the exact unit guidance. Use the manufacturer’s sizing guidance for the room and its conditions rather than relying only on a listing’s room-size label. No universal capacity is reliable without those details.
- Check the vent kit and hose layout. Confirm opening dimensions, kit compatibility, hose reach, permitted hose length and placement, and the seal around the outlet. Do not assume an extension hose will work without affecting installation or performance.
- Compare operating and installation requirements. Check energy-efficiency figures such as EER or CEER when supplied, noise, electrical requirements, and how condensate is handled or drained.
Single-hose or dual-hose?
Hose configuration is one factor, not a substitute for a workable outdoor vent. Honeywell’s UK manufacturer guidance describes dual-hose units as potentially preferable for larger or more demanding spaces because outside intake air is drawn separately from exhaust air. It describes single-hose units as an option for smaller, better-insulated rooms. This is manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparative test; check the specific unit’s requirements and suitability for your room. See Honeywell’s portable AC FAQ.

If there is no way to send heat outdoors, do not buy a conventional portable AC expecting it to cool the room effectively. Consider a fan if air movement is the goal. Consider an evaporative cooler only if conditions are dry enough and the room can be ventilated; because it adds moisture, it is not a suitable AC replacement in every climate or room. If actual air conditioning is required, the room needs an appropriately designed route for heat to leave the building.
