For most buyers, the BenQ HT4550i is the safest projector under $5,000: it combines a manufacturer-rated 3,200 ANSI lumens, wide claimed color coverage, HDR10+ support, 4K/60 playback, gaming features, and a long-life LED light source. It is not a native-4K projector, however, and its black levels do not compete with premium LCoS or D-ILA models.

The right choice depends on the room, screen, installation position, and content. A dark theater rewards contrast and black-level performance; a living room needs usable brightness and a screen that controls reflected light. This guide uses U.S. pricing and separates strict under-$5,000 options from projectors that qualify only through a verified sale or dealer price.

First, understand what “4K projector” means

“4K” is used for several different technologies. A native-4K projector uses imaging devices with 3,840 × 2,160 or 4,096 × 2,160 pixels. JVC’s DLA-NZ500, for example, uses three native 4K D-ILA devices at 4,096 × 2,160, according to its official specification sheet.

Epson Home Cinema 2350 4K PRO-UHD Smart Streaming Projector with Android TV | 3-Chip 3LCD 2800 Lumens Color and White Brightness HDR10 HLG Low Latency 10 W Speaker Bluetooth Home Theater
  • 4K PRO-UHD (1) — An amazing 4K experience utilizing advanced processing for resolution enhancement, color and image processing; HDR10 (2) and HLG support produce an extraordinary range of color and detail in both bright and dark scenes
  • Bright Picture — 2,800 lumens of color and white brightness (6) deliver a bright, vivid picture in a variety of lighting conditions
  • True 3-Chip 3LCD technology — displays 100% of the RGB color signal for every frame, providing outstanding color accuracy while maintaining excellent color brightness, without any distracting “rainbowing” or “color brightness” issues seen with other projection technologies.
  • Input Lag Time Under 20 ms — Low latency mode allows for responsive gaming with the latest generation of gaming consoles
  • Smart Streaming Capability — Latest Android TV (3) interface with a simple-to-use remote – including voice search with built-in Google Assistant; watch all your favorite streaming channels including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, YouTube and more; even stream live TV with apps like YouTube TV (4)

Pixel-shifted or “4K-enhanced” projectors start with lower-resolution imaging chips and rapidly shift pixels to create a denser image. Epson describes the LS12000 as using 4K PRO-UHD Advanced Pixel-Shifting Technology. This can look highly detailed, particularly on a large screen, but it is not the same imaging architecture as native 4K.

Finally, some projectors merely accept a 4K signal. That means a 4K disc player, console, or streamer can connect to the projector, not that the projector creates a native 4K image. Resolution labels should therefore be read alongside the projector’s imaging method.

Why brightness alone does not determine picture quality

Brightness helps an image retain impact when the room is not completely dark. It does not guarantee good contrast, accurate color, sharp optics, or convincing HDR. A high-lumen projector can still produce gray-looking blacks, poor shadow detail, or a washed-out image when light reflects from white walls and ceilings.

Brightness figures also need their measurement standard. BenQ rates the HT4550i at 3,200 ANSI lumens. XGIMI rates the HORIZON Ultra at 2,300 ISO lumens and the HORIZON S Max at 3,100 ISO lumens. ANSI and ISO measurements should not be treated as interchangeable, and manufacturer maximum figures may be higher than brightness in accurate Cinema or HDR modes.

As practical guidance:

  • Under about 100 inches in a dark room: roughly 1,500–2,500 measured lumens may be sufficient.
  • At 100–130 inches or with moderate ambient light: approximately 2,500–3,500 measured lumens is generally more useful.
  • In direct daytime sunlight: no conventional projector will perform like a television. Consider a large TV or a UST projector paired with a suitable ambient-light-rejecting screen.

These are planning ranges, not laboratory rules. Screen gain, throw distance, picture mode, lamp or laser power, wall color, and room reflections can materially change the result. HDR also needs more light than SDR to show bright highlights without compressing the rest of the image.

Best overall under $5,000: BenQ HT4550i

Choose it for: bright home cinema, sports, movies, streaming, and casual or serious gaming where native 4K is not mandatory.

The BenQ HT4550i is the strongest strictly verified candidate in this group. Its published specification includes 3,200 ANSI lumens, a 4LED light source, claimed 100% DCI-P3 and Rec.709 coverage, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG support, Android TV, a 1.3× zoom, and a stated 30,000-hour LED life.

For gaming, BenQ states 4K/60 support, ALLM, and 17.9 ms input lag at 4K/60. Independent RTINGS testing describes it as a very good 4K HDR10+ projector with good contrast, excellent brightness, and a wide color gamut. RTINGS also notes that less expensive projectors can offer comparable value, so the BenQ’s advantage is its balance rather than a claim of absolute superiority in every measurement.

Its DLP design can look crisp and colorful, but single-chip DLP can produce red, green, or blue flashes known as rainbow artifacts for some viewers. Its black levels also fall short of premium JVC-style D-ILA performance. The projector has less installation flexibility than a large dedicated cinema model, so check the throw distance and lens-shift range before planning a mount.

