Neither is right for every house. Compare roof-specific bids, product warranties, climate and the time you expect to stay in the home before choosing.
How do asphalt and metal roofing compare?
| Factor | Asphalt shingles | Metal roofing |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Usually the lower initial-cost option. The Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA) gives no single national price in its FAQ. | MRA estimates metal may cost roughly two to three times as much as asphalt. This is a broad trade-association estimate, not a current local quote. |
| Expected service life | MRA estimates an average of 12 to 20 years. | MRA estimates 30 to 50-plus years. |
| Cool-roof choices | Cool asphalt shingles are available; the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says they cost about the same as conventional asphalt shingles. | Metal products for steep-slope roofs can also be designed as cool roofs. |
| Contractor availability and repairs | The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) says asphalt is readily available and contractors are easier to source. This is an industry perspective, not an independent comparative study. | ARMA says metal repairs can be more complex. Metal installation and repair needs vary by system and roof. |
The cost and service-life figures are estimates from MRA, a metal-roofing trade association, and are not guarantees or a neutral national comparison. Actual prices and performance depend on the materials, installation and home. See MRA’s homeowner FAQ.
What should you compare in roofing estimates?
A generic price per square foot can hide differences in roof shape, pitch, access and complexity. Hips, valleys and other details can affect labor and materials. MRA says a contractor needs to see the roof in person to estimate it accurately, and recommends working with a professional experienced in the selected metal style.

- The exact product, profile, finish and installation method
- Material and workmanship warranties, exclusions, finish coverage, transferability and installer responsibilities
Then compare the full installed price—not just the headline material price. Roof shape and pitch affect the estimate; no broad industry estimate can replace a site-specific bid. MRA’s FAQ describes these estimating factors.
How long do asphalt shingles last compared with a metal roof?
MRA gives broad estimates of 12 to 20 years for asphalt and 30 to 50-plus years for metal. These are association estimates, not promised lifespans. Actual service life depends on factors such as climate, roof pitch, material quality and installation.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
A warranty is not the same as a service-life guarantee. Read the written terms for each product, including what is covered, exclusions, finish protection and who is responsible for installation-related issues. Also consider how long you expect to own the home: a roof that may last beyond your planned time there does not automatically justify a higher initial price. Financing costs, maintenance and the possibility of selling before the roof reaches the end of its service life all affect the value to you. MRA’s FAQ provides its lifespan estimates and cautions that project conditions matter.
Will metal or asphalt lower your energy bill?
Material alone does not determine energy performance. DOE explains that a cool roof reflects more sunlight and emits absorbed heat more effectively. Solar reflectance and thermal emittance are distinct properties, and both affect a roof’s surface temperature. Look up the performance data for the exact product and finish rather than assuming that every metal roof, light-colored roof or “cool” product performs alike. DOE’s Consumer Guide to Cool Roofs explains the principles and product options.

DOE’s 2021 consumer guide says, “Installing a cool color roof on a home can shave at least 5 to 20% from the cooling costs of your energy bill.” DOE also says savings vary and tend to be greatest in hot and warm climates. Treat that range as broad guide language, not a forecast for your home: climate, insulation, attic ventilation, existing roof and heating and cooling systems all matter. Reflective roofing can also increase winter heating energy by reflecting sunlight that might otherwise help warm the building, and shingle reflectance may decline with age. DOE’s guide discusses these qualifications.
Both categories have cool-roof options: DOE lists cool asphalt shingles and metal products for steep-slope roofs, and says cool asphalt shingles cost about the same as conventional asphalt shingles. If an existing roof is mechanically sound, DOE cautions that “It is rarely economical to replace a mechanically sound roof just to increase its solar reflectance.” DOE’s guide also explains why savings depend on climate and building characteristics.

Which material fits your roof and contractor options?
Asphalt shingles
ARMA describes asphalt shingles as readily available and easier to find contractors for. They come in a range of colors and styles. For a cool-roof project, consider ventilation and insulation as well as the shingle itself. ARMA “highly discourages the uses of a field-applied coating over an asphalt shingle roof,” so coating an existing shingle roof should not be treated as a routine do-it-yourself energy upgrade. ARMA’s Residential Cool Roofing guidance covers those recommendations.
Metal roofing
Metal includes standing-seam or vertical panels, metal shingles and other profiles, in materials such as steel, aluminum, copper and zinc. The right installation approach depends on the specific system and roof geometry; ask whether the contractor has experience with the exact style you are considering. Metal styles can provide a different appearance or mimic other roof forms. MRA’s homeowner FAQ discusses metal styles and installer experience.

ARMA says metal repairs can be more complex than asphalt repairs, an industry perspective rather than a neutral head-to-head finding. When comparing bids, ask how the proposed system would be inspected and repaired, what repairs might require a specialist, and whether the contractor will handle warranty claims. ARMA’s comparison presents its perspective on availability and repairs.
How to choose for your home
- Favor asphalt shingles if keeping the initial price lower and finding a widely available roofing option are priorities, and the product and warranty meet your needs.
- Consider metal if you value its styles and finishes and are prepared for a higher upfront estimate in exchange for MRA’s longer stated service-life range.
- For either material, assess the exact product’s reflectance and emittance, your climate and whole-house energy conditions rather than assuming the material alone will reduce bills.
Get roof-specific written estimates for both options from qualified installers. Compare equivalent scopes, exact products, warranty terms and contractor experience before deciding; generic cost and longevity ranges cannot tell you which bid is best for your home.
