Automist is a specialist-designed residential watermist suppression system, not a standalone smoke alarm or a do-it-yourself appliance. A ceiling smoke sensor starts a scan, thermal sensing identifies the fire, and a wall-mounted spray head uses pressurised mains water to direct mist at the heat source. The system must be designed for the building, installed by a suitably trained professional, accepted by the relevant building-control authority and serviced annually.
Its value depends on the exact model, tested room conditions, water supply, installation quality and local rules. Keep ordinary audible smoke alarms in the property, and leave immediately if a fire occurs.

What Automist fire protection is
Automist is a targeted watermist system for homes. Instead of covering a ceiling with permanently exposed sprinkler heads, it combines smoke detection, thermal scanning, a controller, a pump and wall-mounted spray heads. The spray-head hoses remain dry until the system operates, according to the manufacturer’s US FAQ.
That architecture makes Automist a designed fire-suppression installation rather than a consumer device that can be mounted wherever convenient. The designer has to establish which rooms are protected, where sensors and heads can see the likely fire area, how the pump will obtain water, and which fire-performance tests apply to the proposed room and building.

Automist suppresses or controls a fire; it does not replace the warning function of domestic smoke alarms. The Automist User Guide states: “The sensor is designed to activate the Automist system. Other alarms should be installed in your property.”
How the detection-and-targeting sequence works
The system’s operation has several distinct stages. Understanding them helps explain both its capabilities and its limits.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 111. Smoke detection starts the scan
A ceiling-mounted smoke sensor detects smoke and signals the controller. The sensor’s job is to activate the Automist process, not to serve as the property’s general audible alarm. The user guide describes the sensor as triggering a scan of the relevant area.
2. Thermal sensing looks for the heat source
Once scanning begins, thermal sensors examine the room for a heat signature. The system assesses the available view from its spray heads and selects the head that has the most useful line of sight to the fire. This is different from a conventional sprinkler, where an individual heat-operated head generally discharges in place.
3. The controller selects a spray head
The controller coordinates the scan and targeting decision. A wall-mounted head is chosen when its view and position are judged most useful for the detected heat source. The exact arrangement depends on the approved design, room geometry and the model installed.
4. The pump pressurises the water
The pump is typically connected to the property’s mains water supply. After a fire is identified, it pressurises the water and sends it through the selected high-pressure hose to the spray head. Because the hose is normally dry, water is not sitting in the head assembly before activation.
5. Mist is directed at the fire
The operating head projects a fine watermist at the heat source. The US Automist FAQ gives approximately 2.37 US gallons per minute from the operating spray head. That figure is explicitly a US-system figure and should not be applied automatically to every model, installation or country.
6. The system continues to monitor movement
Automist continues monitoring the heat signature during operation. If the fire moves, the selected head may reposition to keep the spray directed toward the useful target. The ability to scan and retarget is a system feature; it is not a promise that every fire in every room will be controlled under every circumstance.

What equipment an installation includes
| Component | Function | Design considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Ceiling smoke sensor | Detects smoke and initiates the Automist scan. | It is not the property’s replacement for ordinary audible smoke alarms. |
| Controller | Coordinates detection, scanning, head selection and operation. | Its location and connections are part of the approved installation. |
| Pump | Pressurises mains water when the system identifies a fire. | Water supply, electrical provision and access for service must be planned. |
| Wall-mounted spray heads | Deliver targeted high-pressure mist toward the heat source. | Heads need a clear view and must not be painted over or obstructed. |
| High-pressure hoses | Carry water from the pump to the selected head. | They remain dry until operation, according to the manufacturer’s description. |
Automist is not an ordinary smoke alarm
A domestic smoke alarm warns occupants with an audible alert. Automist’s sensor activates suppression equipment. Those functions are complementary, so a property should have compliant smoke alarms in addition to Automist.
Will the sensor alarm sound if there is a fire?
Do not assume that the Automist sensor provides the same occupant-warning service as an independently installed smoke alarm. Follow the user guide for the installed system and fit the separate smoke alarms required for the dwelling and local regulations.

Testing and maintenance instructions depend on the installed model and its current manual. Arrange the checks specified by the installer and the manufacturer. A test of the Automist sensor does not remove the need to test the property’s ordinary smoke alarms under their own instructions.
Why design evidence and building context matter
Watermist performance is not established by a generic demonstration alone. Welsh Government guidance describes BS 8458:2015 as the principal British Standard for domestic and residential watermist systems. It covers design, installation, water supplies, commissioning, maintenance and fire-performance testing.
The same guidance explains that systems are bespoke and that successful, relevant fire-performance tests are critical to determining a design. A test must relate to the proposed system dimensions, room conditions and application. A video of mist putting out a fire, without matching test evidence, is not sufficient technical support for a building-control submission.
Room size, ceiling height and configuration
Limits must be attached to the specific assessed configuration. A 2023 Scottish ministerial view discussing an Automist Smartscan Hydra submission describes a maximum room area of 80 m² and a maximum ceiling height of 3.5 m for that assessed scope. Those figures are not a universal allowance for every Automist model, room or jurisdiction.
Recommended Free Tools
Open-plan layouts, unusual ceiling shapes, concealed voids, changes of use and rooms outside the tested arrangement can all affect whether a proposed design is acceptable. The designer should identify the relevant test evidence rather than extending a dimension or performance claim by analogy.
UK standards and approval: what is and is not established
BS 8458:2015
BS 8458:2015 is the key British Standard cited for domestic and residential watermist systems. It addresses the whole lifecycle: design, installation, water supply, commissioning, maintenance and fire-performance testing. Compliance depends on the system and design meeting the applicable provisions and having relevant supporting tests.