Buy it if: you want one projector for movies, sports, HDR, and gaming, especially in a room with some controllable ambient light.

Skip it if: your priority is the deepest possible blacks in a fully dark theater, extensive motorized lens memories, or guaranteed native 4K.

Best traditional theater option if discounted: Epson Pro Cinema LS12000

Choose it for: a permanent theater installation, a large screen, strong placement flexibility, and gaming connectivity.

The Epson Pro Cinema LS12000 is not an unqualified under-$5,000 recommendation. Epson’s official U.S. MSRP is $5,999. It belongs here only when a current, legitimate U.S. dealer or sale price brings a new unit below $5,000. A refurbished, open-box, or gray-market price must be labeled separately and checked for warranty coverage.

When available at the right price, the LS12000 is compelling for installation work. Epson lists 2,700 lumens of both color and white brightness, laser illumination, HDR10+, 4K/120 support, and a dynamic contrast ratio exceeding 2,500,000:1. The quoted contrast figure is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee of the black level a viewer will see in every room or picture mode.

Its pixel-shifting 4K PRO-UHD system is not native 4K, but the projector’s brightness, laser consistency, processing, and placement flexibility can matter more than the label for many home theaters. It is a better fit than a compact living-room projector when the plan includes ceiling mounting, a large screen, or careful video calibration.

Buy it if: you find a verified sub-$5,000 price and need a flexible long-throw installation projector.

Skip it if: your limit is based strictly on MSRP or you specifically require native 4K.

Best living-room convenience: XGIMI HORIZON Ultra

Choose it for: apartments, rentals, casual movie nights, and buyers who value automated setup more than enthusiast-level installation controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

XGIMI lists the HORIZON Ultra at 2,300 ISO lumens with a hybrid LED-and-laser light source and support for HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision. XGIMI promotes automated screen adaptation, wall-color adjustment, and placement assistance. Its official comparison material showed a $1,179 promotional price against a $1,699.99 reference price; verify the current offer before publication or purchase.

Automatic screen fit and obstacle avoidance are useful when the projector moves between rooms, but they can shrink the image, add processing, or create scaling artifacts. They should not be confused with optical lens shift. For the cleanest image, place the projector square to the screen and use digital correction only when necessary.

Best bright multipurpose-room option: XGIMI HORIZON S Max

Choose it for: sports, television, games, and large casual viewing in a multipurpose room.

XGIMI lists the HORIZON S Max at 3,100 ISO lumens, with HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision, and IMAX Enhanced support. Its comparison page showed a $1,429 promotional price against a $1,899 reference price. The ISO rating should not be directly ranked against the BenQ’s ANSI rating.

The S Max makes the most sense when ease of use and high stated output are more important than a traditional cinema chassis with extensive optical adjustments. As with the HORIZON Ultra, automated correction is convenient but may reduce the usable image area or add processing. Independent measurements should be considered before treating the manufacturer’s brightness and picture-quality claims as equivalent to a tested theater projector.

Buy it if: you need a bright, simple projector for mixed household use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: you want a permanently mounted system whose image is optimized through lens shift, manual geometry, and professional calibration.

Best ultra-short-throw alternative: XGIMI AURA 2

Choose it for: a large image from a short distance when ceiling mounting a conventional projector is impractical.

The XGIMI AURA 2 is a laser ultra-short-throw projector rated at 2,300 ISO lumens, with HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision support. XGIMI’s supplied pricing showed $2,239 promotional pricing against a $2,699 reference price.

UST installation is not simply a matter of placing the projector near any wall. A small height or angle error becomes obvious across a large image, and wall imperfections can create uneven focus and geometry. A normal painted wall may show texture, hot spots, bright bands, or washed-out blacks. Budget for a screen specifically designed for UST projection, ideally one with an appropriate ambient-light-rejecting surface.

Best native-4K stretch pick: JVC DLA-NZ500

Choose it for: a dark, dedicated theater where native 4K and black-level performance matter more than brightness, gaming speed, or the strict budget.

The JVC DLA-NZ500 is not a strict under-$5,000 new-projector choice. JVC’s U.S. price is shown as $6,999.95. Consider it only as a stretch purchase or when an authorized dealer discount, refurbished unit, or used example is independently verified and clearly labeled.

Its three native 4K D-ILA devices, BLU-Escent laser source, 2,000-lumen rating, 1.6× motorized zoom, and substantial lens shift—up to ±70% vertically and ±28% horizontally in 16:9 mode—make it a serious installation projector. JVC’s specification sheet lists 40,000:1 native contrast. That architecture is especially attractive in a light-controlled room, where black-level depth is easier to see.

At 2,000 lumens, it is less suitable for direct ambient light or an extremely large screen. It is also a less obvious gaming choice than the BenQ because the buying decision is centered on cinematic image quality rather than low-latency versatility.

Buy it if: native 4K and dedicated-theater contrast justify exceeding the budget.

Skip it if: $5,000 is a firm ceiling or the projector will be used mainly in a bright living room.

