No awning is storm-proof. The safest choice for a windy site is one with a published wind-resistance declaration for the exact model and size, installed with fixings suited to the building, and operated according to its manual. A declared wind class is not a guarantee that an awning will withstand every gust or mounting condition.
If you are asking how much wind a retractable awning can handle, whether to retract it in strong winds, or whether a wind sensor is worthwhile, the practical answer is to follow the chosen model’s limit—and retract earlier when gusts are violent or irregular.
How much wind can a retractable awning handle?
There is no safe universal wind-speed limit for all awnings. Limits depend on the product, its size and projection, the mounting surface, and the manufacturer’s operating instructions. Ask for the declaration and installation manual for the exact model you are considering; a general claim such as “wind-rated” is not enough to establish how it will perform at your home.
For example, Paramondo’s August 2022 Curve 2000 cassette awning manual says that model meets Wind Resistance Class 2 and must be retracted from wind force 5. The same manual reproduces this DIN EN 13561 class table:

| Wind resistance class | Wind speed shown in the Paramondo manual | Dynamic pressure shown in the Paramondo manual |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Below 28 km/h | Below 40 N/m² |
| 1 | 28 km/h | 40 N/m² |
| 2 | 38 km/h | 70 N/m² |
| 3 | 49 km/h | 110 N/m² |
These are class-table values in one manufacturer’s manual, not independent measurements of wind at a particular property or a promise that another awning will tolerate those speeds. Litex Promo’s operating instructions also list maximum speeds of 19, 28, 38 and 49 km/h across resistance classes, while referring to EN 13561:2015. Use the figures only in the context of the named product documentation and its stated conditions.
Do not treat a class threshold as a target for leaving the canopy open until that speed is reached. Wind can arrive in gusts, and exposure, structure, size and installation all affect the risk. Beaufort force references in a manual are not a direct reading of conditions at every home.
What type of awning is best for a windy area?
For a typical retractable patio awning, choose by documented limits and installation suitability—not by fabric weight or “heavy-duty” wording alone. Compare the following before purchase:

- High-Quality Material: Our retractable side awning is made from 180g/m² high-density polyester fabric with a PU coating, providing excellent waterproof performance and tensile strength. It effectively blocks wind and rain, resists UV rays (UV30+), extends its lifespan, and ensures stable shelter for outdoor activities. Note: Please store the side awning away during windy or stormy weather to avoid damage.
- The declared wind class for the exact model and size or projection.
- The manufacturer’s operating limit and its advice for gusts and changing weather.
- The specified mounting surface, brackets and fixings, and whether an installer considers them suitable for your building.
- Whether the design is a folding-arm canopy or a supported system with front posts.
- For a motorized unit, sensor compatibility and a way to retract it during a power outage.
- Whether you can reliably retract it before hazardous weather arrives.
Retractable folding-arm awnings
These provide adjustable shade but rely on their arms, brackets and mounting structure while extended. Their declared class and operating instructions apply to a particular product and installation context; do not assume that a rating transfers to a different size or mounting arrangement.

Supported pergola-style awnings
A supported pergola-style awning has front posts, unlike a typical folding-arm canopy. Samson Awnings, an installer and supplier, describes supported systems as more stable in wind. That is qualitative supplier guidance, not a universal structural rating or independent comparison. Ask for documented wind performance and a site-specific design if the location is exposed.
Fixed roof systems
Samson Awnings suggests fixed roof systems for greater all-weather reliability, but “fixed” does not automatically mean safe in high winds. For any permanent canopy or roof, seek a site assessment and documented structural wind rating appropriate to the building and location.

- UPF 80+ Fabric: This manual retractable awning uses 180 g/m² polyester with PU coating. It provides level 4 colorfastness to resist fading, while UPF 80+ shields against sunlight and reduces heat. The water-resistant canopy blocks light rain for comfort
- 43"-59" Adjustable Side Poles: Our 98" retractable awning features adjustable side poles. It allows flexible shade coverage for windows, balconies, or patios. The twist-lock design is more stable than push-button types, reducing wobbling for reliable use
- 0°-90° Adjustable Angle: The retractable patio awning supports flexible angle adjustment from 0° to 90° using the included crank. The side poles adjust to changing sunlight, reducing glare and direct exposure. It can also function as a privacy screen
- Steel & Aluminum Structure: This retractable awning for patio is built with a high-strength steel frame and aluminum roller tube. It withstands level 2 wind. Retract during severe weather and install with 2 people. Use ropes for stability on balconies
- Adjustable Pole Height: Our retractable sun awning features adjustable poles from 82.7"-122" to fit different spaces. The no-drill design reduces wall damage. Adjustable feet and top/bottom non-slip pads improve stability and allow use on uneven ground
Why do mounting and installation matter?
A product’s declared performance may not describe the installed system. WOUNDWO’s February 2023 jointed-arm awning instructions state: “Once installed, the mounting surface may result in a lower performance level.” The manual also gives model- and projection-specific information, underscoring why a general rating is not enough to choose a product for a particular installation.
Paramondo’s manual says the fixing material must match the fitting base and assigns the fitter responsibility for checking that base. Have a qualified installer assess the substrate and specify appropriate fixings; a generic bracket or improvised tie-down is not a substitute for that assessment.
Should you retract an awning in strong winds?
Yes—retract it at the limit in the exact product manual, and do so sooner when conditions are gusty or changing. Litex Promo advises rolling an awning immediately during violent, irregular gusts. If the weather is deteriorating, do not wait for a stated maximum speed to be reached.

Samson Awnings identifies a moving or bouncing front bar as a visual sign that wind load may be too high, and advises retracting manual awnings when they are not in use or when leaving the property. Treat that as additional supplier guidance, not a substitute for the manufacturer’s instructions.
Solera by Lippert says its retractable awnings are not designed for sustained heavy downpours, hurricanes or tropical storms and should be fully retracted in those conditions. This is the brand’s product guidance, rather than an independent performance study; it supports a conservative approach to severe weather.
Are wind sensors worth it?
A wind sensor can help a motorized awning respond automatically, but it is an aid rather than a reason to stop monitoring the weather. WOUNDWO recommends automatic wind monitoring for motorized units. Litex Promo’s instructions warn: “the wind control unit does not release us from being attentive,” and advise watching the weather and retracting before a weather breakdown.

Quick Recap
What to ask before buying
- Request the installation manual and wind declaration for the exact model, size and projection.
- Ask the manufacturer or supplier for the model’s operating limit and its instructions for gusts, rain and severe weather.
- Have a qualified installer assess the mounting surface and specify compatible brackets and fixings.
- For a motorized model, verify sensor compatibility and an emergency method of retraction during a power outage.
- If your site is persistently exposed, compare supported or fixed designs using documented, site-appropriate structural ratings rather than general claims about stability.
