B.C.’s general local elections are on October 17, 2026, and construction leaders say the results can affect permit timelines, project costs, housing and infrastructure. The provincial election is a separate event, scheduled for October 24.

Why local elections matter to construction

“Why vote in a municipal election? Aren’t federal and provincial elections more important?” The answer for construction workers and businesses is that local governments make decisions with direct consequences for whether projects proceed, what they cost and when work can begin.

Vancouver developer and retired architect Michael Geller said, “Municipal elections are important because the municipal level of government is the one that is closest to the people.” Retired Vancouver and Metro Vancouver planner Christina DeMarco added: “They also make most of the decisions on what gets built and where, through local land use plans and development approval processes.”

Those decisions include land use and development approvals, permitting, local fees, and infrastructure investment. They can shape housing delivery and construction schedules, as well as the feasibility of individual projects. The B.C. government describes general local elections as a direct way for the public to influence local government, school districts and other local governance bodies.

What is on the ballot on October 17?

Elections BC identifies October 17, 2026, as general local election day. The election reaches beyond city and municipal councils. Depending on the community, voters may elect:

  • Mayors and municipal councillors
  • Regional district directors
  • School-board trustees
  • Specified parks-board members
  • Local community commission members
  • Representatives to the Islands Trust

Local governments run their own elections, including voting, counting, reporting results and accepting candidate nominations. Elections BC administers campaign-financing and election-advertising rules under the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act.

ConstructConnect / Journal of Commerce reported 189 local government bodies. Elections BC’s official election information confirms the date and scope of the election; that page does not corroborate the reported count.

How construction priorities differ across B.C.

The industry voices quoted in the October 13, 2026, ConstructConnect / Journal of Commerce article describe regional concerns, not a single province-wide platform.

Metro Vancouver: faster, more predictable approvals

Jeannine Martin, president of the Vancouver Regional Construction Association, emphasized how council decisions affect project delivery: “A decision at the council table can affect the cost of your next project, when your crew gets to work and whether a project goes ahead at all.”

She said predictability matters alongside speed: “Construction companies need to know what the requirements are, what fees they will face and how long approvals will take.” The article also points to Surrey’s efforts to shorten permit-processing times and Vancouver’s work to improve.

Northern B.C.: responsible development and collaboration

Jaime Sims, membership development co-ordinator of the Northern Regional Construction Association, said municipal leadership should “focus on creating an environment where responsible development can move forward efficiently while maintaining the quality of life residents value.” That frames the challenge as balancing efficient project delivery with residents’ expectations for community life.

Vancouver Island: fair access to public projects

Rory Kulmala, CEO of the Vancouver Island Construction Association, connected municipal capital investment with opportunities for local firms and workers: “We need to invest locally. When municipalities invest in infrastructure and capital projects, we want Island businesses, contractors, trades and workers to have a fair opportunity to participate.”

Southern Interior: infrastructure, housing and development charges

Clifford Kshyk, CEO of the Southern Interior Construction Association, said: “Not only is infrastructure and housing crucial for the growth of our communities, but they also support many jobs.” He estimated that development charges can account for “as much as 30 per cent of the cost of a new home.” That is Kshyk’s quoted estimate about his region, as reported by ConstructConnect / Journal of Commerce in 2026; it is not an independently verified or province-wide rate.

Questions to consider when assessing local candidates

There is no candidate comparison in the reported article, and local conditions vary. Construction voters can use its issues to assess candidates’ proposals and records without treating any one priority as universal:

  • Permits: Do candidates address processing time and predictability, and explain how they would make requirements and approval timelines clearer?
  • Fees: What do they propose for development charges and other fees, and how do they connect those choices to housing costs and project feasibility?
  • Infrastructure: What capital investment do they support, and how would projects address community needs and construction employment?
  • Housing and land use: How do their plans handle housing construction, local land-use decisions and development approvals?
  • Public work: How would they provide local businesses, contractors, trades and workers a fair opportunity to participate in public projects?
  • Collaboration: How would they work with Indigenous communities, residents and industry while enabling responsible development?

Jordan Bateman, vice-president of advocacy at the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association, urged industry members to participate in both election dates: “Put it in your plans to vote on the 17th and the 24th for the candidates who support construction and prosperity.”

Keep the two October election dates separate

The general local election is October 17, 2026. The B.C. provincial general election is scheduled for October 24, 2026—one week later. They are separate elections with different candidates and responsibilities. Local election administration rests with local governments, while Elections BC administers campaign-financing and election-advertising rules for local elections.