Screen and room planning

Dark dedicated theater

Use a neutral white screen when the room is genuinely light-controlled. Dark walls and ceilings reduce reflections that lift black levels. A high-quality fixed-frame screen can preserve uniformity and sharpness better than a loosely tensioned or improvised surface.

Moderate ambient light

A gray or ambient-light-rejecting screen may improve perceived contrast, but it can narrow viewing angles, introduce texture or sparkle, or create hot spots. Match the screen to the projector’s throw direction and the seating layout rather than assuming every ALR material works with every projector.

UST installation

Use a UST-specific screen and follow the manufacturer’s geometry instructions. Include the screen in the total system budget; a projector-only comparison can make a UST system appear cheaper than it really is.

Large screens

Brightness falls as the image gets larger. Before choosing a 120- or 150-inch screen, check the projector’s throw range, expected picture mode, screen gain, and HDR requirements. A bright projector is not automatically sufficient for every large screen, especially after calibration or in Eco mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installation features that matter

Lens shift moves the image optically and normally preserves more resolution than digital keystone. Zoom gives the installer more freedom to position the projector for a chosen screen size. Motorized focus, zoom, and lens memories are valuable when a projector serves multiple aspect ratios or is mounted permanently.

Digital keystone, warping, automatic screen fit, and obstacle avoidance solve practical placement problems, but they can shrink the image, introduce scaling, reduce effective sharpness, and sometimes add input delay. For a construction or permanent-installation project, start with accurate projector placement and optical adjustment rather than relying on software correction.

Before ordering a mount, confirm the projector’s throw ratio, lens offset, weight, mounting pattern, ventilation clearance, cable route, and service access. Plan HDMI, power, audio, and control cabling before closing walls or ceilings. A projector can meet every picture specification and still be a poor installation if the lens cannot land on the screen from the available position.

Gaming and connectivity checklist

Do not label a projector “best for gaming” without stating the resolution and refresh rate behind the latency claim. Check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 4K/60 support and input lag at 4K/60.
  • 1080p/120 or 1080p/240 support.
  • 4K/120 input handling, if required.
  • ALLM and VRR support.
  • HDMI bandwidth and cable length.
  • Whether low-latency mode disables image enhancements.
  • eARC or optical audio compatibility.

The HT4550i is the clearest gaming choice in this group on the supplied evidence: BenQ quotes 17.9 ms at 4K/60 and supports ALLM, while RTINGS’ comparison lists 1080p/240 support. The HORIZON Ultra is listed in that comparison as limited to 4K/60. Console compatibility can still vary by title, signal mode, cable, and receiver, so test the complete signal chain.

Laser, LED, and lamp considerations

Laser and LED projectors are usually preferable in this price range because they start quickly, shut down without frequent lamp replacement, and generally maintain brightness more consistently than traditional lamps. BenQ lists a 30,000-hour LED life for the HT4550i, while XGIMI describes its models as using long-life solid-state illumination.

A light-source-life number is not a promise that the picture will remain unchanged for that many hours. It is an estimate under specified conditions. Brightness, color balance, optics, fans, electronics, and warranty support still matter. Laser systems can also be expensive to repair outside warranty, so buy through an authorized seller when possible.

Smart features: useful, but separate from image quality

The HT4550i includes Android TV. XGIMI emphasizes automated setup and smart entertainment features. These conveniences can make a projector easier for a family to use, but they should not be treated as evidence of better optics or HDR.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Streaming support can vary by country, app, firmware version, and licensing arrangement. An external Apple TV, Roku, Google TV device, game console, or disc player may provide a more durable interface. Confirm Netflix and other required apps specifically, and check whether the projector supports ARC or eARC for sending sound to an AV receiver or soundbar.

How to choose in five decisions

  1. Set the budget correctly. Decide whether $5,000 includes only the projector or also the screen, mount, audio, cabling, installation, and calibration.
  2. Measure the room. Record screen width, seating distance, ceiling height, mounting position, and available throw distance.
  3. Control the light. Curtains, dark surfaces, and a suitable screen may improve the result more than moving to a higher lumen rating.
  4. Choose the imaging priority. Select the BenQ for brightness and versatility, Epson for installation flexibility if discounted below budget, XGIMI for convenience, or JVC for native 4K and dark-room contrast beyond the limit.
  5. Verify the complete signal path. Check HDMI bandwidth, gaming refresh rate, audio return, streaming apps, warranty, and seller authorization before installation.

Bottom-line recommendations by buyer

  • Choose the BenQ HT4550i if brightness, color, gaming, and a strict new-projector budget are the priorities.
  • Choose the Epson LS12000 if a verified authorized-dealer or sale price falls below $5,000 and you want a flexible traditional theater installation.
  • Choose the XGIMI HORIZON Ultra if automated setup and Dolby Vision matter more than enthusiast-level theater performance.
  • Choose the XGIMI HORIZON S Max for a bright multipurpose room where convenience is central.
  • Choose the XGIMI AURA 2 when a UST layout solves the room’s installation problem and you can provide the correct screen.
  • Choose the JVC DLA-NZ500 only if native 4K and dark-room contrast justify exceeding the limit or buying verified discounted, refurbished, or used stock.
