Start with a small garden that fits your space and the time you can give it. Choose an in-ground bed, raised bed, or containers based on your site, soil, access, and upkeep preferences; check sunlight and water access before buying supplies; then choose crops and planting dates suited to your local conditions.

How do I start a garden?

Spend a little time observing the place you might grow before preparing a bed or buying plants. Sunlight, drainage, nearby trees, and access to water can determine which crops will thrive and how much work the garden needs.

  • Track sunlight. Notice how much direct sun the space receives at different times of day. Illinois Extension says most fruiting vegetables need six to eight hours of sunlight for best growth, while leafy crops such as lettuce and spinach can grow with less. Read Illinois Extension’s guidance on vegetable sunlight needs.
  • Check drainage. Observe what happens after rain or watering. Persistent puddles or very slow drainage may make the spot unsuitable without changes.
  • Look for competition. Nearby trees and shrubs can cast shade and compete for water and nutrients. Consider their roots as well as their canopies.
  • Plan water access. A site is easier to maintain if you can bring water to it conveniently, especially during dry weather.
  • Assess the soil. Where you plan to garden in the ground, consider a soil test rather than guessing at nutrient needs.

Keep the first plot deliberately modest. University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator Gemini Bhalsod put it this way: “It is always okay to start small, with maybe one or two raised beds or containers, if you are new to gardening.” The advice appeared in an Illinois Extension article published in 2019. After a season, you will have a better sense of what you enjoy growing and how much care you can manage.

Which garden format fits my space?

There is no universally best format. Compare the options against your available room, soil conditions, budget, accessibility needs, crop choices, and willingness to water and maintain the garden.

Format Works well when Consider before choosing
In-ground bed You have yard space and can prepare the existing soil. Soil quality, drainage, weeds, shade, and nearby tree roots affect how well it will work.
Raised bed You want to garden above existing soil or make the bed easier to reach. Building and filling it add cost, and raised soil can dry faster than in-ground beds. Tall or spreading plants may take up too much room in a small bed. Illinois Extension discusses raised-bed considerations.
Containers Your growing space is a balcony, patio, porch, or another small area. Choose enough root space, ensure drainage, use suitable potting mix, and expect to water more often because containers dry faster. Move them as needed to meet plants’ light requirements. See Illinois Extension’s vegetable container guidance.

Can I grow vegetables in containers?

Yes. Containers can make vegetables possible where there is no yard bed, provided each plant has enough room for its roots, the container drains, and the location supplies suitable light. Use potting mix appropriate for containers rather than treating a pot as a miniature patch of ground.

  • Check that water can drain freely from the container.
  • Choose a container large enough for the crop’s root and mature plant size.
  • Place it where the crop gets the light it needs; movable pots offer some flexibility.
  • Check moisture regularly. Container growing media dry out faster than in-ground soil, so watering may be more frequent.

A compact grouping of containers with herbs and leafy greens is one way to use a patio or balcony. Follow seed packets and plant labels for crop-specific spacing and growing directions.

What tools do I need to start gardening?

For a small garden, a hand trowel, a watering can or accessible hose, and plant labels may be enough to begin. Add tools when a particular job or larger garden calls for them; there is no need to buy a full collection of gadgets up front.

Tool or supply What it helps with
Hand trowel Transplanting and other small jobs.
Hoe Weeding and covering seeds.
Rake Preparing a seedbed.
Spade Digging and incorporating amendments.
Labels, string, and ruler Identifying plants and organizing or measuring spacing.
Watering can Watering seeds and transplants; a hose or irrigation system may be more practical for a larger garden.

These are general tool functions identified in Illinois Extension’s vegetable gardening tool guide. Choose only what suits the size and type of garden you are preparing.

How should I prepare the soil?

The right preparation depends on the site and how much existing vegetation needs to be removed. Illinois Extension describes several approaches, including tilling, smothering, herbicide, cover cropping, or combinations of these methods. Choose an approach that suits your garden rather than assuming one method fits every yard.

Tilling can loosen compacted soil and incorporate organic matter, but repeated or excessive tilling can damage soil structure and accelerate moisture loss. Illinois Extension explains these trade-offs and other soil-preparation options.

What are some creative ideas for a small garden?

Make the garden useful and inviting without adding more work than you can sustain. Match each idea to the space and crops you want to grow.

  • Balcony herb-and-greens group: Arrange containers according to their light needs, and keep water within easy reach.
  • Compact raised bed: Grow a few crops that fit its footprint rather than crowding in tall or spreading plants.
  • Vertical support: Give suitable climbing crops a support to grow upward, saving ground area.
  • Mixed edible bed: Combine vegetables and herbs with flowers along an edge for a varied, attractive planting.

If you want to support pollinators, think beyond flowers: food, water, shelter, and other habitat needs all matter. Illinois Extension identifies dill, parsley, carrot, and thyme as herbs that can provide habitat when grown and allowed to flower. A planting can contribute habitat, but a few flowers alone do not guarantee improved crop yields. See Illinois Extension’s guidance on herbs and pollinator habitat.
