A leaning tree may be growing naturally toward light, bending under snow or ice, or shifting because wind or another event has disturbed its roots. A longstanding curve is not necessarily a problem; a new lean, especially with lifted soil, damaged roots, or a broken trunk, can signal instability. Keep clear of a tree that may fall, and have a qualified arborist assess large, storm-damaged, or hazardous trees.
What kind of lean does the tree have?
The shape and timing of the lean can help distinguish ordinary growth from a possible stability problem. Penn State Extension describes three patterns: bows, straight leans, and sweeps.
- Sweep: A gradual curve that begins near the ground and bends upward can develop as a tree grows toward sunlight. A sweep may be structurally sound.
- Bow: An arched stem may have bent under the weight of snow or ice.
- Straight lean: A lean that begins at the ground and appeared suddenly can follow a discrete event, such as wind shifting the tree. It warrants attention to the roots and surrounding soil.
These patterns are clues, not a diagnosis. A tree’s species, condition, and site all matter. See Penn State Extension’s guide to leaning trees.
When is a leaning tree dangerous?
A lean is more concerning if it is new or followed a storm, or if the tree has a broken trunk, damaged roots, or soil pushed up near its base. Heaved soil behind the lean or a lifted root plate can indicate root or soil failure, which makes re-anchoring difficult.

Do not approach a tree that may be unstable, particularly if it could hit a person, building, road, or other target. Storm-damaged trees and limbs can move unpredictably. Do not pull, cut, brace, or climb a potentially hazardous tree yourself; ask a qualified arborist to assess it. Penn State Extension provides storm-recovery safety guidance.
Never work near utility lines, even if a line appears inactive. If a tree or branch is affecting a line, contact the utility company rather than trying to handle it.

What to check—and what not to disturb
- Keep clear first. If the tree shifted in a storm, is large or unstable, has a broken trunk or hanging limbs, or stands near something it could strike, leave the assessment to an arborist.
- Establish when the lean began. Note whether it is longstanding and gradual or recent and sudden. Do not assume that a gradual sweep needs correction.
- Look for visible warning signs only from a safe place. Check for trunk breakage and soil lifted near the roots. Do not dig around roots or disturb a shifted tree to investigate.
- Choose the response based on condition and exposure. Observe a gradual, apparently sound sweep; consider temporary support only for a suitable small, intact tree; and get professional help for root or soil failure, storm damage, or possible danger to people or property.
Can you straighten and stake a leaning tree?
Sometimes, but only in a limited situation. Penn State Extension describes possible righting for a small tree when the trunk is unbroken, roots are sound, and the stress that caused the lean is unlikely to happen again. Its example is a tree roughly ten feet tall; that is an example, not a universal safe-height limit. Whether righting is appropriate depends on the tree and site, and a large tree with failed roots or a lifted root plate may not be practical to re-anchor.
Staking is not a remedy for a failed root system. Most newly planted trees do better without stakes. If a small, intact tree genuinely needs temporary support, ties should allow some movement and must not constrict the trunk. Penn State Extension explains temporary support and the risks of rigid staking; the University of Minnesota Extension advises removing stakes and ties after establishment, usually after one year, in its guidance on planting and transplanting trees. Site conditions vary, so these sources do not establish one staking design for every tree.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to correct every lean: A gradual sweep toward light may be sound.
- Pulling a large tree upright: If roots or soil have failed, re-anchoring can be difficult.
- Leaving rigid or tight ties in place: They can restrict development or girdle the trunk.
- Handling storm damage as a routine yard task: Unbalanced trees and limbs can move unpredictably.
- Working near power lines: Contact the utility company about a tree or branch affecting a line.
This is general guidance, not a diagnosis of a particular tree. Significant leaning can indicate a hazard or root problem; the International Society of Arboriculture discusses inspection in its guidance on pruning bare trees.
