Choosing a 400 CFM Range Hood for a Kitchen Remodel

A 400 CFM rating is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of equivalent installed performance. Compare availability, fit, duct requirements, sound at usable speeds, and filter needs; the Broan examples covered here are discontinued, not current recommendations.

A 400 CFM rating is a useful way to narrow a range-hood search, but it does not guarantee that two hoods will perform alike once installed. Choose by checking the specific model’s availability and specifications, fit over the cooking surface, duct requirements, noise at the speed you will use, and whether it can be ducted or recirculated.

The Broan examples in this guide illustrate what to compare, but both are discontinued according to their manufacturer pages. They are not current buying recommendations; verify any replacement’s specifications and availability before choosing it.

What 400 CFM tells you—and what it doesn’t

CFM means cubic feet per minute. A manufacturer’s 400 CFM rating is a model specification, not proof that the hood will deliver the same airflow in every kitchen. Hauslane notes that results can vary with kitchen setup, venting, windows, and testing environment. Compare model-specific ratings and installation requirements rather than treating the CFM number as a complete performance measure.

For a useful comparison, look for the conditions behind the airflow figure where the manufacturer provides them. Also compare sound at the same operating speed and under stated conditions. Do not treat one manufacturer’s normal-speed sound claim as an independent comparison with another model’s maximum-speed figure.

Documented 400 CFM examples

The manufacturer specifications below are examples of details to verify—not a ranking or endorsement. Both models are marked discontinued on their Broan product pages. The research available for this guide does not establish current stock, prices, or equivalent specifications for replacement models.

Model Documented specifications Availability and cautions
Broan Antero CLDH130SS 30-inch width; 400 CFM; 7-inch round outlet; horizontal or vertical duct direction; convertible for ductless use; 0.4 sones listed Broan marks it discontinued. Charcoal filter for non-ducted use is sold separately. Broan describes normal-speed operation as below 1.0 sones; that claim is not a maximum-speed comparison.
Broan Alta BQLA130WH 30-inch width; 400 CFM; hybrid baffle filters; three speeds; normal-speed sound listed below 0.5 sones Broan marks it discontinued and suggests CRDE130SS as a replacement. The available evidence does not confirm that the suggested model preserves the Alta’s airflow, sound, dimensions, or features.

Specifications in this table come from the respective Broan Antero product page and Broan Alta product page. Manufacturer specifications and claims should not be read as independent comparative testing.

How to choose a model for your remodel

  1. Confirm that the model is available. Check the manufacturer’s current product page and verify whether a proposed replacement is actually designated for the discontinued model. Compare its specifications rather than assuming they are equivalent.
  2. Check width and cabinet fit. Hauslane advises choosing a hood at least as wide as the cooking range. Confirm the cabinet opening and the selected model’s dimensions before purchase.
  3. Plan the duct route against the installation manual. Check the specified duct diameter and direction, mounting height, electrical requirements, and route. Hauslane advises against using less than a 6-inch duct for its hoods because it can reduce performance; that is Hauslane guidance, not a universal rule. Follow the selected model’s manual and local requirements.
  4. Compare sound at usable speeds. Check the speed and conditions attached to each sound rating. A normal-speed rating does not tell you how loud the hood is at maximum speed.
  5. Decide between ducted and recirculating operation. Confirm which configuration the model supports and what filters it needs. A recirculating hood filters air and returns it to the kitchen; it does not exhaust air outdoors.
  6. Check upkeep and parts. Verify whether charcoal filters are included or sold separately, which replacement part fits, and what replacement interval the manufacturer recommends.

Ducted or recirculating?

A ducted hood sends exhaust outdoors through its duct. A recirculating, or ductless, configuration returns filtered air to the kitchen instead. The Broan CLDH130SS is documented as convertible, but its charcoal filter for non-ducted use is sold separately. Check the exact model’s instructions and compatible filter before buying.

Recirculation shifts upkeep to filters. Broan identifies a separate charcoal filter for the CLDH130SS, while Hauslane advises periodic replacement of its ductless charcoal filters. The interval and compatible part depend on the model; use its manufacturer guidance rather than assuming one schedule fits all hoods.

Using and maintaining the hood

Zephyr advises turning a hood on at low speed at least five minutes before cooking, increasing speed as fumes rise, and running it for five to ten minutes afterward or using delay-off. This is Zephyr’s usage guidance, not a universal standard.

For any hood, follow its manual for operation and cleaning. Keep grease filters clean, and replace ductless charcoal filters according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Confirm replacement-filter availability before committing to a model.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 400 CFM mean on a range hood?

It is the manufacturer’s airflow rating in cubic feet per minute. It does not by itself establish installed performance; kitchen setup, venting, windows, and testing conditions can affect results.

How do I pick the correct hood size?

Start by matching hood width to the cooking range and confirming that the hood fits the cabinet opening. Hauslane advises that its hood should be at least as wide as the range. Check the selected model’s dimensions and installation manual.

Can I use a smaller duct than the manufacturer specifies?

Check the exact model’s installation manual. Hauslane says a duct smaller than 6 inches can reduce performance for its hoods, but that guidance is not a universal requirement for every brand or model.

Are the Broan Antero and Alta 400 CFM models still available?

Broan’s product pages mark the CLDH130SS Antero and BQLA130WH Alta as discontinued. Broan suggests CRDE130SS as a replacement for the Alta, but the evidence in this guide does not establish that it matches the Alta’s specifications. Verify current availability and specifications with the manufacturer.

What should I check when comparing hood noise?

Compare ratings for the same operating speed and note the stated conditions and units. A manufacturer’s normal-speed claim is not a measure of maximum-speed noise or an independent comparison against another brand.

Does a ductless hood exhaust air outside?

No. A recirculating hood filters air and returns it to the kitchen. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the required charcoal filter and its replacement guidance.
