The best awning cleaner depends on the fabric and the stain. For Sunbrella shade fabric, Sunbrella recommends water and mild soap or Sunbrella Clean for routine dirt, Sunbrella Clean for water-based spills, and Sunbrella Extract for oil-based spills. For mildew or stubborn stains, Sunbrella Renew or a carefully diluted bleach-and-soap solution may be appropriate. Those recommendations are specific to Sunbrella shade fabrics—not a universal recipe for vinyl, acrylic, or other awning materials—so check the awning or fabric maker’s care label first.
Choose a cleaner for the awning material and stain
Before using any awning fabric cleaner, identify the fabric and check its manufacturer’s instructions. A cleaner that is suitable for one fabric or coating may damage another. Sunbrella’s product guidance applies to its own shade fabrics; for example, Sunbrella Horizon is a separate vinyl-coated product with its own cautions, including avoiding solvent-based cleaners. See Sunbrella Horizon cleaning guidance.
| Cleaning need | Sunbrella shade-fabric guidance | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Routine dirt | Water and mild soap or Sunbrella Clean; use a soft-bristle brush, rinse thoroughly, and air-dry. | For Sunbrella shade fabric only. Check other materials’ care instructions. |
| Water-based spill | Sunbrella recommends Sunbrella Clean. | Confirm compatibility with the specific fabric. |
| Oil-based spill | Sunbrella recommends Sunbrella Extract. | Follow the awning system’s instructions, including any prompt blotting or absorption guidance. |
| Mildew or stubborn stain | Sunbrella identifies Sunbrella Renew or a diluted bleach-and-soap solution as options. | Consider coated backsides, nearby materials, runoff, and the fabric’s age. |
| Restore water and stain repellency | Sunbrella recommends 303 Fabric Guard in the United States after repeated thorough cleaning or years of exposure. | Use only when appropriate for the fabric and follow the treatment label. |
Sunbrella describes its own cleaner options and their intended uses in About Sunbrella Cleaners. A product name alone does not establish compatibility with every awning.
Clean Sunbrella shade fabric for routine dirt
For general or light cleaning while the fabric remains on the frame, Sunbrella recommends this sequence:
#1 Best Overall
- Deep‑Cleaning Formula for RV Awnings: Effectively lifts stains, dirt, tree sap, and road grime to refresh your awning’s appearance.
- Safe for Multiple Awning Materials: Works on vinyl, acrylic, nylon, and fabric awnings—ideal for RVs, pop‑ups, and tents.
- Restores a Like‑New Look: Helps revive faded or weathered awnings, improving overall outdoor living space appeal.
- Professional‑Strength Performance: Designed for tough outdoor buildup while remaining easy to use during routine cleaning.
- Large 32 fl oz Bottle: Provides ample cleaning power for full‑size RV awnings and multiple applications.
- Brush away loose dirt.
- Hose down the fabric.
- Prepare water with mild soap or use Sunbrella Clean.
- Scrub with a soft-bristle brush and allow the solution to soak.
- Rinse thoroughly until the soap is removed.
- Air-dry the fabric.
Sunbrella says monthly rinsing with clean water helps keep dirt from becoming deeply embedded. Its care guidance also says that in most environments a thorough cleaning will be needed every two to three years; these are manufacturer recommendations for Sunbrella shade fabric, not a universal schedule for awnings. Depending on the fabric’s age, retreatment may not be needed after light cleaning. See Sunbrella’s shade-fabric cleaning instructions.
Remove mildew or stubborn stains with care
Sunbrella explains that its fabric itself does not promote mildew growth; mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances left on the fabric. For a persistent stain, Sunbrella identifies Sunbrella Renew or diluted bleach as possible approaches. Its help page explains the mildew options at How do I remove mold and mildew from my fabric?

Heavy cleaning with diluted bleach and soap
For stubborn stains on Sunbrella shade fabric, the manufacturer’s heavy-cleaning directions specify one cup of bleach and one-quarter cup of mild soap per gallon of clean water. Let the solution soak for up to 15 minutes, brush with a soft-bristle brush, rinse thoroughly, and air-dry. Repeat if necessary. Follow the directions for the specific fabric: Sunbrella says not to brush the coated back side of Sunbrella Plus during this heavy-cleaning step.
- Protect adjacent fabrics and surfaces: bleach can discolor non-Sunbrella fabrics.
- Rinse thoroughly after cleaning.
- Do not use bleach where runoff could affect a body of water or another sensitive environment.
- Bleach and fabric age may affect sewing thread and other components.
- Stain removal is not guaranteed, particularly when spills are not treated promptly.
Sunbrella says bleach cleaning requires retreatment for water and stain resistance. If you use a retreatment product, confirm it is suitable for the fabric and follow its label, including drying directions. In the United States, Sunbrella recommends 303 Fabric Guard to refresh repellency after repeated thorough cleaning or years of exposure.

A professional may be a practical option for a large awning or a stain that is difficult to remove. Ask whether the cleaner has experience with the exact fabric and understands its cleaning limits, coated sides, and any post-cleaning retreatment requirements. Sunbrella suggests considering professional cleaning for large or difficult jobs, but does not endorse a particular provider.