Manufacturer compliance statements
Plumis’s 2023 compliance guidance says Automist Smartscan conforms to BS 8458:2015 and cites BSI Verification Certificate VC 712581. That is a manufacturer-issued compliance statement. For a live project, request the current certificate, model scope and installation documents rather than relying on an old brochure or a different product variant.
Scottish building-control decisions
Scottish Government guidance says the applicant and verifier should satisfy themselves that an alternative suppression system is designed, tested and approved for domestic or residential buildings and is fit for purpose. The 2023 ministerial view concerns a specific Automist Smartscan Hydra submission, its supplied evidence and its stated scope. It is not blanket approval for every Automist model, building type or UK nation.

Building-control acceptance remains project-specific. The applicable authority may require drawings, hydraulic information, test evidence, commissioning records and details of the maintenance regime before accepting an alternative suppression arrangement.
United States information and UK information must not be mixed
The manufacturer’s US FAQ says the complete residential system was independently evaluated under UL 2167A, described there as a program for targeted watermist systems in one- and two-family dwellings. Treat that as an Automist statement and verify the current listing and model documents before making a certification claim for a particular US project.
The approximately 2.37-gallons-per-minute figure is also from the US FAQ. UK design decisions should use the data and certification applicable to the UK system being proposed. UK references to BS 8458:2015, Scottish building-control guidance and a BSI verification certificate do not automatically establish US compliance, and a US evaluation does not automatically satisfy UK approval requirements.
Performance claims need their full qualification
Plumis’s 2023 compliance guidance reports that Automist can activate 2.0 to 13.7 times faster than a concealed sprinkler, summarising cited fire-engineering research. This is a manufacturer-reported range with a specific comparison context; it is not an independently verified universal result for every room, sprinkler type or installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSome installer marketing also describes large water savings. A fair comparison requires matching fire tests, discharge duration, system scope, room geometry and the outcome being measured. Do not turn a marketing percentage into a general claim about all Automist installations or all conventional sprinklers.
No neutral population-wide statistic establishes a particular reduction in fire deaths, property loss, adoption or insurance cost. Insurer treatment and premiums must be checked directly with the relevant insurer.

Planning and installation workflow
A specialist installer should coordinate the work with the project’s designer and building-control team. A typical workflow described by an authorized installer includes the following stages:
- Confirm suitability. Review the dwelling, occupancy, rooms, escape strategy, water and electrical supplies, and the authority that will approve the work.
- Survey and plan. Map room geometry, ceiling heights, likely fire locations, head views, sensor positions, pipe or hose routes and pump access.
- Prepare the technical submission. Assemble drawings, design calculations or technical information, relevant fire-performance tests, product documentation and the proposed commissioning and maintenance arrangements.
- Obtain building-control agreement. Submit the design to the applicable verifier or authority before closing up work that would make inspection difficult. Acceptance is not automatic.
- Install the system. Fit the controller, pump, water connection, sensor and spray heads in accordance with the approved design and current installation manual.
- Commission and document. The installer should complete functional checks and provide commissioning documentation, user instructions and records for future servicing.
- Handover and maintain. Record the installer’s contact details, service interval, model and design scope. Tell future occupants what the system does and what they must do after activation.
Availability and installer authorization can change. Verify current authorization with Plumis or the proposed installer before signing a contract, and obtain a project-specific quote rather than relying on historic online figures.
Owner safety, activation and maintenance
If there is a fire
The Automist User Guide says: “In the event of a fire, leave the building immediately and contact the fire department.” Do not stay to watch the mist, search for the activation point or attempt to fight the fire yourself. Follow the household escape plan and call the emergency service from a safe location.
If Automist activates
After the incident, contact the installer. The guide instructs owners to have the system recommissioned after activation. A system that has operated, even briefly, should not simply be reset and treated as ready without the required inspection.
What owners must not do
- Do not modify, dismantle or repair the system yourself.
- Do not paint over spray heads or cover them with fittings, storage or decorations.
- Do not block the heads’ view or change room layouts in a way that could obstruct targeting.
- Do not isolate the water or electrical supply without understanding the effect on protection and informing the responsible professional.
- Do not substitute a different head, sensor or control part without installer approval.
Annual servicing
The official guide requires annual servicing by a specially trained authorised installer. Service should follow the current design, installation and operation manual for the installed model, not a generic checklist. Keep service and recommissioning records with the building’s fire-safety documents.
Automist compared with conventional sprinklers
The right comparison is a design review, not a slogan. Use the following questions when evaluating Automist against sprinklers or another suppression system:

The available material does not establish a neutral installed-price comparison or a whole-market performance ranking. A contractor should price the complete project, not just the visible heads or pump.
Questions to ask an installer before work starts
- Which exact Automist model and configuration is proposed?
- Which fire-performance tests support this room layout, area and ceiling height?
- What water pressure, flow, electrical supply and backup arrangements are required?
- Where will the pump, controller, sensor and heads be located, and how will they remain accessible?
- What documents will be submitted to building control, and who is responsible for obtaining acceptance?
- What happens after an activation, fault indication or loss of water or power?
- Who will provide the annual service, and what is included in the written maintenance price?
- What commissioning certificate, user guide, drawings and service records will be handed over?
- Is the installer currently authorised for the proposed system, and how can that status be verified?
Bottom line for a residential project
Automist can provide targeted watermist suppression where its detection, thermal targeting and discharge arrangement are supported by relevant tests and accepted for the particular building. It should be specified as a complete engineered system: sensor, controller, pump, water supply, heads, design evidence, commissioning and annual service.
Keep separate smoke alarms for occupant warning, follow the escape instruction to leave immediately, and use qualified authorised installers for design, installation, repair and recommissioning. For UK work, address BS 8458:2015 and the local building-control decision; for US work, verify the current UL 2167A listing and model scope. The installation is suitable only when that project-specific chain of evidence is complete.
